Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake (Sitting Bull) a Lakota Holy Man, was killed by Indian Agency Police while attempting to arrest him over fears he would join the ghost dance movement. In this image I’ve added 4 images from Sitting Bull’s era. They are, Sitting Bull, his tipi, him with his horses and the ghost dancers. Hopefully, you can see them. -

Momma and her calf making their way across Hayden Valley. Bison often travel significant distances from summer to winter ranges. #bison #buffalo #yellowstone #nationalpark #ynp #yellowstonepledge @yellowstonenps
Even though bison can weigh up to 1400lbs, they can run up to 40 mph. Safe bet they don’t stop on a dime though, so I’d remember that the next time you think about getting closer than you should be!! -

Heavy coats help keep the bison warm even in very cold temperatures.

Bison. Yellowstone National Park. As the winter approaches life begins to become more challenging for the bison, food sources become more scarce and snow piles up making travel and escape more difficult. But for the bison and Native Americans, the thick coat provided warmth and housing, so that both could and can survive the extremes of the winter. -

Bison. The importance of this majestic giant of the west can not be understated when it comes to the roll it played in the prosperity and challenges faced by North America’s indigenous peoples. After many years of bison being a center piece of their culture, they were hunted to near extinction as people from the east began a continuous invasion of their lands. With bison numbers decimated and the number of ‘settlers’ on the rise, life would be forever changed for Indian people. -

One of the most enduring pieces of history in the American West, the tipi or lodge. One day I will have my own. -

This will be the last of my native portraits for a while. I wanted to end this series with this image because it is one of my all time favorites. This image resonates within me, there are so many things that I think of when I look at it. I believe it speaks clearly to the past, present and future in Native American culture. Remembrance of History, forced assimilation, rich culture, proud military service, and as always stewardship, leadership and example as well as drive to live and prosper. North American Indian Days, Browning, Montana. -

Stephen Small Salmon. Always one of my favorite people to photograph. Our conversations were more important than the images. So much to learn from someone who’s seen so much.
