Last week was a little too early for most of the leaves around the lake to have changed, but we found this small batch of Japanese maples that were seemingly on fire.

The best place to be in autumn is on a street lined with ginkgo trees.

The girl of about eight, dressed in an eye-catching red kimono, circled the grounds of the shrine as she waited for her parents and sister. It was impossible to keep one’s eyes off the bright colors of the girl’s outfit as she moved, especially in contrast to the darkness of the moist stones.

To me, the phrase “The North” can sometimes mean jumping face-first into a giant mound of snow. What does it mean to you?

Share your interpretations of The North in a photo contest being held by FilmNorth and judged by me. There’s one week left to enter for cash prizes, as well as opportunities to have your work displayed at a gallery show in January. Follow the link in my bio for more info.

My first visit to Japan in the fall has not been disappointing. Hikawa Valley, Okutama.

I intended to post this in a carousel with the previous post, but everything but the first image still gets crudely cropped for you. 😕

Do you think they bought the bucket and broom to match the house?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled around a number of different parts of Japan over the years, but next week, I’ll be returning to Japan to see the fall colors in the mountains for the first time. Join me (and @moonlightice) next Saturday, November 11th in Okutama, just a short 90-minute train ride from metropolitan Tokyo. For more information, visit

I was asked to reflect on my life and tell a bit of my story as part of the #BridgingtheGap campaign, which pairs female millennial and midlife influencers, encouraging them to share with, learn from, and inspire one another. To read more about my life than I normally share with folks, follow the link in my profile to read what the lovely @catherinegraceo has written, and read some of the other incredible stories out there, especially Catherine's own. #wearestrongertogether #ageisjustanumber

Happiest of birthdays to this handsome devil of a man who makes me laugh even when I think I don’t want to, has infinite patience for my extremely slow way of living life, and takes care of me, our home, and our family when I’m not able to. I love you so much.

Photo taken by @dianarothery on our City Hall wedding day.

I'm judging a photo contest, themed "The North," and invite you to share with me what you think of when you think of when you hear those words. I hate to say it, but "The North" is more than Jon Snow, Winterfell, and the White Walkers. For me, those words evoke not just thoughts of the lakes of ice, bitter cold, and hushed snowfall of winter, but also the feeling of being enveloped by a cocoon of heat on a hot summer day, miles of lush green fields, and larger-than-life cloud cover during a summer storm. What comes to your mind?

Submissions for FilmNorth's Mobile Photography Competition "The North" are being accepted from now until November 13th. I will select 30 of the submissions to be displayed at FilmNorth’s Marsden/Gustafson Gallery in Minneapolis, MN in January 2018. I'll also be there for opening night! More details can be found through the link in my profile and at
I’m still in awe of the amazing artists from @jacobjonasthecompany and @spectrum_dance_theater and love the images from our #camerasanddancers shoot a few weeks ago. Read the story and see more images shot with the new L16 camera from @light by following the link in my profile. #capturedbylight #LightL16

More of the Venice not normally photographed. A lull between water taxis at the stop for the city’s most popular sight, Piazza San Marco.
