The intricate decoration on these bright yellow babouche indicates that these are ceremonial shoes. They are typical of the babouche worn to weddings in Morocco. Mid 20th century #weddingWednesday .

This #travelTuesday post are shoes that are actually made to make travel more difficult! These types of boots were used for prisoners in the western regions of the United States. Transporting criminals can be risky business for law enforcement officers. One way to prevent their escape is to load them down with heavy footwear. This device, called an ‘Oregon boot’, has a heavy metal ring that encircles one of the prisoner’s ankles, effectively hobbling the offender. American, 1910. .

We guess as long as this cold keeps up, we'll have to keep featuring warm and cozy #SockSunday posts! In many Saami communities, hand knit socks are often made using a style which is distinct to that particular community. These colourful socks are made with the traditional design of the Nesseby municipality in Finnmark county, Norway and feature traditional Saami colours and a style worn by both males and females.

We're very excited to be re-opening tomorrow, all freshened up and better than ever! If you come by to see us tomorrow, here is one of the treasures from our newest exhibition "The Gold Standard" that you can come and see in person. These red leather shoes come from Egypt and date to the post-pharonic period of Byzantine rule 330-641 C.E. Christianity had become the official state religion during this period and this pair of shoes reflects this shift. The motif of four heads surrounded by halos most likely depicts the four apostles of Christ suggesting that these shoes may have been designed for ecclesiastical use.
Byzantine, possibly from Achimim Panoplis, 400 C.E.

Only two more days till the BSM opens back up! In the meantime, here is another exhibition highlight you'll be able to see in person if you come and visit us later this week. This pair of almost impossibly narrow 19th century Adelaides and gloves belonged to Empress Elisabeth of Austria and are on display in our exhibition "Fashion Victims: The Perils and Pleasures of Dress in the 19th Century".
