Been a rough afternoon.
Worn out by the Gold Star commentaries.
I keep seeing that telegram: “We regret to inform you...” No calls, no letters. Just a Western Union deliveryman. Short bursts of words.
The rest of you grows old. That day, if it comes for you, keeps you a boy for life.
My mother covered her ears when Taps was played. Her worst fear was realized and she slowly retreated into the safety of dementia.
Taps is for her tonight And every gold star family for whom the day is never done.

Meeting with state representative Lou Lang, Sandy Champion and George Gandara...
Talking about putting together a bill to criminalize counterfeit service dogs as well as develop a voluntary registration program for legitimate service dog teams
Incredibly productive meeting with Lou who is one of the great forces for veterans and all things good in the legislature

Waiting at the McDonald’s near the animal hospital. He knows something is up today. He normally likes Dr. Keene. But, today G won’t even look at him.

Just some swollen gums. I brush his teeth daily but want to make sure everything is OK.

The Harris hospital has been very kind. They agreed not to put him in a cage during recovery. And they will do everything they can to expedite getting him back to me

This will be only the second time in five years we’ve been apart for any length of time.

Taps at Jefferson Barracks.
Visited the site where Ben James’ grandfather rests.
Then met with the assistant director Dan Phillips USAF retired Colonel. We talked about dogs in the National Cemeteries. Only SDs are allowed. There’s been a little counterfeiting to date.
Spoke to a woman putting a Halloween pumpkin on her husband’s grave and at the urging of Col. Phillips we visited the final resting place for Hero, Michael Joseph Blassie who was interred at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before DNA identify his remains.
We also viewed the memorial for the Puerto Princessa POW massacre. 150 prisoners were forced into three tunnels and then gasoline poured in. Those not killed in explosions that ensued were bayoneted or shot by Japanese soldiers as they ran out of the caves on fire.
Finally we visited the site where famed Cardinals announcer John “Jack” Buck is buried.
A somber and special #fetch22 Small world dept: the Colonel knows my best friend from the military!

Running behind today. Imagine that.
Just came from another of the 14 original National cemeteries.
Now we are at Shirley Mays in Louisville with our lawyer Jan Clark!
Shirley’s hole in the wall is been visited by many, many celebrities. She was a civil rights icon in the 60s and one heck of a cook.
Eat your hearts out Mark Racas and Peg Dixon.
