I’ve never been very good at keeping old friends - the ones you don’t have to second-guess yourself around, the ones you can give an honest answer to when they ask how things are going (actual quote from me today: “buying baby headbands is all that’s keeping me in one piece, tbh”) - but I’ve held onto these. With both hands and all the muster I’ve got.

Sometimes it’s not the photo but the story behind it. Just after our last twenty-week scan - the one where I had so much difficulty believing that there were girl parts on the monitor that the scan technician sent us away with a photo of Imogen’s, ahem, underside - we came here, ate lunch in a cafe and bought a tiny autumn coloured dress. It was like a miraculous foreign object in our hands. I remember feeling wildly, incredulously happy. Today, almost a year later, I’m back here with Imogen, waiting for my car (🙄). And I just bought her another autumn dress in a rather larger size. Nice to be back. #freeupmyinsta #definitelynotshowingthatphototoherboyfriends

This isn’t the greatest photo, but I love it.
I love the shape of their heads the day after a haircut.
I love the fact that when I say ‘go and read’ they actually go and actually read and that Ted ducked out of Harry Potter this evening because he was “having some pers’nul reading time instead, Mummy”.
I love the fact that she’ll sit happily for ages if one of them sits next to her.
I love the fact that her roly-poly jelly legs barely fit into the slots of that bumbo.

First monthly photo where she refused to lie down 😄 This month she learned to sleep, started aggressively laughing in faces when she wanted entertaining, and ate (and spat out) absolutely everything we could throw at her. Our most hilarious, omnivorous, demanding child. She’s a proper, face-aching delight.

Yesterday I stripped us to the skin after sick fountained out of her mouth and nose like something out of a horror film, and fell uncomfortably asleep on the floor by her cot.
This morning we thought we'd best get a change of scene.
(Am writing this on the floor by her cot. Peaks and troughs, guys. Peaks and troughs.)

Is there something in the air this month? I know lots of people feeling totally wrung out, and after four days of stomach problems and PMT, I am too. So yesterday I spent an extra fifteen minutes in the woods. Today I'm changing our sheets, then burrowing into them with the sad herbal tea that's all I can digest at the moment (my GOSH I want pizza), and watching something cheery. Have you started The Good Place yet? I adore it ❤️

First morning of the year where we drove to school with the headlights on. First accidental taste of heather. First face-plant into ferns. First damp and muddy bottom of many.

Started the boys' schoolwork boxes today. Only three years late, which is about the timescale for most of my projects. Do you ever feel like you're doing a frantic doggy paddle through life, and only succeeding in making a lot of noise and flipping the odd duck turd into your open mouth? 🦆💩👍
Hey baby. True to form she kicked off in the back carrier after an hour, and I carried her for the last mile. You can try any sort of wrestling move on her and she'll think it's brilliant (so, um, it would seem), but try and pee out of sight for longer than a minute and you'll break her heart. I thought she'd be gentler; I thought she'd be tougher; I never for a second thought she'd be this ruddy marvellous.

Good morning! There's a bright, beautiful sky out there, and we're seeing none of it: after Ted was struck down with what can euphemistically be described as 'geyser bowels' during our morning search for shoes and book bags, we'll be snuggling up with duvets and heavy-duty bleach. We think it was the garlic cheese he took a shine to this week. Boursin is a cruel, cruel mistress. 🧀🌋

Imogen vs. crepe. A mighty battle. (The crepe put up more of a fight than you'd imagine.)
Go to bed early • Read to them; read to me • Start something new • Run 6k again without dying or wishing for same • Watch good telly • Put the heating on • Show up for people • Go out in the woods as much as possible and feel the largeness of things •
October goals. I'm coming for ye. 🍁🍄🍂☔️
What would you like to do this month?

At one point one of them decided that they didn't like cheese on pizza (?!), and their pizza night stylings have only become more eclectic from there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #onionforeheadvampire #meatballH

Limping towards the weekend with a soggy Lamaze toy in one hand and a half-chewed cocktail sausage in the other 🙌
Happy Friday, everybody ❤️
Caught somewhere between 'Is. It. Only. Thursday' and 'How can it already be Thursday when I have achieved LITERALLY NOTHING this week?'

It's always five minutes from home when he 'hurts his leg weally bad'. The camera doesn't lie, Ted. #catthatgotthecream

For the uninitiated, halfway through the first half-term is when -
🍁your enthusiasm for returning forms on time has already dwindled to nothing;
🍁you realise how foolish it was to buy them only three shirts each rather than the SIX THAT WOULD OBVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN EASIER;
🍁the weather has settled comfortably into raining once at 9am and again at 3pm;
🍁you've put the heating on at least once and pretended you haven't (possibly to dry a school shirt you forgot about);
🍁and the wellies look like this.
