Hi, my name is Antranik Tavitian and this is my week to takeover Instagram from the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP).@la_centerofphoto

This is the first pairing of images which I’ll be sharing throughout the week from my ongoing project titled “Hidden in the Leaves”. •
These images explore the experience of living as a first gen Armenian-Armenian in a cultural middle ground and how my cultural background is attached to a mix of people, places, and objects within my hometown of Glendale, California; An ethnic enclave within Los Angeles, California (which contains the largest concentration of Armenians outside of the country of Armenia).

The first image is of a cup of traditional Armenian coffee. Whenever you visit the house of an Armenian, or middle easterners for that matter, you’re often offered a cup of coffee while you sit and talk. This sharing of coffee is often the setting through which I’ve been able to connect with my parents and learn about my cultural heritage. You see, I was born in the US while my parents immigrated here from Syria. So one of the few sources of attachment to my culture I have is through my parents.

The second image is of a man named Oleg who I met during a morning walk at Fremont Park, a park i regularly visited as a child.

Antranik Tavitian is a first generation Armenian-American born in Los Angeles, California to Syrian-Armenian parents born in Aleppo, Syria. His photography focuses on the intersectional exploration of social issues, ethnicity, and identity through both personal reflection and current events.

The first image is of a relief statue carving of an Armenian cross located at St. Mary’s Armenian Church in Glendale, Calif. Armenia was the first nation to take on Christianity as its official religion. As Armenian immigrant started coming state side, some of the things they brought with them and gave such valuable cultural importance to became religious symbols such as this one. •
The second image is of a painting of the Armenian alphabet that hangs in my home in Glendale, Calif. like the cross, this too hold significance to Armenian culture. The Armenian Alphabet was said to have been founded by Mesrop Mashtots in the early 5th century AD. Paintings or tapestries such as this are found in, more often than not, every Armenian’s home.

The first image is of a cluster of fall leaves I found hanging by a single spider web. I had passed by it while walking my dog, but unfortunately didn’t have my camera (A Bronica medium format I had been borrowing from a fiend) so as soon as I got home I ran inside, grabbed my camera, ran back to the Leaves and made this exposure. The second image is of a group of elderly Armenian men who gather at my local park everyday to play chess, backgammon or cards. I like to think they form in clusters like the leaves in the first image.

Self portrait of Arshile Gorky (Vostanik Manoug Adoian) 1927-28, an Armenian-American painter.
Gorky has been hailed as one of the most powerful American painters of the 20th century.

His works were often speculated to have been informed by the suffering and loss he experienced in the Armenian Genocide.(1915, when he was only 11 years old). In 1933, Gorky became one of the first artists employed by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project.

Gorky's " contributions to American and world art are difficult to overestimate. His work as lyrical abstraction was a "new language. He "lit the way for two generations of American artists". The painterly spontaneity of mature works like The Liver is the Cock's Comb (1944), One Year the Milkweed (1944), and The Betrothal II (1947) immediately prefigured Abstract expressionism, and leaders in the New York School have acknowledged Gorky's considerable influence”

Time to revisit @systemofadown! This time I brave #toxicity, but end up causing my own: this vid’s chock full of background noise and <gasp> the top of my head! But I’m more concerned the references and jokes, which I know my viewers get (you people are the greatest).
