A side benefit of having boys who don’t drive quite yet is that while they are out with friends we sometimes make it a date night for us before we return to pick them up. On this first truly chilly night of fall we had time to wander downtown Norfolk, capture the sunset and snack at several different restaurants buzzing with nightlife. Not a normal Saturday night for us but so much fun. Then we get to hear about their evening all the way home which is a second side benefit. This won’t last much longer. We’ll have a driver in May. 😬#datenight

5 Mayfair
Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.
Fall Leaves Fall by Emily Brontë
All fall my son has been working on a huge poetry project for school. Hearing about the various poems and poets he is studying has reignited my own secret love of poetry. I used to scribble poems into notebooks in junior high, then thoroughly enjoyed my poetry classes in college but during my busy mothering years I rarely read more than children’s poems. Now I’m going to add a volume of poetry when I create my mother’s morning basket. There’s something so satisfying about reading a few short lines here and there that may stay with me throughout the day.
If you haven’t heard of a mother’s morning basket you must listen to episode 40 of Pam Barnhill’s Your Morning Basket podcast featuring @jenmackintosh. It’s a way to prioritize and enrich your reading time and it’s so simple to create.

Teatime and roses. The sun is warm but the breeze has chilled. Better enjoy these pink petals while I can.

Target does it again! Look at this adorable TN set for only $19.00. Comes with two inserts that divide 2018 in half. There were three other designs and extra inserts available. Having the monthly/weekly insert will be a game changer for my personal carry next year. Can’t wait to use it! Sharing for all you TN lovers out there so you can go get yours before they’re gone. ☺️ ✏️ 📚💞

Found a new floral mug for my afternoon tea today. I thought I was strictly a coffee girl but lately I am craving Numi Moroccan Mint in my cup. Thanks to @abowlfulloflemons for turning me onto that yummy tea. And you really should follow her for her IG stories. She shares so many crockpot recipes which are right up my dinnertime alley these days.
Also, I found some cute Christmas washi tape at Michaels which I am using to decorate my Christmas TN. I’ve started buying some presents and need to stay on top of tracking them. I’m determined to be done shopping early this year so I can do some cozy things with my family in the heart of December.

ZBB words of wisdom. ☺️
What a great way to celebrate my 45th Birthday last night with my family at this outdoor concert. This band has been the soundtrack for every cross-country road trip since they were small and we all sing along like long lost back-up singers.
It was a late night out and my nine year old’s first concert. Of course I woke up this morning and panicked (freaked out) that we had only ten minutes to get out the door for school. As I was shaking my son awake he cracked an eye and said we don’t have school today mom! I guess I’m already showing my age. 😆 #zacbrownband #birthdaygirl #familymemories

I believe these words so deeply. Research shows too that regular family meals benefit children in specific positive ways. My heart has known this and my soul has yearned for this since our first of three sons was born.

Yet one of the hardest aspects of raising our three athletic boys (and having a traveling husband gone many days a week) has been the utter impossibility of gathering everyone around the table at the same time. Sometimes it has felt as though the very goal of sports, extra-curriculars and work has been to intentionally prevent family time together at home. It has been a constant ache in my chest to rarely have the opportunity to light the candles I always keep at the ready on our kitchen table.

Then, suddenly, our boys began to let go of certain activities. First, Kai quit club soccer. Three evenings and entire Saturdays opened up on the calendar. Then Zach left travel soccer in 8th grade in favor of playing only the fall season on the high school JV team. Whole months of weeknights and weekends at home flooded the calendar for him. And now our oldest is taking a break from his favorite sport. A whole calendar year of freedom is the result. They had joined on their own and now we are letting go together. It feels counter-cultural.

Don’t get me wrong, there is still Cross Country, school basketball teams, track, and the older boys will try high school LaCrosse in the Spring. Not to mention a few clubs and their mandatory volunteering.

But for now, for the first time, we are enjoying the miracle of many family meals around the table each week, complete with the candles flickering, daily run-downs, the occasional argument, and deliciously good food for body, mind and soul. I have felt the shift in our family culture thanks to sharing meals at the table. I have felt a small anxiety in my heart fall away in relief. 🍽

That’s why I’m so excited for Sally Clarkson’s new book, The Lifegiving Table, which releases on Tuesday. I ordered my copy yesterday. I want to be affirmed in my belief of this table truth, and she has included recipes as well which gets me every time.

Savoring the last morning of September with hot coffee and a thoughtful book on the deck. The boys are playing football in the background and the air has its first true chill.
What you don’t see are the tears when someone stubs his toes, the bickering over illegal moves, the frustration that one of these boys has to mow the lawn today before he gets to go have fun.
All those things happen behind the scenes and we take deep breaths and sip coffee in between. And we make up and get along again. This is the kind of Saturday that feels just like Home.

Even though I don’t yet have a high school senior (only a freshman and a sophomore), these high school days have heightened my awareness of our now fleeting family of five moments. Every dinner around our table, every drive to school with each one present creates an echo in my heart that soon we will be four, then three, then two. I have an intense desire to soak it all up, to listen with my full attention, to put down whatever I am doing and take up the family thread instead.
It’s #nationalpoetryday and this poem by my favorite contemporary poet, Sharon Olds, came to mind as I sent my boys off to school this morning. Do you have a favorite poem or poet? I’d love to hear.📖📝📚

These three in my lap pretty much sums up where my head is today. Maria is blustering by outside and all I want to do is drink tea and dream of the holiday season. Oh and make lots and lots of lists!
My in-laws are coming for Halloween, my cousin and sister’s families for Thanksgiving, so I have lots of cooking, baking and decorating to look forward to in the weeks ahead.
And I confess I have been playing my Beegie Adair Holiday station on Pandora already. It’s so peaceful! 🎄
Christmas is our family favorite and every year I fantasize that I will be “ready early” in all the material ways so that I can enjoy December and spend it preparing in all the spiritual ways. Maybe this little book will encourage me to prepare in advance?
Who’s with me in feeling the holiday(s) spirit?

I’ve noticed that I’ve been seeking quiet more than usual lately. Tending to my home, my family and my health takes all my focus and energy anyway. 🍃
So I go about my day in peace and continually aim to be unoffendable. This feels like the highest spiritual path right now. 🍂
In return, I have time to hear the skittering of fallen leaves across the WalMart parking lot or to study the changing colors in the trees at school pick up. 🍁
And I love to follow all you peace-seekers going about your daily lives here on IG. Thanks for sharing your little piece of quiet with me.

Who would have thought that adult friendship break-ups could be even more painful than those memorable middle school friendship messes we've all made? Perhaps, it's that it takes longer to trust as an adult and when trust is broken, it is that much more scarring. But as @lisajobaker shared this weekend, it is better to have a friendship scar than an open wound.

The time I spent with the women who gathered in Lisa's home church at her #neverunfriended live event felt like the right place to stitch up those wounds and leave the pain of them at the foot of the cross once and for all. It was so freeing and healing.

Yet, I realized I wouldn't trade my scars because they are proof of the lessons I have learned about how much and, more precisely, whom to trust. As Lisa wrote in her book, "Drawing safe boundary lines doesn't make you selfish, unChristian, or impolite; it makes you wise." I guess wisdom does really come with age and experience and most especially, through suffering.

Friends, Lisa Jo is the real real deal. We all left wanting to be her best friend! But the truth is that there are already women who are the real deal in our lives and perhaps we haven't taken the opportunity to build a safe and lasting friendship with someone we know in our own home churches or neighborhoods. I left feeling one step closer to being open to friendship again. That, girls, is a very big step for this semi-guarded, lately wounded, introvert. I'm excited.

So if you haven't read Never Unfriended, I recommend it whole-heartedly. And when in doubt, believe the best and give lots of grace. 💗

It was the highlight of our weekend in D.C. to be at early morning mass in the Crypt Church beneath the National Basilica this morning. Every single corner of this place holds a tiny prayer chapel of exquisite beauty and reverence. Plus the ceilings sparkle like the starry night sky. A must see for visitors of any faith.
Also, in addition to the prayers we are all offering for the hurricane victims, could you please say a prayer for my mother who is having a major surgery tomorrow? Thanks so much friends. ✨🙏🏻✨
