"So, you're trans. Maybe you've come out in public, maybe you haven't. But you've got a great side hustle. You're a professional freelance copyeditor and writer, with years of experience and established relationships. Yet, existing in the modern era, you don't necessarily see your editors on a daily basis; indeed, you haven't met many of them. And those that you have met, even if you only see them briefly, are like family.⠀

Another job comes into your old inbox, addressed to a name you don't use anymore. You shudder as you respond, and then stop yourself as you "accidentally" write your chosen name at the bottom. You burst into tears as you change it back to your deadname, and send back your cheerful, chirpy email accepting the job. And you feel something shifts in you. And in that moment you know: I have to come out. Not for them, but for me.⠀

This is my story, but it could be so many others. As a trans woman who transitioned later in life, I have had the rare privilege of a previously established career, and somehow, I managed to keep it. Here's how I did it, flying by the seat of my pants, but with a little help from some folks who'd been there before." Story by #MyaByrne

I have all these little wisdoms written down in my notebook. Words that remind me to keep true to myself.⠀

I like visualising them, as a kind reminder to myself. Hope you enjoy them too 😊

"I eventually was able to be current with my emotions," she said. "I had stuffed the sadness, disappointment and hurt down for years." - Samantha Paige⠀

Think back to being 21 years old. The freedom, the excitement, how invincible you feel. Now imagine being 21 and diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Then, a few years later, you test positive as a carrier of the BRCA-1 gene which puts you at an increased risk of developing certain cancers. This sounds like a nightmare, but for Samantha Paige, it was a reality.⠀

While dealing with both of these diagnoses, battling cancer and enduring a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, she lived life on autopilot, never really allowing herself to fully confront the extreme depression and anxiety she was dealing with for years.⠀

Finally, after a breakdown, a breakthrough came in the form of another diagnosis: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. For Paige, it was a wakeup call. ⠀

We're sure that this question comes up pretty often. What would you do? ⠀
Click the link our bio for some helpful tips too!⠀

Question: I have been with my company for over a year and I am still on contract – is this normal? I have been working hard, tolerated a lot of things and have done my job. I have come to the realization that I have outgrown my role. I have been looking for a new position but had no responses. What do I need to do at this moment to make myself marketable on the job front and to better myself? How can I be able to come to work without feeling crabby or negative despite knowing that I have outgrown my role?⠀

Answer: "If you’ve asked your current company about opportunities to move into a permanent role, and the answer was vague or unpromising, it’s most likely time to begin your job search elsewhere."⠀

SAVE THE DATE: Tune in tomorrow at 4PM EST for our Facebook Live with Tarana Burke. women's rights and access advocate, who started the #MeToo movement over a decade ago. Post a question below and we will definitely ask about it during our Facebook chat. “I deeply believe that if we don’t quickly invest in the next generation that we’ll be in the same space in a few years,” Burke said. “My hope is that in fifty years, we’ll have a generation that has grown up their whole lives hearing about consent and boundaries—about humanity and dignity. That’s the way we have a shift in our culture.”

"Growing up in a small town in the South, I was known in school as “the smart Black girl,” who made straight A’s in every subject. When you’re the only minority in the room, you become keenly aware of the responsibility that comes with it. You are in charge of the paradigm being created, and it is your job to represent well in all situations because, ultimately, it is not about you; it’s about those who come after you." - #VonettaYoung

“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so that you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” .
I wrote an article about @wordsmeetwalls for @birchbox, and in it I talked about authenticity and how important it is when starting a side hustle. I really do feel that as time goes on both with @wordsmeetwalls and other parts of my life that I’m becoming more me with every step. Each project, post, idea stems from a place of authenticity.
.
I remember writing about a year ago that one of the strangest paradoxes of life is that you can’t choose who you are but you do have to choose to be that person. You can’t choose why you might love quotes, film, sustainability, etc. but you do have to choose to live them out authentically. .
Lastly — ( this message is a bit all over the place lol - writing sans coffee) — my birthday was a month or so ago and when talking to a friend about how I felt about getting another year older I said - “Honestly, I like getting older because I feel like I become more me or learn something new about myself every year.”

From today's brand new feature "Meet Bumble's Latest Buzzy Hires—Yes, They're Sisters" by @dithers02
https://buff.ly/2zyy28f⠀

"A few months back @whitneywolfeherd , the 20-something founder of @Bumble, met @sarafoster and @erinfoster at a panel event and the three bonded over the shared passion for supporting other women in their careers. "I felt like I couldn't live without them," Wolfe told @businessinsider . And apparently, she meant it. Last week, Wolfe made the Fosters joint heads of creative for @BumbleBizz, and @BumbleBFF.⠀

“Erin and Sara are true forces of nature and have already brought so much value to our brand and our culture,” Wolfe said in a press release. “The work we’re doing together will have such a positive impact on our overall user experience and give our brand a powerful new voice.”⠀

In case you aren't familiar with the Fosters, they're the sister duo behind the scripted reality-parody show Barely Famous on @VH1. Sara, 36, is a veteran TV actress (90210, anyone?) and writer Erin, 35, just sold a pilot to Fox, in addition to creating Insta stories that bring so much joy to my life."

From our latest series on being an interview boss - "Ask a Hiring Expert: What If the Salary I Asked For Is Too High?" ⠀

Q: I felt like I had a great interview and they really liked me. But when they asked for what I would want for salary they didn’t seem to be thrilled with my response. What should I do? Immediately say I will work for a lower salary? ⠀

A: First, a tip: this interview question is best answered after doing your homework. Research average salaries for the desired role and determines what you feel comfortable with. That way, when asked, you can confidently provide a target salary that is both practical and sufficient.⠀

“We should be shifting the conversation to this pervasive issue that is systemic,” Burke continued. “I want to decentralize myself as the central focus of this because this is not about the good work that this one Black woman did, it’s about the people who I did it for — the Black and Brown girls who initially inspired this work.”⠀

"On another note, a correction that I'm certainly glad the papers have been making in this lovely wave of victory is the acknowledgment of the first known Black trans person in state office in the United States, Rep. #AltheaGarrison. In 1992, she won a seat in the Massachusetts legislature — and was publicly outed right after the election. After her only term, 1993-1995, she wasn't able to win re-election, for reasons which, to some, seem connected to her trans status, and the journalists who doggedly outed her. Which is a shame.⠀

To her incredible credit, she never stopped running for public office — in fact, she lost her most recent race, for Boston City Council, this very week. She's never talked about being trans, and we know it wasn't her choice to be outed. It’s unfortunately quite safe to guess that has had an impact on her campaigns." - Mya Byrne from our latest article, "Reflections on Trans Candidates — Past, Present, and Future"⠀
