Eastern Air Lines service in much better days.
In the 1950s and Early 60s eastern dominated the market on the east coast with their quick reliable service, perfect for the growing amount of business fliers.

Old vs new! Eastern DC-9-15 and Delta 717-200 (MD-95) parked next to each other at the gate.
I'm almost done with the airport. I'm still actively looking for a NYC skyline backdrop that isn't a close-up. Also working on a cargo area as well! The buildings are all drawn out on the wood.

In 1989 Eastern Shuttle, was sold to now President of the United States Donald Trump and renamed Trump Shuttle. By March 9th, Eastern entered bankruptcy protection allowing Texas Air to operate Eastern without Unionized employees.
Management was constantly shifted and replaced in a last frantic effort to make a profit. As you can probably guess, this did not happen.
Eastern Air Lines would stop flying January 19th 1991 despite selling reservations the same day.

Unable to keep their head above water. Frank Boreman agreed to sell Eastern to Texas Air in 1986 and Boreman was freed with very comfortable benifits, and in good timing too, as Eastern was investigated, and in 1987 was fined 9.5 Million for safety violations due to Boreman's cut backs. A year later, 4,000 employees were elimated to reduce Easterns presence in the west. In 1989 labour disputes lead to striking which further dug into Easterns finances and their paper thin repuation.

In the 1970s Eastern would hire former astronaut Frank Boreman. In a few short years he would move the Eastern headquarters from Rockefeller Center in New York to Miami and make a large purchase of A300s. A year later he would make another large order and be the launch customer for the 757. This, mixed with high fuel prices, Easterns profits began to nose dive. Eastern then came up with the idea of "Midnight specials" Basically, passengers would purchase tickets threw Eastern on cargo planes that had passenger seats, since the cargo compartment was meant for cargo, each passenger was only allowed two carry on baggage and any checked bags were extra charge and shipped standby.

In 1956 Eastern purchased Colonial Airlines, an airline with hubs in Newark and Montreal, opening Eastern Airlines to Canadian routes.
Rickenbakers continued refusal to purchase jet aircraft would lead to his removal as CEO in 1959, but would stay as Director and Chairman until 1963. In 1960, Easterns first jet aircraft, the DC8-21, began to fly their longer routes. They'd also purchase 720's and were the first airline to fly the 727 on Febuary 4 1964. After Rickenbakers retirement, Eastern would change their look to what is know as the "hockey stick" design. By 1970 Eastern had purchased A300s and L1011 Tristars for Caribbean and European routes.

Eastern Airlines Lockheed Constellation receiving a drink from owner Eddie Rickenbaker.
Founded in 1926 as Pitcairn Aviation, before other airlines would be merged into it to simplify US mail transport and a buy out by General Motors, the name would be changed to Eatern Air Transport. In 1938, American World War I ace, race car driver and automotive designer Eddie Rickenbaker would purchase the company from General Motors with a check of 3.5 Million. Eastern already had a monopoly on domestic routes in the eastern states and by 1939 they had 15 weekday flights out of Newark alone. After World War II Eastern would be the most profitable airline post-war. In the mid 1950s that would all change and their position would be eroded by rivals and the entry of the jet age.

#EasternAirlines acquired DC-10s in the 1980s to fly its prized Miami-London route. Though there was talk of a Miami-Madrid route, London would be the airline’s only transatlantic destination. .
.
The DC-10s came into service after the airline had removed the white paint from its planes, leaving the trademark, two-tone blue stripe against the #silvermetallic skin of the plane. The elegant scheme recalled an early #tagline, #theGreatSilverFleet. .
.
For most of its history, Eastern was plagued with poor labor relations. Poor labor relations with mechanics resulted in the London flight often being cancelled, leading to the route’s termination even before Miami’s legacy, hometown carrier went out of business in 1989. . .
