Inktober day 19 — The Unlucky Lady in Black at Hartshill Castle. The ghost of Hartshill is unidentified, but nobody is in any doubt that she is best avoided. For centuries the phantom lady in black has been seen moving slowly about the ruins of Hartshill Castle. One witness who encountered the ghost as he walked along the footpath that cuts alongside the old walls said that she came so close to him that he heard her silk dress rustle. Fortunately for him, she passed him by without a second look. For it is her glance that brings bad luck.
In 1947, some archaeological digs were undertaken on the site and one excavation revealed a long forgotten cellar with badly decomposed skeleton laying inside. 💀 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #ghost #ladyinblack

Inktober day 18 — The Lincoln Imp (detail) is a grotesque on a wall inside Lincoln Cathedral, England. According to a 14th-century legend, a mischievous creature called an imp was sent by Satan to do evil work on Earth. After causing mayhem in Northern England, the imp headed to Lincoln Cathedral, where it smashed tables and chairs and tripped up the Bishop. When an angel came out of a book of hymns and told it to stop, the imp started throwing rocks at the angel. As punishment the angel turned the imp to stone. 🎃 🎃 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #lincolnimp #grotesque #Gargoyle

Inktober day 17 — Cockatrice (detail). A cockatrice is a mythical beast, essentially a two-legged dragon or serpent-like creature with a rooster's head. It has the reputed ability to kill people by either looking at them—"the death-darting eye of Cockatrice"—touching them, or sometimes breathing on them. It was repeated in the late-medieval bestiaries that the weasel is the only animal that is immune to the glance of a cockatrice. 🎃 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #cockatrice #halloween

Inktober day 16 — Shellycoat (detail). The Scottish and Northern English folklore, a shellycoat is a type of spirit that haunts rivers and streams and is a type of bogle. The name comes from the coat of shells these creatures are said to wear, which rattle upon movement. Shellycoats are considered to be relatively harmless; they may mislead wanderers, particularly those they think are trespassing upon the creature's territory, but without malice. A common tactic of a shellycoat would be to cry out as if drowning and then laugh at the distracted victim. 🎃 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #shellycoat #rivermonster

Inktober day 15 — The Cat Sidhe (detail) is a fairy creature from Celtic mythology, said to resemble a large black cat with a white spot on its chest. Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. Other common folklore suggested that the Cat Sidhe was not a fairy, but a witch that could transform into a cat nine times. 🎃 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #catsith #caitsidhe #witch #witchcraft #fairy #halloween

Inktober day 14 — A hob (detail) is a type of small mythological household spirit found in the north and midlands of England, but especially on the Anglo-Scottish border, according to traditional folklore of those regions. They could live inside the house or outdoors. They are said to work in farmyards and thus could be helpful; however, if offended they could become nuisances. The usual way to dispose of a hob was to give them a set of new clothing, the receiving of which would make the creature leave forever. It could, however, be impossible to get rid of the worst hobs. 🎃 #fawnlorn #matthayton #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #hob #goblin #fairy #ghost

Ribbons or other offerings are sometimes left as gestures of acknowledgement and respect for the spirits of the land, and sometimes as prayers requesting general blessings or specific aid from those same spirits. 🍂 #england #stonecircle #longmegandherdaughters #wishingtree #fairytree

Inktober day 13 — Long Meg and Her Daughters (detail) is a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age stone circle in North West England. The most famous of the many legends that surround the stones is that they were once a coven of witches who were turned to stone by a wizard from Scotland. Legend states that if you walk round the circles and count the number of stones correctly, then put your ear to Long Meg, you will hear her whisper. The name itself is said to come from a local witch, Meg of Meldon, who was alive in the early 17th century. 🎃 #illustration #inktober #inktober2017 #folklore #longmegandherdaughters #witch #witchcraft #stonecircle #druid

Sunday adventures with Adam (@ajpritchett) to visit Long Meg and Her Daughters. A Bronze Age stone circle with some neat folklore attached to it. I’m drawing part of that folklore for today’s Inktober. 🍁 #illustration #fawnlorn #matthayton #outdoors #england #stonecircle #druid #witchcraft #longmegandherdaughters
