I’ve been sick for 2+ weeks & now Aaron’s sick, too. Finally went to doc today & his verdict: strep x 2.
Kids are healthy as can be, making themselves PB & Js & scavenging through laundry baskets for clean clothes—building resilience, right? Life skills? The plan for tonight: tea, soup, watching Hoosiers & occasionally competing for who feels worse. :)

Saturday morning reading.
I always, always love @kellycorrigan’s writing, & Tell Me More is no exception. Beautifully written, funny, brave. I’m a fan.

This month I hit a publishing milestone twelve years in the making. The details aren’t important, but this morning I’m pausing to pray & to offer my deep gratitude.
The only thing I ever wanted to be, as a little girl, was a writer. I wrote stories all day & all night, read voraciously—I still do, of course.
To every one of you who has bought a book, recommended one, cheered me on when I was stuck, opened a door for me, today I’m saying thank you to you.
For every editor, publishing team member, bookseller, thank you.
And to my fellow writers: let’s keep going. I’m in your corner. Put in that proposal. Or dust off your laptop tonight after the kids are in bed. Plunge ahead even when it scares you, especially when it scares you.
I believe more than ever that story-telling & truth-telling can change our world, so let’s keep telling brave stories. The world needs more great stories.
I’m cheering you on all the way.

THANK YOU.
AND KEEP GOING.
❤️

Oh, these two books are absolutely GORGEOUS—look at the binding on Wabi-Sabi Welcome! And the illustrations inside Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat are fantastic. One thing that makes coming back from vacation a little easier: beautiful books that you opened at Christmas & couldn’t fit in your suitcase. Settling in happily with both of them on this cold Midwestern night. :)

Waving goodbye.
So thankful for fantastic family time, conch fritters, wind & waves, golf cart rides, snorkeling adventures, sandy feet, saltwater, lots of boating, memories made, time to dream & play.
Grateful x 1000.

Ringing in the New Year in this much-loved spot...and let’s be clear, by “ringing in” and “new year,” I mean at 9pm we took the kids on a golf cart ride to the club & they ordered Sprite. And we loved every wild second of it. :)

Every New Year’s Eve, before we ring in the New Year, we share ten blessings of the year that’s ending.
I love this tradition: instead of jumping forward into new & next, we pause & pray & express gratitude for what we’ve been given.
This morning, Henry & I sat on the porch writing our lists to share tonight, while Aaron took a walk with Mac to work on his list.
I was raised on this tradition of gratitude, & I love inviting our sons into it.
This year was a difficult one. And still there is so much that I’m thankful for. Both are true. ❤️

Morning reading.
Reading great writing makes us better writers—and better humans—& Barbara Brown Taylor is, in my view, absolutely one of the best.

“The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea.” —Isak Dinesen
You know I agree wholeheartedly.
This morning’s reading: Isak Dinesen’s short stories, including Babette’s Feast.
