The "almond-shaped" emblem on Guam's flag is meant to recall the slingshot stones used by the island's ancestors. The flag was adopted in 1948, and Guam became a US territory in 1950.

North Dakota’s badge focuses on the sun and 13 stars featured on its flag. I like that the sun shape is also part of its neighbor to the south's flag, and brother in the former Dakota territory.

Okay, I think this is my 5th attempt at Wisconsin. I decided to go with something that reflected its moniker as "the badger state," but kept the flag colors.

Washington DC's flag is based on George Washington's coat of arms. DC was without an official flag for over a century, but finally adopted a design from graphic designer Charles A. R. Dunn in 1938.

Maryland has one of the most distinct and artsy looking flags out there. It bears the family crests of the Calvert and Crossland families, of Cecil Calvert, who founded Maryland as an English colony in 1634.

The flag of Puerto Rico was officially adopted in 1952 when it became a Commonwealth. Prior to that it was used to advocate independence for Puerto Rico and Cuba from Spain. It's design is the same as the Cuban flag with the colors reversed.

For New York, I used the colors from the flag and coat of arms as a backdrop for a graphic of Lady Liberty. #newyork #badges #badgedesign #graphicdesign

Rhode Island's gold anchor symbolizes hope. The thirteen stars are for the original thirteen colonies, and Rhode Island's status as the 13th state to ratify the constitution. #rhodeisland #badges #badgedesign #graphicdesign

Nevada 2.1. I decided to go heavier on the retro Vegas style, but keep the original flag color as the backdrop. #nevada #badges #badgedesign #graphicdesign

Another 2.0 makeover. Montana is such a beautiful state, I decided to use the elements from the flag to make a more scenic badge.

Minnesota 2.0. The previous version seemed too generic. This version uses the same colors and stars, but the darker blue represents water (10,000 lakes) reflecting the stars above.

Iowa's flag features an eagle against red, white and blue vertical stripes. I thought a close up of an eagle head would be distinctive on this one.
