Crunchy pine cones which are a cross between @zuzazakcooks favourite Polish sweet snacks: szyszki and sezamki made with the popular Polish sweets: krowki (little cows) and rye preparowany (puffed rice), with toasted sesame seeds and melted butter. Totallly impossible for me to eat these one at a time as they are so good...however much I try!! I had fun shaping them into pine cones too. I was excited to get the ingredients from my local Polski sklep (although available at supermarkets too). Made as part of my #52cookerybooks project #52cookerybooks_week27

Rich Ukrainian borscht with beef and butter beans. This is the first dish I have made from #polskanewpolishcooking by @zuzazakcooks. Zuza explains that the soup can be a meal in itself due to it’s thick stew-like consistency. It has a beautiful crimson colour from the beetroot. The sour cream compliments it so well. There is also a vegetarian version of the soup in the book. I bought the handmade lace cloth in the photograph in an amazing Sunday Market in Plac Nowy, Krakow. Pineapple carpaccio takes 10 minutes to make! Thin slices of pineapple with blueberries served with Greek yoghurt rippled with homemade mint oil, garnished with shredded mint, lime zest and juice. A really refreshing zingy pudding. Easy sausage carbonara made with Italian style sausages with tomato, fennel and herbs from my local butchers. This is the first dish I have made from #5ingredients by @jamieoliver. It was absolutely delicious, and only took minutes to make, 18 meatballs from 3 sausages and 5 ingredients in total! The creamy sauce was made from 1 egg, chopped parsley, grated parmesan and some of the pasta water. @jamieoliver what a brilliant idea to put this book together, cooking from scratch, a small shopping list and recipes that are healthy with and quick to make! Pineapple chicken- my second dish from #stircrazy by @chinghehuang. Why does chicken and pineapple go so well together? This dish absolutely capitalises on this fact. I love the flavour the seasoned cornflour coating gives the chicken when it is stir-fried. Ching suggests smoked tofu (another new favourite of mine @ellypear) can be substituted for the chicken. Because you get the wok very hot at the beginning, before you add any of the ingredients, the vegetables in the stir-fry retain their crispy textures and flavours. Ching explained how important it was to hear the ‘sizzle’ throughout whilst stir-frying. It is such a quick process too, the meal was ready in minutes, some of the ingredients in under 30 seconds!

Kong Po Tofu- my first dish made from #stircrazy by @chinghehuang. This is a great Sichuan dish invented in the 19th Century by the Governor of the area Ding Baozhen. It has a delicious, sweet and tangy flavour which compliments the tofu (Seasoned chicken strips can be substituted for the tofu). Ching explained to me when I spoke to her, how her book can work for vegans/vegetarians and meat eaters alike, you just change the protein source to suit your particular needs.

It’s Monday which means a change of book for my #52cookerybooks project. This is my 25th book, each week I focus in depth into one of my cookery books. I have chosen #stircrazy (2017) by @chinghehuang #52cookerybooks_week25. The book contains 100 stir-fry recipes. Many of the recipes are gluten free and dairy free as well as suitable for vegan and vegetarians. I hope to speak to Ching later today to find out more about her book to share with you. •

Last night I attended the @farmdrop ‘Zero Waste Food Busk’ in aid of @stmungos with @eliza_moreland.
Each component of the meal had been specifically chosen to show how delicious food can be prepared from ingredients that might normally be discarded. In the UK we throw away 7million tonnes of food each year. The starter, as in the photograph was by @pocotapasbar. We enjoyed Iranian beetroot leaf, yoghurt and walnut dip, carrot and fennel top pesto, skordalia-green potato and garlic dip all served with potato skins. I am very disappointed in myself about the main course, I couldn’t even try it! It was fish head curry by @nutmegbristol. I watched people around me tucking in with delight, I did enjoy the vegetarian option which was kitchen sink kofta! For pudding we had a delicious @ellypear bread pudding with apple compote and cinnamon sugar made with stale sourdough bread. In between courses we sowed our own micro herbs with @growbristol to take home to grow. It was the most radical meal I have ever eaten and the most thought provoking. It has certainly changed has made me think more deeply about food waste. More photographs of the Supper on my story. •

Lentil, tomato and coconut dhal with wilted geeens and yoghurt. The fourth and final recipe using the dhal ‘base’ from @ellypear book ‘Let’s Eat!’ I have added different ingredients to this dish that are not quite as in Elly’s book. But after having spoken to Elly, I know that she is passionate about her recipes being used as inspiration. I used kale as it is in season at the moment (it was wilted in butter, lemon juice) and I make kefir every week following my workshop with @every.good.thing, so it was natural for me to use that instead of yoghurt. Lentil, tomato and coconut dhal with a six minute egg and toasted breadcrumbs. This is my third recipe from ‘Let’s Eat!’ by @ellypear. It was made with the batch of ‘base’ dhal I made earlier this week. I have now discovered that eggs and dhal are made for each other, and as for toasted breadcrumbs that had been fried in olive oil, it was lucky that any of them got to the dish after I had started sampling them! Lentil, tomato and coconut dhal as a soup with roasted peppers and toasted cashews, my second recipe from ‘Let’s Eat!’ by @ellypear. This soup was made with the batch of ‘base’ dhal I made earlier! I added my own marinated red peppers (recipe also in the book). I served the soup with chilli, tomato, garlic and fresh coriander flatbread from #abunoorpittafactory. I made the soup as part of my #52cookerybooks project #52cookerybooks_week24. I have been taking a mug of it to work each day, a perfect treat on a cold January day.

Lentil, tomato and coconut dhal with seared tofu, avocado, pickles and seeds-from ‘Let’s Eat!’ by @ellypear made as part of my #52cookerybooks project #52cookerybooks_week24. I am really impressed by the concept of this book. There are 3 chapters:-
1. Freeze for Ease
2. Building the blocks
3. Menus
The ‘Freeze for Ease’ chapter has five different recipes that can be made in bulk and frozen for future use. Elly suggests four more dishes for each base recipe. I have made all of the four dishes that can be made from the dhal. The seared tofu, avocado, pickles and seeds is the first example of this. It was absolutely delicious. It was so easy just to take a serving of the dhal and add to it. I am now a fan of tofu, this was a smoked variety. I just seared in olive oil which gives it a crispy outer crunch. •

After having met @ellypear at her cafe on Friday, I walked through Stokes Croft towards the Gloucester Road to buy ingredients to make dishes from Elly’s book ‘Let’s Eat’ for my #52cookerybooks project. As I walked along I could smell a wonderful smoky charcoal aroma. I crossed the road and discovered it was jerk chicken being cooked on an oil drum grill outside #riceandthings. I love Bristol every which way you turn there is a food gem waiting to be found that celebrates the diversity and the incredible culture of food in Bristol. •

It’s Monday, so a new book for my #52cookerybooks project #52cookerybooks_week24. Each week I focus on one of my cookery books and my 24th book is ‘Let’s Eat!’ by @ellypear. I met Elly last week in her cafe- Pear Cafe, near the centre of Bristol to talk about her book. She explained to me how her book creates food that fits into busy modern lives. I will be mainly focusing on the first chapter of the book where Elly gives five different freezable base recipes, each with four different ways of making them into a another meal. I am really looking forward to exploring this concept and sharing the food I make. •

French-style shiitake ‘snails’ from ‘Vegan in 7’ by @ritaserano. I have to say this is my favourite dish so far from the book. Shiitake mushrooms cooked in a garlic and onions with a splash of water finished with parsley and tamari. Totally fat free and you really can’t tell!
