“Much of Rackham's work depicts gnomes, fairies, goblins or other creatures from mythology, folklore or fable. His work has been an inspiration to many, including film director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and modern illustrator Brian Froud. Beyond the fantastical natural world, Rackham also found inspiration in unusual places, creating his own artistic interpretations of pieces from music and theater, such as Wagner's operas, or Shakespeare plays.
.
Whether illustrating whimsical books for children or darker matter for adults, Rackham's imaginative, brilliant illustration style was highly sought after and enhanced any text it accompanied. Rackham died in 1939, and now, more than 70 years after his death, his work is collectible and beloved. Children and adults alike take pleasure in the unique, beautiful art he provided for some of the world's greatest stories.” -Beth Carswell

200 years ago #photography was being discovered and developed in labs across Europe. Hazardous materials such as potassium cyanide and time consuming #processes were being used by inventors, scientist, and artists to freeze time and #capture an image of the world. As the popularity of these pictures grew, so did the demand for efficiency and quality. Techniques for faster process times and clearer images quickly advanced and methods for making photographs such as these #tintypes #developed. Check out these examples of tintypes and other early photographic processes in @danielcooneyfineart online auction of Photographs and Prints closing tomorrow on iGavelAuctions.com

Catherine M. Wood was a painter of landscapes with figures, landscapes from Egypt, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, and still-lifes, one of which is lot # 4819659 closing Thursday, November 16th, 2017 on igavelauctions.com. She married the painter of architectural views and landscapes Richard Henry Wright in the 1890’s and would more often than not be referred to as the wife of Wright and not by name only, as the pictured detail of the back of the painting here shows. Throughout art history women have been considered by men to lack the abilities required to become artists, and social convention restricted women to the duties of the home. Their chances of attaining artist status were limited and male biographers largely ignored their life stories. Making works by female artists both rare and desirable. How thankful we are for the modern lens that cuts through the hegemony of the past. #womenartists #womeninart #larkmasonassociates #nineteenthcenturyart

"President Kennedy's back was broken during the war, when that torpedo boat of his was hit by the Japanese destroyer. As a result of that injury he wore a brace on his back most of his life. Quite a few people didn't realize that. Also he could never sit for any length of time, more than thirty or forty minutes in a chair without having to get up and walk around. Particularly when it felt bad he had a habit, in the House and Senate, and into his Presidency, of carrying his weight on his shoulders, literally, by leaning over a desk, putting down his palms out flat, and leaning over and carrying the weight of his upper body by his shoulder muscles, and sort of stretching or easing his back. He would read and work that way, which was something I had seen him do many times. When I saw him do that, I walked in, stood by his rocking chair, and then I looked down and framed him between the two windows, and I shot the picture." George Tames

This painting by Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921) at six feet in length is larger than any other offered for sale in over three years.

Born in Copenhagen, #Denmark he would become one of America’s best known and most celebrated #marine painters. He studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen before moving to the New York area in the 1870’s. Jacobsen left Europe at the time to avoid serving in the Franco-Prussian War. While in New York, the artist executed some six thousand portraits of ships in the city’s harbor and its surroundings between the mid-1870’s and the end of the World War I.
