"I got the Academy Award for 'BUtterfield 8'. The reason was, I am afraid, that I had come within a breath of dying of pneumonia only a few months before. I was filled with profound gratitude at being considered by the industry an actress and not a movie star.” - Elizabeth Taylor, from her autobiography, on her first Oscar.

Past Academy President Jean Hersholt once said that “an international award, if properly and carefully administered, would promote a closer relationship between American film craftsmen and those of other countries.” In 1956, the Foreign Language Film Award became a yearly competitive category and the first statuette went to the Italian film “La Strada,” by Federico Fellini. The director's films would go on to win three more times: for “The Nights of Cabiria” (1957), “Federico Fellini's 8½” (1963) and “Amarcord” (1974).

“I show up at the location in the morning and grab a cup of coffee. I go to hair and makeup, and put on the character’s clothes. I talk to the director and the other actors. The camera crew comes in and marks the set. We go through some rehearsals... And I have been doing the same preparation for roles my entire career. It works for me. It’s as exciting to me now as it was 30 years ago.” -Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, seen here on the set of “The Silence Of The Lambs.” For more images from the film, visit

"You know, when I was in college first starting out as an actor, they asked each one of us what we wanted to do. I said I want to be the best actor in the world. All the students in the classroom looked at me like I was a nut. Life has taught me to just try and be the best that I can be, and I thank the Academy for saying to me that on this given night I was the best that I could be." - Denzel Washington upon receiving his Best Actor Oscar for his performance in “Training Day”
