Hope Hall Series - The chapel at the asylum was broken into several months ago & vandalized. All that remains on the grounds is a few vacant buildings with windows and doors boarded up as if to hide the memories these walls contain. I pray that those who were patients here eventually found the peace I'm sure they longed for. An empty building is left here, but I hope the doors they faced ahead were wide open with promise and people who were understanding. If you know someone who suffers from mental illness please offer them grace & remember these images from Hope Hall. See more at #fh4_HopeHall

Hope Hall Series - Though it was an institution for the " violently insane", it became a functioning community complete with a cannery, bakery and even a dairy farm where patients worked. A fire at the hospital killed 37 patients in 1918 and 36 of them are buried in a nearby cemetery. Now vacant, these buildings mimic the emptiness many of the people who walked its halls surrendered to. #fh4_hopehall

Hope Hall Series - In 1899, Dr. David Griffin, a psychiatrist from North Carolina, moved here to treat patients who were labeled "violently insane". Upon seeing the word "insane" carved into the entrance gates, he personally chiseled the word off. Initially named Central State Hospital for the Insane, it would later be known as Griffin Memorial Hospital. This is another look at the abandoned chapel.
