I...wrote something! It’s a bit personal and it’s been so long that I almost chickened out and kept it to myself, but, you know. *gestures wordlessly to link in profile*
‘I don’t think I’d ever before had a baby that shook me loose from my moorings like this. Not like this one has. I looked up one day and found myself down the river, not a soul in the water, halfway out to sea.’

For Dress-As-Your-Favourite-Book-Character day I told them they had to choose costumes we already had 🙈 IT WAS LITERALLY JUST HALLOWEEN, YOU GUYS. Forgive me, Pinterest gods, for I have sinned. (Can you guess the books?)

On Sunday we attempted to take a Christmas photo. Four goes with the self-timer - while we screeched ‘SMILE FOR A SWEETIE’ and ‘LOOK STRAIGHT AT THE SUN, IT’S FINE’ - before a woman came over to say we were spoiling someone’s wedding and could we vacate the premises.
We did get one that was ok. This was not it. (It will be captioned ‘Wedding Killer’ when I post it in December.)

Give me a meal you eat partly with your fingers and mop up with kitchen roll. Give me mess and flavour and sitting at a 45-degree angle afterwards because that’s the only way you can breathe. Give me children old enough to colour quietly and appreciatively for the whole of dinner. Oh yes, that one most of all.

He requested a toffee cake and Krispy Kreme waffles for his birthday breakfast (see my stories!), then went into work because there were things he couldn’t miss. Keeping it totally on-brand, as always. Happy birthday, my love ❤️

I have to tell you, when we thought about having a third, getting this men-in-suits-with-sleeping-babies scenario back was...part of that decision-making process.

Fri-yay. The sun is shining, and it’s t-minus two hours till we’re all home, getting on pyjamas and switching on the telly. I could not need it more (even if it’s Ninjago again).

SOME NOTES SO FAR FROM EXERCISING EVERY DAY:
- you ache everywhere. Every morning you moan that you’re coming down with a cold, until you remember you did yoga yesterday and pulled a sinus
- Netflix and chill is more like Netflix and asleep on the sofa by 9pm
- you are suddenly hyper aware of how many vegetables you’re eating; ARE YOU A HEALTH INDIVIDUAL NOW
- has that extra energy everyone talks about appeared yet
- lol no

Every day I get back into the car after taking them to class, feeling like I’ve been beaten with a stick, and cry because they’ve gone into school after yet another morning of tears and tantrums. Getting three ready in the morning isn’t getting much easier, and I’m badly organised and I shout and they waft around the house like dandelions on a breeze when they’re supposed to be getting their shoes on, and it. is. the. worst.
So I’m sitting over porridge, trying to make plans to fix it. Is it fixable? Will it only get better when I finally get my act together? WHEN WILL THAT BE? I dunno. What are your best get-everyone-out-without-a-breakdown life hacks?

Like any good British patriot, I’m squeamish about patriotism (and goodness knows the last couple of years haven’t covered us in hope or glory). But bless us for Bonfire Night: bless our doughty irrational stubbornness, clinging onto a fire and fireworks tradition that makes no modern sense in freezing November. Bless our muddy fields and woolly hats and woodsmoke on frosty air. Bless our unshowy community, standing together for a fireworks display, listening to Land of Hope and Glory and quietly saying ‘ooh’.

90 minutes ago we were walking home. Half an hour ago I was making a chilli. Fifteen minutes ago they were all screaming and sobbing at the tops of their lungs. Now it’s finally calm, I’m going to really push the boat out and treat myself to a square of cheese and a loo visit 🧀🚽🎉 #notatthesametime #youllbegladtohear

Q: what’s the difference between me and a Krispy Kreme doughnut?
A: nothing, we’re both slightly squashy and permanently glazed over 🍩
Have arrived at ‘vision snowing over every time I stand up’ levels of exhaustion, but we’ve done today’s errands - so we stopped here for a bit of fresh air, and now I’m hoping to avoid the judgemental eye of the laundry basket long enough to put the kettle on before pick-up. It’s the little things.

So that’s it for the holiday. Welcome to Sunday Evening Before A New Term, i.e. literally the only time I iron their school uniform instead of pleading with them to keep their jumpers on (they do not keep their jumpers on) and hide my shame (my shame is on full display every afternoon).
Are the rest of you ironing uniform?! Please tell me no.

We had plans today but we cancelled them. Tim’s worked crazy hours for weeks, and I’ve picked up the slack at home, and all I ever want to do on Saturdays is eat lazy breakfasts and spend time with each other. So today we are. *drops to-do list dramatically in the fire* *if we had a fire* *wish we did*

“That little TM after Ninjago. What does it mean? I’ll tell you: Tragic...Melvin.”
My open tabs are always a testament to his eclectic interests. At the moment:
‘venomous snake species found in UK’
‘how long has Queen Elizabeth been queen’;
‘full lyrics to My Boyfriend Gave Me An Apple’
‘what is cinnamon made of’

Look, ONE of us is going to have the perfect mustard jumper this autumn, and if it can’t be me, I guess it can be her.

I’ve never been very good at keeping old friends - the ones you don’t have to second-guess yourself around, the ones you can give an honest answer to when they ask how things are going (actual quote from me today: “buying baby headbands is all that’s keeping me in one piece, tbh”) - but I’ve held onto these. With both hands and all the muster I’ve got.

Sometimes it’s not the photo but the story behind it. Just after our last twenty-week scan - the one where I had so much difficulty believing that there were girl parts on the monitor that the scan technician sent us away with a photo of Imogen’s, ahem, underside - we came here, ate lunch in a cafe and bought a tiny autumn coloured dress. It was like a miraculous foreign object in our hands. I remember feeling wildly, incredulously happy. Today, almost a year later, I’m back here with Imogen, waiting for my car (🙄). And I just bought her another autumn dress in a rather larger size. Nice to be back. #freeupmyinsta #definitelynotshowingthatphototoherboyfriends

This isn’t the greatest photo, but I love it.
I love the shape of their heads the day after a haircut.
I love the fact that when I say ‘go and read’ they actually go and actually read and that Ted ducked out of Harry Potter this evening because he was “having some pers’nul reading time instead, Mummy”.
I love the fact that she’ll sit happily for ages if one of them sits next to her.
I love the fact that her roly-poly jelly legs barely fit into the slots of that bumbo.
