Royal Air Force Avro Lancasters are depicted here during an incendiary raid allegedly over Berlin in 1944.

Choosing to fly night operations while the U.S. Army Air Force braved the skies and flew by the light of day, RAF Bomber Command heavy bombers dropped a total of 45,517 tons of bombs on Berlin alone during World War II, compared to about half that number dropped on the Nazi capital by the Americans. The first raid against Berlin for the Avro Lancaster was during the night of November 18/19, 1943, which happened to also be the first raid of Great Britain's first large-scale, consistent bombing campaign against Berlin of the war, which lasted until March 1944.

440 Lancasters were involved in this raid of firsts and accompanied by four de Havilland Mosquito fighter bombers. Cloud cover cloaked the city and resulted in minor damage.
Looking down forward in to the cockpit of avro Lancaster bomber "old Fred" At the imperial war museum in London.

Built by metropolitan vickers in Manchester between may & November 1943.
Powered by four Rolls Royce merlin engines with a total of 5120bhp

The glow inside, still it remains how it was when the war ended more than 72 years ago

Fascinating

Type 5C/761 WW2 fuse boxes. Used in the Spitfire and other aircraft. The 2 with printing on the cover seems to identify a bomber and possibly used by the Avro Lancaster. Pieces of history.

So interesting to finally go through Grandads #RAF logbooks and associated belongings after 70 years of storage.

Turns out he was with 514 Squadron at RAF Waterbeach for 6 months during 1945 as a Navigator on the #Avro #Lancasters (Left on the photo). He then converted to a Navigator with 216 Squadron on the #C47 #Dakota in Egypt and the Middle East after the war. In the end he finished in the RAF with nearly 300 and 400 hours flying in the Lanc and #Dak respectively - not bad considering none of the family knew he flew on Dakotas at all!
