Q: why do children on the ASD spectrum engage in head banging and other self harming behaviors?? Answer:

Head banging can be a surprisingly common behavior in many children. Up to 20% of babies and toddlers bang their heads purposefully, with boys being up to three times more likely to engage in this behavior than girls. Head banging often starts at around 6 months, peaking anywhere between 18-24 months of age. This habit can stretch out for months (even years), but most children outgrow this behavior by the age of three to four. This behavior may extend later for children diagnosed with autism, developmental delays, or who have suffered from neglect.

1. Sensory Processing: Head banging, like body rocking, is a rhythmic physical movement. When a child is in utero, they feel the sensation of being rocked as their mother moves about, and is later rocked in their caregiver’s arms as an infant. As children mature, this rocking sensation is further developed through play that activates both the vestibular system in the brain (the part of the sensory system that is responsible for motion sense and balance) and the proprioceptive system (the sensory system that provides the body with information regarding where it is in space) that includes activities like: sliding, swinging, riding bikes, etc. When a child’s nervous system is under-stimulated (i.e. he or she receives limited to no sensory input from any of the sensory systems for a variety of natural or environmental causes), he/she may head bang to increase stimulation. To the opposite effect, a child who’s nervous system is hyper-sensitive and thus over-stimulated may head-bang as a comforting behavior, and thus as a way to decrease the stimulation around them while moderating their over-loaded sensory system. #autism #headbanging #autismparentingmagazine .... continued below ⤵️

Look closely in Jude's ear 👀✨ In our family we’re all sensitive to noise, so a pair of good ear-plugs is a must have. When I found out about @discovervibes, I was stoked. Vibes are hi-fidelity earplugs that lower volume to more comfortable levels while still allowing the user to hear their environment with much more clarity than normal plugs.

I love that they come with 3 sizes of soft, interchangeable tips in every package so they fit everyone.

With @discovervibes, people with autism and SPD can enjoy activities that would otherwise feel uncomfortably loud, while still being able to engage in conversations and hear everything clearly. I personally can’t stand crowds and concerts because of the noise but with Vibes, I’d feel comfortable attending a loud event.

After a minute, you won’t even notice they’re in your ears. It’s a lot more convenient than those big earmuffs you put on your head. Charlie and Jude wouldn’t keep these on.

If you look closely, you’ll see even Jude is wearing his in this photo. The look of peace on his face says it all. If you wanna to try them out, I have coupon code for you. Use code AUTISMCAFE for 15% off + free shipping. They make great stocking stuffers and gifts this holiday season. #sponsored #discovervibes

Sexual Myth Buster: Sex & Disabilities
__________________
Truth: Individuals with physical disabilities or limitations such as a spinal cord injury ,stroke, MS etc may experience changes in sexual functioning depending on the degree of the disability.
___________________
However, that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy sex with the help of sex toys and physical aids i.e. bed modifications, sex positioning or through the help of a qualified and trained occupational therapy provider or sex therapist.
__________________
Some individuals with spinal cord injury may have limited or no sexual sensation in the genitals(depending on if it a complete or incomplete SCI), but still feel sexual desire and arousal.
____________________
Genital stimulation itself can elicit sexual arousal and even orgasm in some women with complete spinal cord injuries.

The big day arrives, my husband and I journey to the hospital, all while the contractions are becoming more and more intense. What seems like an hour-long drive, we finally arrived at the hospital. Before they could get me onto the stretcher, my water broke. The nurse looks at me and says “when you leave this hospital you will be going home with a baby.” _______________________

I smiled as I settled into my labor and delivery room as I prepared for the arrival of my baby boy. Although I had a cesarean with my previous delivery, I wanted to attempt a VBAC a vaginal birth after a cesarean....👶🏽

Self-Care Empowerment: Although I feel under the weather 😷 I still took time out to love on myself. I colored my hair yesterday. Today I took my daughter to get a mommy and daughter mani, went shopping and had lunch. Now I’m in bed nursing flu like symptoms with a box of Kleenex next to me🤧🤒

Dealing with temper tantrums, can be both physically and emotionally draining, but it is important that we exercise restraint and patience when addressing the behavior.
_________________
Let us stop for a moment and think... During kicking, screaming and downright frustration, what are our children trying to communicate to us during a temper tantrum?
__________________
A temper tantrum could mean that your child is tired, sleepy, hungry, or uncomfortable; or it could mean they want something, they can’t have at that moment i.e an object or your undivided attention.
__________________
Usually by the time a child is nine years old, they should have developed the appropriate language skills to express their feelings, wants and needs.
__________________
Something that is important to consider is where the child is developmentally. A child that is developmentally delayed may lack the appropriate communication, negotiating and problem solving skills relative to their age.....

Social Media Givers: Someone who gives social media equity and support through likes, comments, shares your post and Insta Stories etc. #Engagement

Social Media Takers: Someone who finds ( educational, professional or inspirational) value in the things you post, but gives nothing in return ie likes, comments, shares #Engagement etc.

Which one are you?
_______________
Starting in 2018 I am going to make some changes to how and what I post. I will still continue to post information and educational, professional development content and some videos, however I am going to scale back in how much information I share on social media. I am working to develop a fee based platform (ie video series, webinars, Google Adsense, 1-1 career development coaching etc) where I will provide more in-depth information and videos.
