Last Sunday, at the Open Streets festival in Cape Town my colleagues at @therealcityofcapetown and I set up a makeshift portrait studio at the Open Streets (a citizen-driven initiative working to change how people use, perceive and experience streets). The idea was to have a fun activity where an artist would draw whatever the person wanted to be photographed with, adding to the backdrop as the day goes on.
This is my favourite little sequence from the day. It shows the process of the girl consulting with Colijn to posing proudly with the finished product.

FLOWER GIRLS: Girls in fairy dresses 9 September 2017 clutch onto flower petal baskets as they wait outside their aunt’s room before her wedding ceremony.
Zimbabwe court banned child marriage after challenge by former child brides. The court ruled that as of 20 January 2016, no one in Zimbabwe may enter into any marriage, including customary law unions, before the age of 18, and struck down a section of the Marriage Act which allowed girls to marry at 16 but boys at 18.
Formerly disadvantaged, the law will allow more girls to reach their potential as no person, girl or boy should be married before the age of 18.

Untitled: In remembrance of the International Day of Girl Child tomorrow on 11 October, here's a picture from ongoing work; it's of a young girl at Sipepa Primary School in Tsholotsho, a rural district in northwestern Zimbabwe where earlier this year floods destroyed the local school and displaced over 1,000 people in that area alone. Most of the kids this girl had to be transferred to this school while the old school was shutdown. Although families have been relocated to a new area, most of the displaced primary pupils have stayed at this school and learn in tents (pictured in the boxes) while construction of additional classroom blocks is ongoing. Hopefully all will be complete before this season's rains intensify in this flood-prone area. 📷 & © @i_amten, Tendai Marima from @everydayzimbabwe.
