Ciao everyone! @a_signorina_in_milan here with an #FRTakeover from the @fuocofoodfestival in Buccheri, a town in Sicily’s Iblei mountains. 35 chefs from all over Italy are here, but there’s not a portable stovetop in sight…they’re all cooking over an open flame! Prepping for his famous porchetta, Giuseppe Oriti from Il Vecchio Carro agriturismo in Abruzzo roasts a Nebrodi piglet, a black breed indigenous to Sicily.  #FuocoFoodFestival

The J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot is named for the “Los Osos” soils on which its grown in the relatively cool climate of the El Pomar district in Paso Robles. It’s a combination of site and conditions that have proven perfect for crafting complex, structured Merlot. 
Our Merlot is pure Paso Robles in a glass. Lush cherry / plum flavors with just the right amount of food-friendly tannins and a deliciously long vanilla – oak finish. Perfect with just about anything off the grill.

Final stop for our Merlot before release: barrel aging for 12 to 14 months. The oak aging and a touch of Malbec in the blend provide layered complexity, finish, and structure to the J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot. That subtle signature spice / vanilla note from the cooperage is the perfect finishing touch.

Not all red wine grapes are created equal. Did you know the name “Merlot” comes from a local French word for blackbirds, “mèrle?” Here’s a shot of one of our beautiful Merlot clusters, pre-pick, in the El Pomar district of Paso Robles.

At J. Lohr, we often harvest Merlot twice - early picks capture the classic varietal traits of Merlot while fruit harvested later in the season brings depth and intensity to this wine.

Jerry Lohr helped pioneer Paso Robles as a winegrowing region. In 1988, he planted his first Cabernet vines in the area. Today, three decades later, the Paso Robles appellation has a world-class reputation for producing great reds, including, of course, Merlot!

We’re just finishing up the 2017 harvest in Paso. So far, the Merlot fruit arriving at the winery looks sensational.
