People coming in for the No Veteran Left Behind celebration in Kenosha. The program is dedicated to Gander and other working dogs. Two songs written especially for Gander feature G and are sung by local school choirs. I think it’s gonna be a tearful event.

Yes, they make sleeping bags for dogs.
G’s came today.
Temps headed in the teens on the lake tonight, so this came just in time.

So, a promise is a promise. I took G fishing for about 30 minutes.
He is never troublesome. He just chases after and sometimes swims along. Today, one was exhausted. G tried to create a current to revive him by and then nosed him downstream. The fish revived. But because the fish are spawning it’s unlikely he’ll last very long

Powerful meeting this morning. And lots of synchronicity.
I just listen to the NBC news report about our fetch 22 Taps ceremonies and heard the name Daniel Nerstrom read by me twice during the segment.
In front of me at the grocery store with his mother. She is a wonderful lady and Gander immediately went to her to lay down beside her...
I introduced myself and we had a long talk about Daniel and the events preceding and following his suicide.
Just prior to his death he had been refused treatment at the North Chicago VA. He had Trumatic brain injury and resulting migraines. He was refused treatment at the VA emergency room. The pain was so bad he was vomiting. He ended his suffering shortly there after and VA refused to release any medical records to the mother, even after his death, unless she obtained a court order.
Daniel was missing for several months because snow had covered his body. He died December 1st but was not found until the Spring.
Daniel’s name is permanently on our nightly list of 22 Names.
Taps tonight will be solely in his honor.
His mother below shows the picture of him she takes to work with her every day.

Please read and share if so inclined.
We have made the decision that during our travels we need to be able extend more of a helping hand to people along the way. And especially to homeless veterans we have encountered.
Over the years we’ve assisted many who have fallen through the cracks of the veterans administration. We provided interim housing, food, clothes... until they could get needed treatment.
In only one place we frequent in Colorado there are at least 30 homeless veterans living along a river bank.
We have a extraordinary medical kit, emergency survival kit and more in the camper. We’re missing a few things we’d like to have like a defibrillator, but that will come.
We would like to carry several new or lightly used coats, sleeping bags, blankets, gloves, socks, hats and toiletries.
If we begin this process in the next week, how many of you would be willing to help us collect needed supplies?

Meeting with Christa Velbel.
She is part of the VALOR program that trains veterans to train dogs that are court adjudicated or removed from home is because they’ve been in fighting ring store other untenable circumstances. VALOR makes the dogs more adoptable. They’ve saved countless lives in Chicago and helped the veterans re-integrate from homelessness and medical treatment at the same time

The VALOR program graduates get one of our challenge coins and a copy of our book as a graduation present. And we usually go to talk to each cycle of trainees.

Nine of them graduate on Monday. Those of you who have donated “pay it forward“ books and coins take a close look. This is what you help facilitate. We will post pictures of the graduation next week.

8 Inkwell
Been a rough afternoon.
Worn out by the Gold Star commentaries.
I keep seeing that telegram: “We regret to inform you...” No calls, no letters. Just a Western Union deliveryman. Short bursts of words.
The rest of you grows old. That day, if it comes for you, keeps you a boy for life.
My mother covered her ears when Taps was played. Her worst fear was realized and she slowly retreated into the safety of dementia.
Taps is for her tonight And every gold star family for whom the day is never done.

Meeting with state representative Lou Lang, Sandy Champion and George Gandara...
Talking about putting together a bill to criminalize counterfeit service dogs as well as develop a voluntary registration program for legitimate service dog teams
Incredibly productive meeting with Lou who is one of the great forces for veterans and all things good in the legislature
