Man down tonight on the group ride, but hopefully he'll be okay, and the sky was amazing!

Shadows of the track. We went to the #ShelbyCountySpeedway Friday night and a good time watching a friend race!

RAGBRAI day 7! The last day of the week in the corn promised 3,000 feet of climbing and delivered most of it on three monster hills in the last 18 miles of the day's total of 45. The day was sunny and beautiful but I was worried about getting to the final City of Lansing since our shuttle bus left at 2:30 and I did NOT want to miss our ride home! We made it fine after climbing until my legs felt dead and dipping our wheels in the Mississippi!

Day 6 of RAGBRAI brought us to lovely #Decorah #Iowa and #Nordicfest! The Rommegrot was fantastic; sweet and warm! Then came the hills afterward and a lovely dairy farm family handing out free chocolate milk with their sweet dog Suzie. 😁❤️🐶

Totality. I drove south about an hour and a half to get to 2 minutes of totality during the Aug 21, 2017 solar eclipse. This photo was close to as dark as it got. Totality was startling, and absolutely worth the effort to get there! Suddenly finding yourself in the middle of night on a strange Nebraska hilltop, next to a dead-end gravel road with a Bridge Out sign and a vast rustling corn field felt like the perfect storm of horror movie factors, not to mention the decaying farm house and barn I had seen further down the two gravel tire tracks. The solitary,(I hoped) darkness made me move closer to my car before light returned. And then it was over. The sun's light was back and the birds roosting on the wires looked at each other in surprise. I felt silly for being nervous and sped away, heading back north and trying to beat the traffic jams, which I did not.

I think Thursday, day 5 of RAGBRAI, where we woke up in Charles City and camped for the night in Cresco, was my favorite single day of the week. After the rain on Wednesday, Thursday was amazing with almost zero humidity, a clear blue sky, and a light breeze that never slowed us down.
The first photo is a magnificent bicycle arch in the meeting town, where a friendly woman took a photo of my brother and I. There's a normal RAGBRAI shot of cyclists streaming past. Then there is a photo of the blueberry Amish pie I demolished that day covered in ice cream, a photo of our tent neighbors Steve and Jim,(not sure where Jen is), who were great to have as neighbors the whole week, and finally, the vegetarian meal I picked for dinner to avoid the brisket sandwich. I ate the rice and beans and salads like someone was trying to take it from me and could have devoured another plate. It was AMAZING!

RAGBRAI day 4 started with gray skies and then opened up the dark sky and dumped on us for about 30 miles! The last 15 miles eased to a light rain. I was glad I had brought my Specialized rain resistant jersey. That kept me warm and fairly dry.
The smoke in the second photo is from Mr Pork Chop.

Day 3 was blue-skyed and beautiful, with winds that buffeted us from the side mostly, and kept the puffy clouds scudding across the sky while we rode on to Clear Lake, a gorgeous little lakeside community. The library ladies ladies were angels to me after my phone charging cable died!

That evening my brother bought fresh donut balls for our desert!

Day 2 of RAGBRAI XLV was Mr Pork Chop and Karras Loop Day. The vendors move with RAGBRAI, setting up along the route each day. Mr Pork Chop is one of the favorites, along with Beekman's ice cream, where you can hear the old motor popping as it runs the ice cream makers. There are many vendors; some from the local towns, others that travel to join the massive event!which can have over 20,000 riders take part, although only 10,000 can be officially registered for any one day.

This guy was creating a complete cool zone with the great sound waves his canoe was rolling on! He was cruising around the RAGBRAI Bike Expo before the first day of riding.

The first day dawned beautiful, mist in the air early, and thousands of bikes streaming east to meet the dawn!

What a great experience! My brother and I finished RAGBRAI yesterday, riding 411 miles from Orange City,Iowa to the Mississippi! I'll post a few pics a day over the next seven days, in the same order of the seven day ride.

Will these tires carry me all the way? Are they, or I, too worn to make it?

This is my first multi-day ride, my first RAGBRAI, and I don't want to fail.
I turn 50 in September and all the elders are gone now, the ones I never wanted to let down. This is for me.
Riding has brought me to some of the choicest moments of my life. I'm glad I found it again this year and realized I still love the place where the bicycle and I go together; where no one else has to come for me to feel completely smooth... completely happy.
Looking forward to this long ride, and to what I find along the trail.

I've always wanted to be tough, but rolling into my driveway and bursting into tears as I hug my bike is NOT going to help my reputation! After riding 20 miles, basically holding my breath the whole way, and making it home with no knee problem, and with the start of a 400+ mile ride four days away, the emotion was big and caught me completely off guard. I think the street was empty though! 😆😂☺️

Got motivated to go out in the heat and grabbed the Diverge off the wall. Flat rear tire was a surprise, but I hadn't had to change one on this bike so I was actually glad to do it before RAGBRAI. Now I'm REALLY glad it happened since somehow I had ended up carrying a completely wrong size tube for all this time! Am I a complete idiot?? No ride last night, patch failed and Om not trusting my patch abilities on a week long ride across Iowa anyway. 😆 I'll get the tube today and ride a 20 mile test on the knee today in even hotter weather...😳😁
