Didn't come out quite as I hoped, but I bet they'll still taste mega-yummy :) (next time, use more flour on the counter + buy a rolling pin!)

Maybe you call it “moving” or “transferring”; in the military, they call it a “change of station.” No matter the term used, for the past 22 years of my 33 years on this planet (so far), I’ve been relocating – both under my own choice + (somewhat) against my will.

It all began with a mere job transfer for my Mom (promotion + a pay raise, woo!), making us leave the small town in Indiana where I was born + raised to live in the largest metro area I’d ever been to at that age.

Then, one move led to another, which led to another, and once I became a legal adult, the relocations kept happening, but now, I had only myself to thank / blame / spend the money to do it.

To put it into perspective, here’s the list of all the places I’ve lived since I was 11 (deep breath!): Shaker Heights (Cleveland), Ohio
Dearborn (Detroit), Michigan
Avon (Hartford), Connecticut
Burnsville (Minneapolis), Minnesota
Middletown, Connecticut
Enfield, Connecticut
Stamford, Connecticut
San Francisco, California
West Hartford, Connecticut
Avon, Connecticut
San Diego, California
Oceanside, California
Avon, Connecticut
Brooklyn, New York
Avon, Connecticut
Austin, Texas

Some would call that a long list. Personally, I want my next move to be out of the USA (which I’m currently working on – hello, Japan!). At this point, you may be wondering how I’m a) sane + b) not bankrupt.

At times, both are debatable, but living in different parts of the country has taught me more about life, love, and happiness than staying in the same place or even traveling 1-2 times a year ever could have. >>> TO KEEP READING, click on the link in my profile <<<

This week's question: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO SPLURGE ON TO TREAT YOURSELF?

My answer: Oh, this is an easy one for me - a massage. A long 90-minute massage, then absolutely nothing to do but relax and read for the rest of the day. No cooking, no cleaning, no "work" - just rest (and probably some anime) :) What about YOU?

Reminder: your favorites don't define WHO you are, but they are a window into WHAT you find important + joyful.

If you don’t build in a little margin and time for nothing, you won’t be able to listen to your heart or process ideas. After a day of non-stop input, you have to recover, shut down, or numb out. Instead schedule nothing if only to give yourself a minute to remember who you are, what you want, and how you want to live.

If doing nothing is hard for you, consider the benefits. Hanging around, puttering, daydreaming or whatever form your nothing takes is restorative for your mind, body, and heart. It’s a gift to you and everyone around you. ( #📷 @bemorewithless via @latermedia )

This reminds me of one of my favorites quotes: a clean house is a sign of a wasted life.

I'm not messy by any means, but I'm not a clean freak. It helps that I don't own a lot (intentionally), but it also means that I make space physically + mentally to live the dirty, authentic life I want.

Are you living your dirty, awesome life? .

Ah, showers. For me, there’s nothing better after a workout, a long day, or a stressful situation than taking a shower to rinse off all the physical + mental stress.

Plus, the acoustics in there are great.

There’s nothing more vulnerable than being naked – unless you’re naked and singing.

Maybe that’s why so many of us enjoy singing in the shower. We’re alone, we’re vulnerable, + we can let it all out with zero judgments (unlike when you’re belting out a tune in your car). Music is also a spectacular human invention. I don’t think I have to explain that. You’re a smart one.

Music is the background of our entire lives + a powerful expression when mere words are hard to come by. Words explain, but music is felt.

As you’re reading this, you might be thinking, “Gah, weird, I don’t sing in the shower!” That’s cool (and boring) or you’re lying. Come on. Most of us do it.

My post about dancing naked in the shower to Weird Al Yankovic has been pretty popular (y’all are weird + I love it), so it’s time to talk about signing in the shower (as if I was running out of boundaries to break with you). Not just the act of singing in the shower – I could ramble on about that for over an hour – but WHAT you’re singing.

Are they songs about Love? Sadness? Empowerment?

Here are the 5 songs I sang in the shower before I wrote this post, along with some insight into the meanings behind them: >>> TO KEEP READING, click on the link in my profile <<<

This week's question: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO ON VACATION?

My answer: In a broad sense, I love going to the mountains. Put me around lots of trees and I'm ridiculously happy. In a specific sense, one of the places I've visited that I loved (and still go back to) is Portland, Maine.

A few years ago, my husband and I were in Portland, Maine for New Year's and we got hit with a fantastic snow storm. We were out, trudging around it in, having a blast. So far, I've got nothing but happy memories in Portland.

Of course, our next BIG vacation will be going to Japan for at least a month in 2019 (which will be our 10-year wedding anniversary year) :D

What about YOU?

We can never fully control the results of our actions, but we CAN plan our actions intelligently + with conscious risk.

Attachment to a specific outcome only adds stress + anger.
Have a goal, plan your actions, take them, and repeat :) .

Friends are nice to have, aren’t they? You can do all kinds of fun things together, and you can be there for each other when things aren’t so fun.

Well … so I’m told.

In the course of my 33 years on this planet, I’ve only had 3 close friends: 1 in elementary school, 1 in high school, + 1 former boyfriend. That’s it.

You may think I’m exaggerating. That’s OK. I wish I was.

As a social, community-based species, it’s natural to want to find others you get along with (inside or outside of your biological family) and spend more time with them.

We did it to simply survive being killed tens of thousands of years ago, but now we need it to survive mentally + emotionally (though some people are still threatened by death on a near-daily basis, which is horrifyingly embarrassing for the human species, but that’s another post altogether). For me, friends have become a mythical achievement, like the perfectly fried egg or having absolutely zero acne. I’ve seen so many others do it, but I’m pretty sure they’re aliens.

Maybe it’s because I fall towards the introvert side of the social spectrum.

Maybe it’s because I’m an INFJ that, “keeps a small circle of friends and prefers to work alone. Although an INFJ may have hundreds of acquaintances, if they call you a ‘friend,’ you can be sure that they mean it for life.” Maybe it’s because I’m an Enneagram 5 whose, “challenge is to understand that they can pursue whatever questions or problems spark their imaginations and maintain relationships, take proper care of themselves, and do all of the things that are the hallmarks of a healthy life.” I’ve got all 3 against me, but that’s not the only thing.

I also used to hate myself. With a passion. Sometimes I still do. >>> TO KEEP READING, click on the link in my profile <<<

This week's question: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY?

My answer: Normally, I would say "any holiday with good food,", which is true, but if I have to be specific, it's Halloween, which just passed.
As a kid, it was all about the chocolate, but I've also always had an interest in spooky, dead things. Plus, it is my Mum's favorite holiday as well, so we always went all out decorating the house and playing scary noise tapes every night.

Halloween is yet another reminder that death is just another chapter in our lives - it can be scary or it can be natural, but it's up to us to decide.

What about YOU?

If you've ever truly been in love with someone else, you know that it's a feel nothing else in this world can replicate.

How are we supposed to feel like that with ourselves? Our own worst critic? Our own attention-striving ego?

Among the spiritually inclined (a term I use very intentionally), the major message is self-love. It all starts with you.

And it does. Having battled with diagnosed depression + social anxiety for 15+ years, I can tell you that self-hatred was a root cause.

I didn't trust myself/my intuition/my inner voice. I didn't like parts of my personality that made me different. I didn't like the things about myself that we're truly me, but "inconvenienced" other people.

Maybe you've felt that before. Maybe you're feeling it right now.

Over the years, through talk therapy, medication, Yoga, self-study, and a lot of crying in the corner, a quote emerged that I still say to this day: "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?" - RuPaul

That's the ticket! I'll simply flip everything 180 and love myself unconditionally. That will fix it, right?

Wrong ... so hilariously wrong. There is no 180. There is no magic switch.

Instead, the self-loathing continued to grow as I learned new skills to bury on top of it. Maybe I'll become a Yoga teacher. Mabe I'll move to New York City. Maybe I'll divorce my husband.

Yeah, totally - it must be something external that I need to do to help the love inside of me bloom, right?

Oh honey ... no. But doing all of those things sure taught me a lot about myself - what I'm good at, what's I'm not good at, the type of people that piss me off, and most importantly, what I want for myself in this short lifetime. >>> TO KEEP READING, click on the link in my profile <<<

This week's question: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE/COCKTAIL?

IF YOU'RE NOT A DRINKER, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINK THAT YOU ENJOY ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS?

My answer: I didn't start drinking alcohol until after I turned 30. While my exposure to alcohol hasn't been extensive (thankfully, haha), my favorite beverage is whiskey (especially Japanese whiskey) + my favorite cocktail is a (well-made) Old Fashioned. Getting the proportions just right, as well as the blend of cirtrus - totally not easy (I've tried!), but I can certainly appreciated a well-made version.

What about YOU?

Today we’re going Behind the Boss Mask for the final time.

I never imagined that I would end the show after only 60 episodes, but it has been an incredible learning experience, with every intention of creating a NEW show in the future.

For now, it's time for me to get back to sharing my insight + perspective via weekly bite-sized blog posts (every Friday) and an upcoming book.

I hope you'll come along with me for the ride :) .
