"I got the Academy Award for 'BUtterfield 8'. The reason was, I am afraid, that I had come within a breath of dying of pneumonia only a few months before. I was filled with profound gratitude at being considered by the industry an actress and not a movie star.” - Elizabeth Taylor, from her autobiography, on her first Oscar.

In 1963, Frank Sinatra hosted the 35th Oscars from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Did you know he had a rough start to his day? 'Variety' reported that when he tried to drive into the stage entrance, the police officer on duty didn’t recognize him and told Sinatra, “I don’t care who you are, I’m not supposed to let anyone in here.”

“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” which premiered 70 years ago, earned John Huston and his father Walter Oscars (John for Directing and Adapted Screenplay, Walter for Supporting Actor). John’s daughter Anjelica Huston would go on to win an Oscar for Supporting Actress in 1986 for her work in “Prizzi's Honor.” The Hustons are one of two families with three generations of Oscar winners.

Past Academy President Jean Hersholt once said that “an international award, if properly and carefully administered, would promote a closer relationship between American film craftsmen and those of other countries.” In 1956, the Foreign Language Film Award became a yearly competitive category and the first statuette went to the Italian film “La Strada,” by Federico Fellini. The director's films would go on to win three more times: for “The Nights of Cabiria” (1957), “Federico Fellini's 8½” (1963) and “Amarcord” (1974).

“I show up at the location in the morning and grab a cup of coffee. I go to hair and makeup, and put on the character’s clothes. I talk to the director and the other actors. The camera crew comes in and marks the set. We go through some rehearsals... And I have been doing the same preparation for roles my entire career. It works for me. It’s as exciting to me now as it was 30 years ago.” -Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, seen here on the set of “The Silence Of The Lambs.” For more images from the film, visit http://osca.rs/SilenceCollection.

"You know, when I was in college first starting out as an actor, they asked each one of us what we wanted to do. I said I want to be the best actor in the world. All the students in the classroom looked at me like I was a nut. Life has taught me to just try and be the best that I can be, and I thank the Academy for saying to me that on this given night I was the best that I could be." - Denzel Washington upon receiving his Best Actor Oscar for his performance in “Training Day”

"In my opinion, the writer should have the first and last word in filmmaking, the only better alternative being the writer-director, but with the stress on the first word." - Writer-director Orson Welles, whose sole Oscar was for writing.
