Want to teach your pup to sit? Try this simple sequence: 1) hold a treat close to his nose and move backward slowly 2) Let his head follow as his rear end lowers 3) when he actually sits, share the treat and show affection 4) repeat with lots of praise, until your pup can manage without the need of treats.

Naming a new #puppy? His moniker might help make his training go more smoothly. Steer clear of names that sound like basic commands to avoid confusion, and keep in mind that hard consonants and long vowels are easier for dogs to hear and identify.

Does your dog remember being a puppy? Probably not. Dogs don’t have memories in the same way people do, but they do Imprint, which means they have strong associations with objects, people and even smells. They can’t fully understand these associations, but they feel them none-the-less.

Why do #cats cry? If you’ve ruled out any medical issues, consider the following possibilities for all the vocal commotion: 1) hunger 2) boredom 3) “MOAR attention please” 4) “Open that door and let me in!” Want more fun #petfacts? Sign up for the Petcentric newsletter via the link in our bio.

Problems with a new puppy biting? Try teaching with toys, and give him something safe to chomp on, or mimic a yelp by saying “OUCH” loudly and firmly, then immediately stop play. This mimics the way a dog yelps, and helps teach your pup when he’s crossed the line.

If you see your pet twitching in his sleep, chances are, he’s re-living day-to-day experiences and processing the things he has learned, though it’s fun to wonder if his imagination is taking over. What kind of world do you think your pet would dream of?

Some drool in dogs is healthy (especially in breeds that are prone to it), but excessive slobber can point to health issues. Keep an eye on your pup to see what’s normal. If things seem off, it may be time to check for dental issues, anxiety, heat stroke or even signs that your pup has eaten something poisonous. Want more great #dogtips? Contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t color blind. But they do only have two color receptors: yellow and blue, which means they can’t recognize the difference between objects based on color. Luckily, they have a keen sense of smell that helps them explore the world around them with olfactory receptors estimated to be up to 100 million times more sensitive than a human.
