I had frantically scribbled inside my bright yellow notebook as the Holy Spirit generously “downloaded” words, scenes, and phrases into my heart in relation to the upcoming years. It was January 9, 2017 and I was joining my church in fasting social media and television in hopes of hearing God without distraction. In great excitement I scribed pages of all the things I had no insight to but that flooded my heart. “2020 with Inspire Kailua?” I circled alongside detailed visual accounts of Marshall and I both laying hands and praying over our different communities.
I wildly circled in my notebook, cautiously wondering what it all meant and *assuming* it was something prophetic about business and travel, not giving it all much thought yet knowing these words and visions were not my own, they were from the Lord. Heck! If I had it my way this was NOT what I would be daydreaming of.
Yet you can imagine my surprise when, nearly 8 months later I casually pick up a booklet at @inspirechurchtv detailing where financial contributions had been made and future plans their “2020 Vision” they called it. “HOLD UP”. I thought. Is this REAL?!?! I took it for what it was worth, knowing God was speaking and agreeing to let it sink it without knowing much else in the process.
And as I again fasted this month (avoiding scrolling social media and TV, there seems to be a theme with my sources of distraction, here!) one of the devotionals for the day was directed toward growth of the church, new locations and, you guessed it, their “2020 Vision”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I quite literally gasped out loud.
“What day did God give me that ‘download’?” I said out loud. Digging into the back of the cabinet I pulled out that old yellow notebook, flipping to the pages of words filled from visions I’ve clung so tightly to and there it was, on the top of the page, January 9, 2017. Exactly a year to the day God showed me a little nugget of confirmation for that crystal clear 2020 Vision, all in His perfect timing.

8 years ago (and 1 day, because this is a day late but not a dollar short!), 4 years of dating and just short of a month engaged, we walked into the Justice of the Peace and nervously exchanged our vows. It took a lot of convincing for me to elope before deployment, I didn’t want to be “that girl”, but it didn’t take a lot to convince me to marry you — that I knew to be good. We were young and living life, just trying to make it work. And after 8 years of marriage, 3 puppies, a few different moves, endless road trips visiting each other, tons of popcorn + chex mix, boot camp signatures to medical discharge papers, brunette to blonde, hawaiian sunshine out our front door and the addition of a gigantic red beard, we now find ourselves again on the cusp of new, unexpected and sure to be exciting season of raising a son on the way. There have been lots of changes, new homes, new faces and new directions to navigate and puddles of ridiculous tears shed yet there is no one, I mean no one, I’d rather go through this life with than you. Even if you do wear a fanny pack. Happy Anniversary, @woodrow34 can’t wait to see what this year has in store. Although I already have an idea... 📸 by @kayleent (second photo from my 21st birthday — you can see that fool was already googely eyed in love! 😍🤣💁🏼‍♀️)

I left a friend’s house, racing for the Kauai airport, worship music blasting in hopes I didn’t miss my flight home on New Year’s Day. “I don’t mind though, God” I chatted with him out loud, “being able to spend time with a friend in prayer was worth it” I causally conversed with my Creator. With minutes to spare I made it to the boarding gate; the flight coming in was thankfully delayed and I soared into the clouds singing and praising the entire 20 minute ride to Oahu. ☁️
“PRAYER” God had said to me. So quickly and bluntly that, truth be told I had brushed off the answer to my “word of the year” question, assuming that since it had arrived into my head so quickly after asking that this prompt answer couldn’t be trusted. It was too fast and entirely too simple of a request, surely my “word of the year” needed more time to be uncovered. I had actually considered there was NO new word, as “speak: TESTIFY!” had been the push of 2017 and I was cautiously wondering if I had taken that request far enough, sharing fully about Jesus, or if I should aim to carry the same notion into 2018. But during my drive to make it onto the plane I knew what I had heard was true: pray. “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.” 💓 While I am called to use my gift of gab, sharing, speaking and certainly testifying, the Lord didn’t assign me to the prayer team for nothin’ and there in a friend’s living room in Princeville the heavens opened up, the Holy Spirit came down and as always He took my words and replaced them with his own. Very few things give me as much excitement than the opportunity to lay hands + pray for others and while I continue to follow His commands and testify I am eager to do what’s next, amping up the most powerful tool of all: the power of prayer. I was so thankful to realize, coasting across the sky that without thinking or planning, it’s exactly how I had managed to start of 2018. 🙏🏻 Or, maybe he know’s it going to take a lot of prayers to get through the next year.🤰🏼👶🏼🚫😴🤦🏼‍♀️🙏🏻💆🏼‍♀️🙌🏻 Either way, we ready! 📸 photo by @kayleent #ashleygoodwintestify ➡️ yep, that’s happening! 💓 What’s YOUR word for 2018?

While 2018 is sure to bring us a year of change, something I’ve been notoriously UNFOND of, I’m oddly excited for the grit, determination and hard work it’s potentially going to require. Okay, definitely going to require. Hey, maybe a little extra challenge&change is all this girl needs every once in a while to keep things fresh! Looking forward to forging ahead with weddings + sessions, adding some fun little things to the Ashley Goodwin print shop and with great hopes and eagerness diving back into commercial photography + styling! If this summer day at @tolentinohoneyco taught me anything it was just how much I love getting hands on and truly creating. Tell me, what are you looking forward to this 2018? | @tolentinohoneyco + @bustle_marina florals provided by @passionroots + all hands on deck with @chel.sea.rae + @thechadular.

Happy Holladays! Christmas in Hawaii, I know I know, sounds “rough”, right? 😂🤣🤪 Believe it it not, it takes some SERIOUS effort to make it feel remotely festive around here. Christmas movies on repeat, hot chocolate on tap and allllll the Shaka Santa Christmas things. Luckily a little bit of rain these past few days means hoodies are required — happily adding to the cozied up vibe. It’s taken me years but I’ve finally got Christmas in Hawaii down pat: the beach bungalow is a winter wonderland, holly jolly tunes on blast 24/7 and a schedule of events that would make Mrs. Clause jealous. Homemade marshmallows, cookies and vin chaud (for Marshall, duh). No snow required (but with a beach day, ofcourse)! Tell me, what do YOU do to get into the holiday spirit in warm weather places? 🌤☃️
