Look what I just picked up from the shop after being repaired for a month! Some of you might remember the story on this sewing machine. A couple of years ago one of my kiddos pushed this off my desk while searching for a bead that had rolled underneath. The screen cracked in the fall, and I was unable to change any settings on it. I was still able to straight stitch, but there were definitely issues and it wasn't really functional. Rather than fix it, I decided to replace it with a Brother straight stitch machine for quilting. Here I am two years later, and most of the sewing I do lately is repairing clothes which requires more than a straight stitch. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get this guy repaired. I'm kind of excited to have it back again! It's so much easier to use than my tiny Singer I bought when I first started sewing. Having it back makes me want to start a project! The repair guy gave me back my cracked screen which is a little depressing to see. Glad they could fix it.

Fall is my favorite, and now that the temps have cooled off, I can bake bread again!

When your sister is having twins in just two days, and she requests macarons, you make macarons! Now to figure out how to get them safely to Boston with my mom in her luggage! I'm only sending empty shells for them to fill once my mom arrives. Of course I put together a few for us-- chocolate ganache and pistachio.

My younger sister is having twins in just a few days. I'm surprised at all the emotions this event has brought up for me. It is making me so nostalgic for when my own twins were babies. Now, 8 years later, I get to remember the fun parts about having twins and get to enjoy them as humans and not just needy littles. This twinner will forever be my willing photo subject. She's such a good sport.

I took a photography field trip with my girls last night out to the Salt Flats. I met up with a few other #utahclickinmoms and their kiddos. It is a very long drive out there and it was chilly and windy, but a really fun adventure with my girls!

I was thinking about my sweet grandma today as I took a moment to study this oil painting she painted that now hangs in my home. I wish I could ask her what she was thinking when she painted it. I'd love all the details about the setting. She didn't start painting until she was in her 60s and started taking classes once her children all left home. I always like to believe I'm channeling her creative spirit when I venture into new things. I'm considering what I want to do next now that I've closed the quilting chapter in my life. It's scary to try new things and get out of my comfort zone, but I'm so glad she was willing to do that so I can learn from her example.

Viewing the solar eclipse was an incredible experience. Going through my photos from yesterday helps me forget the misery of being in the car for 9 hours for what would normally be a 3 hour trip. Both my daughters said it was the best two minutes of their lives! Definitely worth it (now that we're home).

Another day of avoiding household tasks, another batch of macarons. We need variety right? I'm taking these to two events this weekend, and you can't just have one flavor! These will be Nutella ganache. The shells have a bit of cocoa in them, which adds a nice subtle flavor. I did take my kids school shopping this morning, but I'm avoiding cleaning my house this afternoon. The joys of summer! It's only 86 degrees outside today so I'm justifying baking in the "cooler" weather.

Macarons! I haven't made these in months! I'm avoiding taking my kids school shopping today and am doing a test batch in preparation for teaching my sister later this week. I decided today I'm officially a Silpat snoot and will no longer use any other mats. My batches on the silpats all turned out so good. My other two mats resulted in sloped shells which didn't rise evenly. I'm ever so slowly perfecting my process. These are a lot of work but so pretty when they are done!

From our week! Family time at my uncle's cabin, hiking, floating the river, Yellowstone, staying up too late, time with cousins! While in Yellowstone we played the license plate game. We very proudly found every single US state and 7 of the Canadian Provinces. I found Hawaii very last and was so excited that I thoroughly embarrassed my teenage niece and nephew! This was kind of our last big thing before school starts. Now that we're two weeks away from the beginning of school I'm starting to panic. All of the sudden I'm so not ready to go back to that routine again!

"Good evening Earth female. Please put chocolate chips or another sweet treat into the scoop or you will be destroyed." This child has read way too much Calvin and Hobbs lately.

My kids love perler beads, and we have made many, many projects with them, but this weekend's project tops them all. My little boy loves Mario and designed this. He got a few of the designs from Pinterest and then put them together in his own arrangement. This was 6 large boards hooked together. It's made from more than 5000 beads and was definitely a family effort at the end. It took me an hour just to iron it tonight and was so tricky. He is absolutely thrilled with the outcome!

I'm finished! For the past month I've been refinishing my kitchen cabinets. It was so much work, especially with the kids out of school. I put the door hardware on yesterday and am calling this project complete. I debated for so long about refinishing my kitchen. I haven't liked the original color (shown in last photo) for years, but I was too scared to actually do anything. I really wanted a white kitchen, but I've seen lots of painted cabinets that have gone very poorly and didn't want to ruin our cabinets. I finally settled on gel stain in java after redoing our bathroom vanity and have been so happy with the change. Someday we'll redo the counters and backsplash, but that's down the list quite a ways. My next project is redoing our floors. I intend to learn how to lay laminate and replace everything in our kitchen, living room and family room. I told my husband it's just like quilting except with power tools!

Explored our state a bit more yesterday! We visited the ATK rocket display at their facility, then the Golden Spike Monument which commemorates the joining of the continental railroad. We also stopped at the Spiral Jetty in the Salt Lake. I've always wanted to see the Spiral Jetty because it's just so random. The hubs informed me his teenage self would have hated me for dragging him out to it. His adult self wasn't super impressed either, but I thought it was pretty cool. It's an art instillation that is only visible when the lake level is low enough. It was submerged from the 70s to 2002 and has been visible since then. Thanks to @utahsadventurefamily for all the great ideas! They are my go-to people for local places to explore with my kiddos!

A few macro shots of some tiny little miniature roses I bought yesterday. The blooms of these little flowers aren't much bigger than a nickel!
