I am working on a new series of paintings in black and white tones. I’ve been exploring themes of chaos and calm and the place in space and time where they meet, and I have been experimenting with different instruments for painting, different textures and different mediums. I’m taking inspiration from a few black and white images of nature from my own archives and a few newer works that I shot this summer here in the lower Hudson Valley where I live and work and on my trip to Greece. This is fairly new for me since I tend to be drawn to colors in my painting work but it’s no question that black and white photography is at the root of all of my artistic endeavors. I’m having a lot of fun with it but it’s also been a big challenge which obviously I love and I’m really drawn to. Sometimes I make things more difficult than they have to be and as I get older I’m learning that that’s not always such a bad thing. Happy Monday! 🖤#monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanstudio #artflowsessions

Inside the studio is where the magic and creativity happens. Outside is where I open up my heart and share it with the world. It’s a daily challenge for me to show this work and to be vulnerable but that’s how the growth happens so here you go. Happy weekend⚡️💫

I’m going to miss this one (and her sister) when I deliver it to my client’s house in a couple of weeks. Watch me paint it in my stories. 👩🏻‍🎨🤩

Just a small, colorful corner of my studio to brighten up an otherwise gray Hudson Valley day.

Current mood. Nothing is black and white....except my recent body of work. This piece is called "Daydream Tonight" and it's the first in a new series of oil paintings. 16x20 canvas ⚫️⚪️ #happymonday #monicashulmanstudio

I shot this street portrait in 2008 in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. I was there visiting my grandmother and showing work at an art fair. One morning before I went to the exhibit I went for a walk with my camera like I did almost daily back home when I was living in Manhattan. It was a meditative, therapeutic process for me to walk the streets and take photos of everything from my feet on the sidewalk to shadows to people like this man having a smoke on his front stoop. Like so many happy accidents this photo chose me because I was in the right place at the right time. I looked up, we looked at each other, I raised my camera, he nodded and I focused and clicked. The photo later went on to be published in Popular Photography and has easily become one of my favorite images. I'm going to start sharing more from my archives on here. I think it's a good exercise for me to see the evolution of my work and process and also it's inspiring me to get back out there and do what I always loved to do. I also love getting and answering questions so please don't hesitate to DM me or ask in the comments. Stay inspired and keep going and growing, friends. Happy Friday! ⚫️⚪️📷#monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanarchives #monicashulmanstudio #streetphotography #blackandwhiteonly

Thinking of themes of chaos vs calm, working with texture, easy flow and heavy paint. Leaving the color zone and exploring black and white tones and shades. Out of my comfort zone so I can grow with lack of color and a different medium. ⚫️⚪️ #monicashulmanstudio #artflowsessions #blackandwhiteonly #monicashulmanphotostories

My brain on art. Always creating. Always making. Constantly searching for inspiration and finding it in unexpected places. See the details of my just completed studio door on my stories. #monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanstudio #makeart #beart #liveart #artflowsessions

I picked up my first brush to make a painting when I was about 12 years old in an art studio where I would eventually spend up to 6 hours a week painting and creating. We worked with oils and the day leading up to my class I would get so excited hoping that the paint had dried enough to begin working on my next layer. In the last few years I've mostly been working with acrylics but recently I started thinking about oils again and I decided to go back to it for my work in a workshop that I'm currently taking. In my daily life I always feel so rushed for time and I tend to be super impatient. I'm the kind of person that if I don't slow down and catch myself I find myself thinking of whatever is next before I even finish what I'm doing. It's exhausting and not fair to me and to the people in my life and the never-ending tasks on my to-do list. When I work, particularly with oils, I find that my least favorite trait about myself (said obnoxious impatience) is almost completely absent. I'm only thinking of the thing right in front of me. Painting with oils again has inspired me to take time and be patient in all areas of my life. Acrylics dry almost immediately and so I have more flexibility in one sitting to layer and layer and layer. The process is a bit more nuanced for me personally while working with oils bc I have to give it more time to dry and there's nothing I can do about it. A piece might end up taking me just as long no matter what medium I'm working in but my thought process is different. It's been a good personal exercise and experiment and I've even surprised myself at how patient and not "annoyed" I can be. Who knew? 💫🙏🏼🙋🏻#monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanstudio #thisis40 #stilllearning #makersmovement #makeart #designsponge #sodomino #letspaint #artflowsessions #instudio

Get happy! The weekend is here! I've been cleaning up my computer and hard drives like I do every November and going through personal photos that fell into the digital abyss since I was lucky enough to be pretty busy with work the last several months. It's been one of those up and down years and with all the lows (the terribly low lows) of current events I have to say that there have been so many personal highs that are inspiring me to keep at it, keep going, keeping fighting, keep dreaming. So basically I'm trying to believe things by having the conversation I have constantly with my kids with myself. Have a wonderful weekend, friends! 💕💫✨#iloverunonsentences #childhoodunplugged #monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanstudio #letthembelittle #notiphone
My kids are my happy place. This little guy looks so grown up in this photo that it breaks my heart and inspires me all at the same time. I'm trying to raise them to be the change we wish to see and we need that so much. I'm still trying to process what happened in NY the other day just blocks from our first home as a family of four and the park where they took their first steps and down the street where the unimaginable happened 16 years ago. We have to be better. The world needs to be better. 🌏❤️💫

Just spending some time going through my archives on this rainy Sunday afternoon in the Hudson Valley. I have this photo I took of my self in an old barn in Vermont framed in my studio. Ten years ago I had just quit my job as a lawyer and I was about to start a new chapter that I had no idea how to really begin writing. My "plan" wasn't much of a plan, and I was more scared than anything else, but I was also excited and feeling ready for whatever was about to come. It was such a different time in my personal life and career so I love having this print in my workspace to remind me of both where I came from and the possibilities of where I can potentially go if I just keep moving forward. You don't know what you don't know but I guess you'll never know unless you try. What's your story? 🙏🏼👊🏼✨ PS--that's my husband's hand. He's so patient. #mlsphotostories #monicashulmanphotostories #selfie

Studio vibes. Spent the better part of my work day yesterday setting up my gallery wall. My studio space is small (but perfect for me) but the works make more sense hanging on the wall instead of leaning against it. I broke up the space with two black and white photos--one older one from my archives and one brand new one that I shot over the summer in Greece. I'll tackle the opposite wall over the next few weeks and hopefully finish my door sometime next week since I'm in between projects right now. Happy Friday and weekend, friends! 😃🙋🏻💫 #monicashulmanstudio #artflowsessions #makeart #studiotime #gallerywall #galleryofart
Date night. Who needs #instagramhusband when you've got #instagramdaughter? Photos by my own little 7-year-old love bug, budding creative director and personal paparazzi✨🙋🏻💫💕 An evening in the middle of the week that will be spent in heels and make-up instead of harem pants and bare feet deserves a picture! #ootd #ootn #imfancy #sometimes

New work that that was inspired by a dream my son had. He keeps me entertained with the details of not only his sleep but his play. What the world needs now is color, more color. Out of the chaos and uneasiness that seems to permeate our lives lately, I turn to art and color (and my family) to brighten my days and inspire me. Look around and you'll see that brightness every where. And when I can't seem to find it, I make it for myself. Always working on more than one thing and works in progress are my favorite bc I can't wait to find out what they people. ❤️💫 #happymonday #artflowsessions #monicashulmanstudio
