Even better now with the cricket chorus as background music.

Apple pie tonight for a few special reasons. Hubby returns home from a four day trip away, our older boys had two major final exams today and the little one had his first day back to school in a week. And I had the kitchen to myself for quiet time and baking contemplation. Not to mention the snow is quickly melting, the windows are open, I hear birds singing outside and the temp is near 70. What a January day!

The worst of the storm has passed! Sunshine, blue sky and a snow-laden wonderland gleam through every window. The roads aren’t plowed and temps will be plunging overnight. 🌬This will be with us for a few more days.
School is called off tomorrow and because of our power outages they have no “digital school” either. Celebrations all around for this extended Christmas Vacation (and the return of power and heat)! #itsstillchristmas #gentlejanuary2018 #bombcyclone2018❄️

Tonight’s sunset was so breathtaking I had to capture it right through the windshield while driving home. My favorite was having to maneuver around a car parked in the middle of the road while the driver took a photo outside her car. 📷 I love encountering kindred spirits who are not afraid to stop and capture the awesome beauty of everyday life!

Backyard Ice Bowl day two. Fifth day of Christmas with absolutely no obligations (except fun) on the family calendar. We’ve never had a more relaxing break and even though we miss our far-flung family we are making forever memories at home. This Christmas is already one of my favorites.
Since Christmas Day we finally made sugar cookies, Ryan and I watched the entire Godless series on Netflix, we’ve played many rounds of Say Anything, and we’ve invited friends over to hang out. We have left the house for Sushi lunch and I even snuck in a massage because the house can be very noisy these days and mama is an introvert.😅

Every month I write a new message on our kitchen chalkboard. (It’s next to the pantry door so I know the boys must see it about 25 times a day.) I’m no expert at chalk drawings but that doesn’t bother me. 😉
This particular quotation has been a touchstone for me this Advent. When it gets crazy out there I strive to make our home a refuge of peace. I try to simplify our meals, play quiet Christmas music and light the candles and twinkle lights by 5:00pm. There’s still plenty to stress about : tests, shopping, shipping, school programs etc. but somehow early nightfall and some Christmas vibes help us to let it all go until tomorrow.
It will get done. It always does. And when I feel too overwhelmed I remember Christmas doesn’t really begin until the 25th. There are still 12 days after that for baking cookies, exchanging gifts with friends and watching Rudolph. I’m not going to rush it this year. I’m going to prepare now and celebrate all the way to New Year’s!🎉 #decemberreflections2017 #rockyourhappy #slowchristmas #AdventuresinAdvent

:: best decision of 2017 :: I think this #bestnine2017 collage reflects my approach to the last year which was to cultivate quiet and solitude in my days. I knew I needed to disconnect from the noisy world in order to find my own center of balance again.
That meant fewer obligations (and invitations) to take me outside the home, more time for coffee and writing, prayer and contemplation, walking and enjoying being outdoors, staying on top of making good meals for my family and tending to the mundane chores of homekeeping.
It has been so healing for my mind, body and spirit. My home is cleaner and more organized than it has ever been. I can think clearly because my environment is organized and running more efficiently. I am loving trying new recipes as well as the old favorites we are making more often. We have eaten more meals around the table as a family in this one year than perhaps all our family years combined. Our family ties feel stronger and more joyful than ever as a result. These are such good outcomes.
Yet, there are real consequences for choosing solitude and quiet in a busy world. There can be a subtle loneliness to the days, a struggle with the boredom of continuing to do all the necessary routines, and the loss of sisterly companionship with the lack of female face-to-face friendships.
Still, this has been the better path for an introverted mother during what feels like the busiest season of my boys’ lives. But maybe 2018 will be a year for carefully adding back in a few outwardly focused activities. Just not too many. 😉

These little Soft Toffee Bars are an easy way to include some chocolate on the cookie tray and are a Christmas tradition in our house. I make them ahead and freeze them but they are hard to resist when they are still warm. 😋 What are you baking?

Each ornament unwrapped holds a memory : this one was on great-grandma’s tree, that one was for the year we got married and this one was the year you were born...
Each son has received a new ornament of his own from us every year. Knowing many of these ornaments will move out with their owners and be unwrapped in their own homes someday I also buy one new ornament for me and my husband to commemorate each year.
In a house full of boys I love the chance to buy the glitteriest, sparkliest, loveliest ornaments I can find. 😄✨🎄

:: best day of 2017 :: Thanksgiving was so special this year at our house. My sister and brother-in-law came from Charlotte and my cousin and her family came from Phoenix to celebrate our first “kids without adults” holiday together. We’re nearing 50 but still feel like we belong at the kiddy table together. Now two of my boys no longer sit at the kiddy table! ☺️ We made so many memories and tears were shed upon waving goodbye. My side of the family is small but the love is big. ❤️ #decemberreflections2017

A side benefit of having boys who don’t drive quite yet is that while they are out with friends we sometimes make it a date night for us before we return to pick them up. On this first truly chilly night of fall we had time to wander downtown Norfolk, capture the sunset and snack at several different restaurants buzzing with nightlife. Not a normal Saturday night for us but so much fun. Then we get to hear about their evening all the way home which is a second side benefit. This won’t last much longer. We’ll have a driver in May. 😬#datenight

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.
Fall Leaves Fall by Emily Brontë
All fall my son has been working on a huge poetry project for school. Hearing about the various poems and poets he is studying has reignited my own secret love of poetry. I used to scribble poems into notebooks in junior high, then thoroughly enjoyed my poetry classes in college but during my busy mothering years I rarely read more than children’s poems. Now I’m going to add a volume of poetry when I create my mother’s morning basket. There’s something so satisfying about reading a few short lines here and there that may stay with me throughout the day.
If you haven’t heard of a mother’s morning basket you must listen to episode 40 of Pam Barnhill’s Your Morning Basket podcast featuring @jenmackintosh. It’s a way to prioritize and enrich your reading time and it’s so simple to create.

Having the monthly/weekly insert will be a game changer for my personal carry next year. Can’t wait to use it! Sharing for all you TN lovers out there so you can go get yours before they’re gone. ☺️ ✏️ 📚💞

Found a new floral mug for my afternoon tea today. I thought I was strictly a coffee girl but lately I am craving Numi Moroccan Mint in my cup. Thanks to @abowlfulloflemons for turning me onto that yummy tea. And you really should follow her for her IG stories. She shares so many crockpot recipes which are right up my dinnertime alley these days.
Also, I found some cute Christmas washi tape at Michaels which I am using to decorate my Christmas TN. I’ve started buying some presents and need to stay on top of tracking them. I’m determined to be done shopping early this year so I can do some cozy things with my family in the heart of December.

ZBB words of wisdom. ☺️
What a great way to celebrate my 45th Birthday last night with my family at this outdoor concert. This band has been the soundtrack for every cross-country road trip since they were small and we all sing along like long lost back-up singers.
It was a late night out and my nine year old’s first concert. Of course I woke up this morning and panicked (freaked out) that we had only ten minutes to get out the door for school. As I was shaking my son awake he cracked an eye and said we don’t have school today mom! I guess I’m already showing my age. 😆 #zacbrownband #birthdaygirl #familymemories

I believe these words so deeply. Research shows too that regular family meals benefit children in specific positive ways. My heart has known this and my soul has yearned for this since our first of three sons was born.

Yet one of the hardest aspects of raising our three athletic boys (and having a traveling husband gone many days a week) has been the utter impossibility of gathering everyone around the table at the same time. Sometimes it has felt as though the very goal of sports, extra-curriculars and work has been to intentionally prevent family time together at home. It has been a constant ache in my chest to rarely have the opportunity to light the candles I always keep at the ready on our kitchen table.

Then, suddenly, our boys began to let go of certain activities. First, Kai quit club soccer. Three evenings and entire Saturdays opened up on the calendar. Then Zach left travel soccer in 8th grade in favor of playing only the fall season on the high school JV team. Whole months of weeknights and weekends at home flooded the calendar for him. And now our oldest is taking a break from his favorite sport. A whole calendar year of freedom is the result. They had joined on their own and now we are letting go together. It feels counter-cultural.

Don’t get me wrong, there is still Cross Country, school basketball teams, track, and the older boys will try high school LaCrosse in the Spring. Not to mention a few clubs and their mandatory volunteering.

But for now, for the first time, we are enjoying the miracle of many family meals around the table each week, complete with the candles flickering, daily run-downs, the occasional argument, and deliciously good food for body, mind and soul. I have felt the shift in our family culture thanks to sharing meals at the table. I have felt a small anxiety in my heart fall away in relief. 🍽

That’s why I’m so excited for Sally Clarkson’s new book, The Lifegiving Table, which releases on Tuesday. I ordered my copy yesterday. I want to be affirmed in my belief of this table truth, and she has included recipes as well which gets me every time.
