The Grotta Azzurra. Until 1826, locals believed that it was occupied by monsters 👹

“Perhaps they were onto something,” writes Meadhbh McNutt. “After the German poet August Kopisch rediscovered the cave, its glowing blue waters proved a blessing and a curse, attracting tourists by the boatful.”⠀

“Visitors in the early part of the 20th century arrived with expectations borrowed from Suetonius’s scandalous account of Tiberius’s imperial resort, republished in 1913. The Roman emperor allegedly turned Homer’s mythical cave of nymphs into a reality, ‘devising little nooks of lechery in the woods and glades of the island, and had boys and girls dressed up as Pans and nymphs posted in front of caverns or grottoes’”.⠀

A stone Emperor Augustus at the peak of Monte Solaro on the island of Capri 🤴⠀

“The views of the coast amaze and dwarf me,“ writes Meadhbh McNutt. ⠀

“I float above allotments and fragrant freesias. All is silent but for the rhythm of a man chopping wood beneath my dangling feet. Tourists pass by in leather sandals, clutching nautical Capri bags. One man in a sailor hat struggles to fit Mount Vesuvius into his selfie. At the peak, a stone Emperor Augustus extends his arm towards magnificent views of the faraglioni or sea-stack formations, and distant mainland. Speedboats carve white lines into the water, while the cliffs remain unmoved and menacing. I try to imagine a time when the island was a fortress of myths – sailors petrified of the Grotta Azzurra and the ancient Greek Serienes. Before the medieval shift towards mermaid figures, sirens were rooster-like creatures (nothing more bewitching than a singing rooster).”⠀

Grinder the grizzly bear (yes, really) who lives in a sanctuary at the peak of Grouse Mountain near Vancouver 🐻⠀

“The bears were adopted by the mountain’s Refuge for Endangered Wildlife in 2001 after their parents died. Despite it being July, there was a large mound of snow by the enclosure. One of the bears paddled towards us and yawned... A mountain ranger began speaking through a portable microphone and speaker, and I snickered every time he said the words “Grinder” and “bear” in succession,“ writes @philipmaughan.⠀

“The first thing that strikes you while walking around downtown Vancouver is the injuries: casts, crutches, wrist and ankle braces,” writes @philipmaughan.⠀

“Vancouverites wear their physical misfortunes like others wear Rolexes and Gucci sunglasses, and the reason why is plain to see. Although the western side of downtown is a latticework of concrete, glass and steel, unique only in its ability to mimic other middleweight financial centres around the world, the rolling beaches, skater-friendly Seawall and lush, expansive parks that surround it are something altogether different.”⠀

Flowers outside a travel agent in Chinatown 💐 Vancouver’s Chinatown is a cultural hub for the whole city, featuring studios, galleries, music spots, as well as non-Asian commercial outlets, boutiques and hip restaurants, no longer just “a Chinatown”.⠀

“To marry in Las Vegas is no longer about mimesis, the imitation of a ritual,” writes Lili Owen Rowlands, ”rather, it is in itself a particular version of “proper” marriage to which many aspire.”

“It seems to me that many of those who marry – in 2016, some 81,325 couples requested a Clark County licence in order to do so – travel to Las Vegas to imitate the impulsive gesture of a shotgun wedding, to eschew pomp and expense, to afford the semblance of risk to a tradition in decline.”⠀
