Did anybody else spend the morning preaching about the importance of eating healthy foods to their kids then devour half a tub of peppermint ice cream after the kids left the house? Asking for a friend...

Today on the blog (link in profile), I'm so excited to be partnering with @Dove to talk about caring for skin during the colder, drier months - beyond the face, to include the entire body. We’re sharing 8 tips for winter skin care, including my favorite, Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant. It cares for my skin while keeping me fresh and dry for 48 hours. The best! #DovePartner #ExpectMore

I'm not really a fan of the concept of New Year's resolutions, but this year, I really want to make some simple lifestyle changes. (#ad) So on January 1st (my birthday), I wrote down some attainable changes with a whole person lifestyle approach (body, mind, and spirit) that I will commit to for 2018. I then broke them down into small, concrete daily tasks that, together, will (hopefully!) make a profound difference. A few of them: set aside 30 minutes a day of strictly family time, cook 3 dinners a week at home, and, #ForGumsSake, take care of my mouth by taking care of my gums with new @Crest Gum Detoxify toothpaste. Hop over to my blog (link in profile) today to see the rest of them!

It's a miracle guys - he (sort of) sat still for a birthday picture. Emmett Hunter, I love you with all of my heart. You have taught me what it means to be brave and persistent despite having to face serious hardships at such a young age. Thank you for making every single day magical. May this trip around the sun be your best yet, my sweet little boy. (Swipe to see shots of the joint Tutus + T-Rexes birthday party we threw for his sister and him on Sunday.)

I'M BACK! I've got 2 things to share today, friends. 1. This curious, artistic, energetic, sweet little boy turns 2 years old today. This photo was actually taken a year ago on his first birthday - you know, back when he would sit still for photos. (Fingers crossed he'll let me capture even 1 birthday moment today!) For those who don't know, Emmett had a difficult first year. He was diagnosed with the most dangerous form of childhood epilepsy and initially given a very poor prognosis. This second year was completely different. He experienced no seizures and lived a completely typical toddler life. Not a day goes by that we don't feel extreme gratitude watching him run and play and laugh and just be a kid. 2. In the past 2.5 weeks I have been so busy (holidays, severely sick kids, a trip to Denver, a move into a new house, a joint birthday party in new house 2 days after moving, etc.) that I have only posted twice on IG and only briefly stopped in here every couple of days. While I love this community and am grateful for the opportunities it has presented in terms of my work, this "break" has reminded me of the importance of staying present in real life, and the fact that while it does have its good points, social media is not reality and can easily suck away precious time that I'll never get back. This is something I hope to keep in mind as I navigate through 2018. Real life is where we are supposed to live, and social media should just be a fun place to visit. May we all find the right balance of that in the coming year. 💛

Today is my birthday, and I am currently at 30,000 feet in the air headed back to Chicago after 2 glorious kid-free nights (my first in 3 years) in Denver (swipe this pic and/or visit my IG Stories to see some photos from that adventure). My heart is full after being able to ring in the New Year and celebrate another trip around the sun for me with my love and some of my oldest, dearest friends. I cried when I said goodbye to them, but I quickly remembered that in a few hours I get to squeeze these babies again. I'm feeling very fortunate and grateful right now. Happy 2018, friends.
Well, I took a week break from Instagram, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't kind of glorious to unplug. Truth be told though, it wasn't intentional (although in 2018 I will absolutely take more social media breaks, this time with intention). This past week has just been incredibly intense in good ways (the holidays, precious family time, and this amazing, kind, smart, creative little girl turning 4) and bad (a family emergency, a stomach virus, and then Essley spending her 4th birthday in urgent care for horrific coughing fits/breathing issues), and I have not had a spare minute to be online aside from work. My husband also went back on tour with the band, so it's been just me dealing with it all, and this mama is tired. THAT SAID, I am typing this from an insanely comfy hotel bed in Denver, where I flew today for 2 nights kid-free (my first in 3 years) to celebrate New Year's Eve and my birthday with the band my husband stage manages and hundreds of my favorite people. Needless to say, I am feeling very grateful right now. 💛 Happy New Year, friends! 2018 is going to be a good one.

I have a deep, unwavering love for guacamole, but you just don't see it as often during the wintertime. And while I get it (the winter months aren't exactly prime avocado season), I don't think the goodness of guacamole should be forgotten during the colder months. So I decided to whip together a winter/holiday inspired guac (oh hey pears and pomegranate seeds) that I could start eating on the cold weather regular. Get the recipe on the blog (link in profile).

Someone refused to wear her ballet shoes to ballet class the other day. She told me that her new Peppa Pig Light & Shine shoes from @jumpfootwear were much better for grand jetés. I mean really, I didn't blame her. The shoes are adorable, they light up with every step, and I can see how they'd give those leaps some extra oomph. She's also, as those of you who have followed me for a while know, a huge fan of Peppa. (And I'm a huge fan of Jump Footwear's family-friendly prices and always free shipping, just saying.) In the end, she wore her regular ballet shoes. But as soon as class was over, these were immediately back on her feet, and she put on an elaborate performance for us in the living room. There may have been a standing ovation at the end. #JumpForJoy #partner

Doing any sort of holiday activity makes Essley (and me!) smile, but helping me put together the grown up stockings might be her favorite activity of all. (I mean, look at that silly, excited grin!) And speaking of smiles, there is a certain stocking stuffer that I'm especially looking forward to giving this year: @Crest 3D White Radiant Mint Whitening Toothpaste. I've been using it myself to help keep my smile healthy and bright, and I know the recipients are going to love it as much as I do. It's a power-packed toothpaste you guys. It removes up to 80% of surface stains for whiter teeth, protects against future stains, strengthens teeth, and is safe on tooth enamel. And @Amazon is running a deal for $2 off the value pack, from 12/17 - 12/19! Check out my IG Stories and swipe up for the link to the deal, or click on the link in my bio. What are you most excited to put in stockings this year? #ad #choosesmiles #choosecrest

Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I'm not only a huge proponent of small, independent businesses (#ad), but I've also owned them myself since college. I know first hand how challenging it can be to run a small business, how much genuine heart and soul goes into small business ownership, and how intensely small business owners appreciate each and every bit of support they receive. I do shop big brands during the holidays, but I always buy at least half of my gifts from small businesses. And when I can do it online quickly and easily, I am doubly stoked. Today on the blog, I'm talking about the incredibly special gifts I bought for all of the women in my family from a truly wonderful small online business called Mango + Main, and how the process of buying them was a breeze, thanks to @PayPal. This morning Essley woke up sour (hmmm, wonder where she could have possibly gotten her dislike of early mornings?) #ad, but quickly turned sweet when she realized there are only 7 days until Christmas (!). She immediately ran downstairs to look for our mischievous elf, and found him sitting on a fluffy snow-like throw, cooking up a tasty soup of impish, sour-then-sweet (just like her) Sour Patch Kids and soft, chewy, fruity Swedish Fish. Needless to say, we were both pretty stoked to see our elf pranked us with such a delicious holiday soup. If you'd like your elf to make a yummy candy soup for your little ones, just head over to Walmart and grab some Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish (and maybe add in some OREO Chocolate Candy Bars - mmmm), throw them in a pot with a big ol' wooden spoon, and you and your elf are good to go. Happy Holidays! #CandyCountdownAtWalmart #IC

#ad One of our family's favorite #Holiday traditions is to get into our pajamas, snuggle up close under a blanket, watch holiday movies, and snack on PLANTERS Mixed Nuts and Cashews. Every single one of us is a big fan of PLANTERS nuts (Essley and Robbie love the cashews, and Emmett and I always go for the mixed nuts). They're the perfect snack for holidays, whether you're hosting cocktail hour, decking the halls, or just having some holiday family chill time like us. Check out the link in my profile to grab some yummy PLANTERS Mixed Nuts and Cashews for your own family's #PLANTERSHoliday activities! @MrPeanutOfficial

Essley this morning: "Guess what mama? In 10 days Santa will bring me all the things my heart desires. All the presents. All the things." Glad she understands what truly matters about Christmas. 😐

I think my favorite Christmas of all time was when Essley was about to turn one, and Robbie's parents came here to Chicago from Arizona. (#ad) It was the only time that all of the grandparents were able to be here for the holidays, and everything just felt right. Real life doesn't always allow for those storybook holidays though, and it's just not logistically possible to repeat that magical Christmas every year. But that doesn't stop us from doing everything we can to make it *feel* like we're together. Today on the blog (link in profile), I'm sharing some of the ways we stay connected as a family when we can't be together for the holidays, including some very special holiday gifts the kids made their grandparents (that thanks to @theupsstore, were expertly packed and shipped, and arrived safe and sound in plenty of time for Christmas). #HolidaysMadeEasy #TheUPSStore
