Repost from @larkmasonassociates Closing tomorrow is a Louis XVI style Tiffany lyre form marble clock garniture, circa 1900. This form has an interesting history. “The Sèvres Royal Porcelain Factory began producing lyre clocks from about 1785 although the case shape dates much earlier when in 1724 Jacques Thuret supplied a clock with a carved gilt wood lyre-shaped case to the Académie Française. However, it was not until the later part of the century that such clocks became really fashionable, as one of a number of decorative caes inspired by antiquity.” - Richard Reddington Antiques

Paul Chaleff is a successful American potter. His works are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery techniques, particularly that of wood firing. In the 1970’s when most potters were using electric or gas-fueled kilns he became a leader in a resurgence of wood firing in America by being one of the first potters to use a Japanese style Anagama Kiln. By the 1980’s he became comfortable enough with the technique to create colossal sized pieces, which he is well know for. By the 2000’s some weighed as much as 5000-6000 pounds.

In 1989 Chaleff began to work with British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. This work relationship lasted over a decade, and they collaborated on close to 50 pieces. After they stopped collaborating, Chaleff wrote that he next, “broke away from the constraints of the vessel altogether and created sculpture that spoke of man’s effect upon nature. I employed deliberate imperfection and tectonic shifting of forces in large abstract clay forms some parts seemingly untreated and others more obviously man-induced.“ Both his pottery and sculptures are known for asymmetry, a rough textured surface and are often appreciated for creating beauty from imperfection.
With works in many major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Noguci Museum Paul Chaleff’s resume is impressive.

William Blake (1757-1827) will forever be known as the visionary artist who as both a painter and poet indulged himself in stretching the limits of his imagination. Very apparent when looking at this drawing attributed to Blake is the extent to which the artist was fascinated with the work of Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo in representing the human body with particular attention to male musculature. Notice the accuracy and perfection of movement with which the artist composed this line drawing. Such a work of art could not have been realized by anyone other than a master draftsman.
This “Male Figure” attributed to William Blake and other works on paper attributed to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Arthur Rackham, Jules Pascin, and Henry Fuseli, are available for bidding in our iGavel Interiors November/December Interiors Sale closing on 12/05/2017.

“Divan Japonais was one of the many café-concerts in late nineteenth-century Paris frequented by Toulouse-Lautrec. His poster advertising the nightspot features two of his favorite Montmartre stars, Yvette Guilbert and Jane Avril. Here, Avril is a spectator, not a performer, as she sits in the foreground with Édouard Dujardin, a dandyish writer and nightclub habitué. In the upper left corner, on stage, is the headless body of Guilbert, recognizable by her trademark long black gloves and gaunt physique.” - @metmuseum .
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec produced prints for #MoulinRouge and other nightspots, this print for sale now is from the original production period of 1892-1893. .
