In 1969, the manifold interests of psychedelic hippies and civil rights activists dovetailed across two nights at BAM when jazz prophet ✨#SunRa✨ joined radical writer #AmiriBaraka (then known as #LeRoiJones) on the Howard Gilman Opera House Stage. The following night? Legendary Beat poet #AllenGinsberg appeared alongside #TheBand. Sun Ra makes a BAM homecoming of sorts this Mon, Feb 6, when his iconic Afrofuturist film Space is the Place screens as part of our #FightthePower: #BlackSuperheroes on Film series: BAM.org/fightthepower ✊🏿
This month and every month, let’s celebrate the remarkable stories and achievements of Black artists, and #LetsAmplifyBlackVoices. Happy #BlackHistoryMonth!

From the #BAMHammArchives: #KevinKline, #FionaShaw, and the late John Barton in 1997 during Barton’s educational Shakespeare Workshop: How Shakespeare Writes to Help the Actor. All of us at BAM send our condolences to Barton’s family, friends, and colleagues @thersc on the loss of this beloved and trailblazing talent. Barton’s career at BAM began back in 1974, when he brought The Hollow Crown—his iconic, devised tetralogy of #Shakespeare’s most celebrated history plays—to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House stage.

A very happy birthday to the late Alvin Ailey, who would be 87 years old today! Choreographer #AlvinAiley formed his company the @alvinailey American Dance Theater in 1958. Ailey wrote in his autobiography, “The concert dance scene was basically closed to black dancers... I very much wanted to be a choreographer... and the time had come for me to make my own decisions.” His company first performed at BAM in 1968 and Ailey served as artistic director of the troupe until his death in 1989. AAADT continued to perform regularly at BAM over the years, and notably celebrated its 50th anniversary season in the Howard Gilman Opera House in 2008.

This #WorldAIDSDay, we remember the countless artists lost to HIV/AIDS (like Arnie Zane, left) and remain committed to those currently fighting the pandemic (like Bill T. Jones, right). Stay strong. Stay informed. Get tested. And remember, treatment is prevention.

Tonight & tomorrow, @therealjohncale and some very special guests celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Velvet Underground & Nico.
49+ years ago, #TheVelvetUnderground (“the unusual foursome”) "rock[ed] the crystal chandeliers and flutter[ed] the flags" in our "stately foyer" at an opening night benefit before a Merce Cunningham performance at BAM.

11 years ago, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker reprised her very first performance–Fase–in celebration of Steve Reich’s 70th birthday at #BAMNextWave 2006. First performed in 1982, the piece is comprised of three duets and one solo choreographed to four repetitive compositions by the American minimalist. De Keersmaeker uses the structure of Reich’s music to develop an independent movement idiom that not only illustrates the score, but also expands it by playing with continuously changing forms and patterns.

Prepare yourself for more pathbreaking performance this fall when the 2017 Next Wave Festival arrives on Sep 14. For tickets, visit BAM.org/NextWave (link in bio!)
