February 6, 2016 - My twin sister @DavisLSherry (left) and I during our first visit to the memorial site of The Three Stars in Clear Lake, Iowa. The horizon vanished with the blowing snow and earth and sky were tethered only by the stark blackness of horn-rimmed iconography and visible hints of fence line as we began our quarter-mile trek to where the plane came to rest. ----------- "Snow was snowing, wind was blowing, when the world said 'Goodbye, Buddy.'" -Mike Berry, Tribute to Buddy Holly (1961) -------

Probably the only velvet painting in our house that we gave a name to: Running Bear and Little White Dove after the song wrote by the Big Bopper, 'Running Bear' and made famous by Johnny Preston. #runningbear #velvetpainting #bigbopper #warriorshield #slawskytribe #johnnypreston #warshield

ONE OF THE FIRST THREE 45s MY MOM EVER BOUGHT FOR ME!

January 15, 1972 - Don McLean's 'American Pie' started a four week run at No.1 in the US singles chart. The song is a recounting of "The Day the Music Died" (a term taken from the song) — the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.) — and the aftermath.

Don McLean wrote the song in Cold Spring, New York and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The song made its debut in Philadelphia at Temple University when he was opening for Laura Nyro on March 14, 1971. The song is well known for its cryptic lyrics that have long been the subject of curiosity and speculation. Although McLean dedicated the American Pie album to Buddy Holly, none of the musicians in the plane crash are identified by name in the song itself.

When asked what "American Pie" meant, McLean replied, "It means I don't ever have to work again if I don't want to." Later, he more seriously stated, "You will find many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me.... Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence." McLean has generally avoided responding to direct questions about the song lyrics, such as saying, "They're beyond analysis. They're poetry." except to acknowledge that he did first learn about Buddy Holly's death while folding newspapers for his paper route on the morning of February 3, 1959, the line, February made me shiver/with every paper I'd deliver.

He also stated in an editorial published on the 50th anniversary of the crash in 2009 that writing the first verse of the song exorcised his long-running grief over Holly's death.

So responding to a post on a 80s FB page I belong to, on what was your first concert. I met a guy named Larry from Mason city, Iowa who his first concert was Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper Feb 2nd, 1959. His first concert was their last. Anyone who truly knows me knows how much I love Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens music. It was great talking with Larry who also sent me a picture of a flyer he kept from the show and paper ticket. A huge part of my life is music (listening that's about it lol) but music truly brings so many people together, it's there in our best and worst times and attached to most of our memories. It was very interesting talking to him and to be able to share parts of their last concert with me that I didn't know. Social media isn't a total waste of time...... #music #musicians #musicislife #buddyholly #ritchievalens #bigbopper #thenightmusicdied #rock #rocknroll #rockandroll #50s #50smusic #guitar #drums #vocals #lifehascolors #staysticky
