"Cave of the Stone Sepulcher", Actun Tunichil Mukal, aka ATM was researched by archaeologists beginnng in the 1990's. There are over 200 ceramic vessels and the skeletal remains of 14 humans (seven are children). The people and pottery are believed to have been sacrifices to the rain god, Chaac. The pottery and skeletons are approximately 1200 years old. You must hike in to get to the cave, then swim to enter the cave, then hike and swim to reach the dry chamber. Once in the dry chamber, the only thing between you and the artifacts is a strip of orange tape on the ground and your own conscience. It is surreal and a little eerie to see the remains with nothing but your headlamp for light.

AMAZING experience I couldn't record because the cave is sacred but if you're ever in Belize and love cave expeditions you must not miss it! 🙌🏽
Journey to the heart ❤️of the Mayan Underworld "Xibalba"......Cave of the Stone Sepulcher in Belize. This is definitely on the top 5 of my travel adventures so far. I had to hike cross a river 3 times and swim 🏊 into the cave to start. We were required to wear a helmet/headlamp that helped us maneuver inside and witness the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It was a tight squeeze at some places and the water could be chest deep. Lots of walking, climbing, and squeezing. There were vampire bats 🦇inside and giant spiders 🕷 the size of a hand at the cave entrance. Recommended only if you are physically in good shape and love Indiana Jones type of adventures 🗺 💙See my next post for more.....#belize #atmcave #actuntunichilmuknal #travel #actuntunichilmuknalcave #adventuretravel #mayancave #mayanruins #xibalba #sacredcave
Named Top Sacred Cave by National Geographic and known as ATM in Belize 🇧🇿 We had to take off our shoes and climb a tall ladder to enter the cathedral to view "The Crystal Maiden" 💀She has been calcified and crystallized over time after being sacrificed to the Gods during drought and famine. It is actually one of two skeletons we saw in the cathedral. There were also pottery shards, blood letting dishes, and other artifacts used by the ancient ones left in the cave. This is a very sacred Mayan site that I feel fortunate to have experienced. It is absolutely magnificent!!! 🏧#belize #crystalmaiden #actuntunichilmuknal #atmcave #humansacrifice #actuntunichilmuknalcave #adventuretravel #travel #mayancave #mayanruins #xibalba #sacredcave Note: cameras are not allowed in the cave so this is not my photo.

Today we hiked/swam through a cave to see the world number one sacred caves - a sacrificial site of the Mayan people. We weren't allowed cameras so here is a photo of one of the wall paintings in the town we're staying 💀🏺#cave #atmcave #actuntunichilmuknal #mayanruins #nohealthandsafetyregulations #sanignacio #belize
No cameras allowed beyond this point ! This is the only picture I have of one of the scariest and most exciting experience of my life - Spelunking (Caving)at the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves aka ATM Caves ! The caves have an ancient history of ritual and ceremonies including human sacrifices by the Mayans to appease the gods.... access to this underground sacrificial site involves hiking, swimming, wading through narrow crevices and passages and climbing some very sharp, steep and slippery rocks for appx 1.6 km to see the remains, crystals and pottery shards from the Mayan era. I am covered in nicks, cuts and bruises, my nails are smashed to bits but it was so worth it !! If you are ever in Belize and are the adventurous type you cannot afford to miss this... look it up now ! #atmcaves #actuntunichilmuknal #sanignacio #belize #centralamerica #travel #travelbug #travelphotography #canon #canonphotography #canon70d #wanderlust #adventuretravel #caves #maya #spelunking #caving

Today I climbed, swam and hiked through an old Mayan cave named Actun Tunichil Muknal. I wasn't allowed to bring a camera into the cave so the pictures are from Google. It is defintley one of my highlights. #belize #actuntunichilmuknal #sanignicio #solotraveler #femaletraveler #globetrotter #jodopåäventyr #cave #adventure #skeleton #mayan #history #sanctuary #freakingawesome

National Geographic named the Belize 🇧🇿 ATM cave #1 sacred cave in the world. I highly recommend taking this journey with Belize Family Adventure. Our guide, Edward is very knowledgeable & engaging. Another guide Patrick is friendly & has a great sense of humor, called me "Adventure Mom," I'll take it! 💪 **
"Actun Tunichil Muknal, Belize
In myths, journeys to the underworld are never easy, and after visiting Actun Tunichil Muknal (Cave of the Stone Sepulchre), you may feel that you have been through your own epic test. Access to the Maya sacrificial site within the cave involves hiking, wading, and underwater swimming, but nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) underground you will reach the resting place of the “crystal maiden,” a complete female skeleton that sparkles from eons of crystal calcification. The cave also contains Maya pottery shards, many showing the “kill hole” intended to allow spirits to escape." @natgeo

Departing San Ignacio to Placencia. One of my favorite experiences in the jungle, trekking through ATM Cave, a sacred burial site where human sacrifices took place in AD 700-900. We saw ceramic offerings as well as the skeletons that lie here. #JustBelize2017 #actuntunichilmuknal
