What is ritual?
"A ritual is any action we take that has meaning beyond its appearance. Dinner can simply be the fulfillment of a biological need for nutrition. or it can be a way for a family to feel united.
What makes a ritual sacred, however, is the intention behind it. The word "sacred" comes from the Latin word sacrum, which relates to power or strength. So, a sacred ritual is an exchange or action that you imbue with meaning, thus giving it power. Daily life is ripe with opportunities for ritual and ways to turn the mundane into the sacred." (The Importance of Ritual, Yoga Journal)
Forming rituals around your home practice is KEY to its success; it empowers us to be creative and authentic as we add meditation to our daily routine. All this helps us *look forward* to meditating, instead of seeing it as a daily to-do.

Hello all! Just a few more days to register for Intro to Meditation with me at Yoga Home. We start next Thursday. Meditation is serious business but make no mistake, this series is lots of fun. Sitting still is tough stuff for us on-the-go types. We'll explore fun and playful ways to change your perspective to stay motivated and mindful in everyday life.
Try this simple mindfulness exercise over lunch today. It's called the "Raisin Experience." 🍇
This can be done by anyone with any kind of food (although one with an interesting or unusual texture, smell, or taste is best). As you sit down for your meal, be present with what you're about to eat. In this case, a raisin.
• The way the raisin looks
• How it feels
• How your skin responds to its manipulation
• Its smell
• Its taste
Focusing on the single object is meant to bring your mind to the present, to what is right in front of you.
By focusing on the raisin in your hand and making a point to notice everything about it, you are unlikely to be expending energy, time and attention on worrying or ruminating about other parts of your life. This is the foundation of mindful living. It steadies the distracting and counterproductive "turnings" of the mind and sets the stage for focused and present living.

As the months grow colder and as the days get shorter, shift to meditation. 📿 This is the best time to begin or return to your stillness practice... we're settled in the new routines of Fall but not yet in the holiday craze.
This series is intended to (re)launch your meditation practice and create a supportive community, but it is never the same!
