I take joy in being a grandmother – deep down, goosebump joy at the laughter, the hugs, the bedtime kisses, and the sustaining hope for what comes next. With so many terrible and scary things happening right now, my grandkids’ smiles remind me why I get up and fight every morning. It’s to build a future, not just for them – but for all of our kids. #GrandparentsDay
On the 54th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech, I was honored to join Dr. Bernice King and the King Center at Ebenezer Baptist Church tonight. #bctkingcenter #mlk #ihaveadream #shepersisted
Tonight we saw the new sequel to Al Gore's @aninconvenienttruth. Climate change is upon us and time is running out, but Al Gore makes the case that people - all of us - can make the changes that can save us. #beinconvenient
I needed to replenish my soul tonight.
Had to stop in Sturbridge today for the Boston Globe's top BBQ spot in New England: @btsmokehouse. Bruce, our granddaughter and I couldn't decide what to have, so I think we ordered the whole menu: brisket, ribs, pulled pork, black-eyed peas, mac & cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, corn bread and root beer. We brought home enough meat to last for days. What a fun place with great food.

My sweetie Bruce and I are in DC this week. Last night when I got home, Bruce met me with a sweeping “ta-da!” and flung open the door to the hall closet. New shelf. Hooks. A place for grocery bags. “Happy Early Anniversary!” Ok, that may not seem very romantic, but I LOVE organized closets. (Yes, I hang all my jackets together, arranged by color.) But I have zero time to hang a shelf and even less time to get out the drill and put up some hooks. The new shelf and hooks (and Bruce’s enthusiasm for them) made me laugh – and reminded me just how sweet and thoughtful Bruce always is.
Back when I proposed to Bruce, I knew he was pretty special. But through decades of ups and downs – kids, dogs, moves, living in separate cities, deaths in the family, and on and on – he’s turned out to be even more special than I originally thought. He even hangs a shelf on occasions like this. I’m a very lucky woman.
Happy anniversary, Sweetie. I love you.
It was a great treat to see @shakeandco in Lenox do Cymbeline last night. The play was sharp, bawdy and just plain fun.
We're back at the Old Forge in Lanesboro, one of our favorite spots in Western MA to stop for beer and root beer!
Saw the world premiere of "Glow" last night at the world famous @jacobspillow dance festival in Becket. Anyone who thinks dance is boring MUST see this show. The dancers were electric - literally!

I know it's been a long, tough year. But last night, I told @fullfrontalsamb: we #persist. Link in bio to watch the full interview on our Facebook page. #samanthabee #neverthelessshepersisted
Thank you all for the birthday wishes! Glad to be back in Massachusetts to celebrate with my sweetie Bruce. After a quick birthday dinner at Giulia for the best Italian in town, I’m getting right back to work to fight the GOP's monstrosity of a so-called "health care" bill. The best birthday gift I could possibly receive is for you to get in this fight, too.

From the time I was in second grade, I wanted to be a teacher. But our family was a paycheck-to-paycheck family. By the time I was a senior in high school, we didn’t have the money for a college application, much less the money to send me off to school. I was sixteen, angry and miserable.

After one especially bitter battle with my mother, I threw some clothes in a bag and ran out of the house. Hours later, Daddy found me on a bench at the bus station downtown. He sat down beside me, and asked if I remembered the time after his heart attack.

I remembered. I’d been 12 years old, and I’d seen how fast a family could be turned upside down.

Daddy said it was the worst time in his life. "Your mother was at home when they took the station wagon,” he said in a low voice. “And then they said they were going to take the house. She cried every night.” Sitting there on the bench in the bus station, he told me that he had failed and that the shame had nearly killed him. He wanted to die.

What happened? I asked.

Daddy sat silently for a long time. Finally, he took my hand in both of his and held it tightly.

It got better, he said. Your mother found work. We made some payments. After a while, I went back to work. We had less money, but it was enough to get by. We got caught up on the mortgage. You seemed to do okay.

Finally he turned and looked at me. “Life gets better, punkin.” And he was right. Daddy and I headed home. It was a winding path, but I eventually made it through college and started teaching school. And once one door opened, so did another and another. Life got better.

I’ve carried that story in my pocket for decades. It was how I made it through the painful parts. Divorce. Disappointments. Deaths. When things get tough, I still hear my daddy’s voice, telling me to hang on. It’s a part of him that will always be with me.

Happy Father’s Day to all the daddies who are trying their hardest. Happy Father’s Day to every daddy who sets the example every day of what it means to care for the people you love. Happy Father’s Day to every daddy who tells a child, “Life gets better, punkin.”

This one is fearless. I'm not quite sure when that realization hit me. Bennie was a sweet baby who was never afraid of strangers. Or spiders. Or stairs. She climbed everything, ate everything, and laughed uproariously at the craziness of the world.
And now she’s celebrating her 12th birthday. She is a platform diver. She climbs rock walls and races down rocky trails. And she tells killer math jokes — even to boys. She is still fearless — and I love everything she does. Happy birthday, Bennie! #tbt
