Mr. Lee Valone Velour, one of the biggest names in the drag king scene. As he explains, “a drag king is anyone who has the intention to perform some version of masculinity. That can be any gender. It can be burlesque, lip syncing, performance art, or poetry.” Drag kings have been a significant part of the queer community since the late 1980s, but their roots in the US go back two centuries. “Garden” by Olivia Wendel. An artist and designer, Wendel sat down with AWT to talk about the value of intuition, both in creating her hand-painted silk scarves and running her business. The world she creates in her work is filled with figures, flora, and fauna, all coming together to create a dreamlike universe. And one of her main interests? Expressing how it feels to be a woman and exist in a woman’s body. Sylvia Plath (1932-63): Literature’s most famous madwoman. A poet and novelist, Plath’s career was plagued by depression and mania. Her semi-autobiographical novel “The Bell Jar” is based on her experience as an intern for Mademoiselle magazine, her subsequent descent into depression, and a suicide attempt. After Plath’s recovery, she completed her degree at Smith College and married the English poet Ted Hughes. Hughes allegedly abused Plath, and the couple’s relationship dissolved after Hughes had an affair and Plath was left alone in a London flat with two small children. She barely had time to write, often working in the early morning hours. Her despair drove her to commit suicide in 1963 by carbon monoxide poisoning—she was discovered with her head in the gas oven. “It Just Takes One Step to Start Your Journey” by Xochi Solis. In her work, Solis reflects on mood and emotional states. Each work is a construction beginning with paint, followed by a collection of materials, including: hand-dyed paper, vinyl, plastic, cork, and images from books and magazines. Layering these resources together creates a greater range of depth and shadow that allows each composition to increase in complexity as the stack of visual information grows. See more of her eye-catching work in our MEMORY issue! 🔵🔶♦️#awtmag #awt #xochisolis #mixedmedia #womensart #gouache #chulitavinylclub

Min Ji, Seoul, by Corinne Mariaud and part of the portrait series “Fake i Real Me,” which questions the importance young Asian women give to physical appearance. In Singapore, they wear colored contact lenses to enlarge their eyes, like a mask that both hides and exposes them. In Seoul, the pursuit of perfection is pushed to an extreme: Young women place physical beauty among the most important things in their lives, and use any tool to enhance their appearance, even cosmetic surgery, from the age of 15. The face becomes a personal construction, to be constantly reworked until it reaches an ideal beauty. 💎 See more of Corinne's work in our MEMORY issue! @corinnemariaud #awtmag #awt #womensmedia #corinnemariaud #french #singaporealliancefrançaise #Shanghai #popupseries #artsy #photography graphy #beauty #seoul

What an honor to be featured in this magazine. When I began this work I was focused on learning how to be a better artist in an authentic way which meant shedding a lot of preconceived notions of what identity means and the role that memory plays in coloring my/our perspective. up to this day i am surprised in how much this work resonates to such a wide variety of people and how many people can relate. Thank you everyone for being part of my Other Stories
