Dry Tortugas, a collection of seven islands located seventy miles west of Key West, Florida, protects the best beaches in the Key West area. These islands were originally used by Spanish merchants and explorers because of their location between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Today, Dry Tortugas is the largest no-take marine reserve in the continental U.S.

It’s #NationalTakeAHikeDay! Some of the best places in the country to enjoy a walk outdoors are on public lands. National parks, wildlife refuges and recreation areas -- as well as National Scenic Trails, National Recreation Trails and National Historic Trails -- are amazing places to exercise, marvel at stunning landscapes, learn incredible stories and make lasting memories. Here’s a great view from the famous South Kaibab Trail at #GrandCanyon National Park in #Arizona. Where will you #FindYourWay? Table Rock #Wilderness in #Oregon is a steep and rugged terrain with a quiet forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock, crowds of rhododendron on many of the upper slopes and an island of old growth in an ocean of forest development. A remnant of a lava flow that once covered this region along the western foothills of the Cascades, the "fortress" of #TableRock stands at 4,881 feet above the northeastern portion of this small wilderness. Dive into adventure at Biscayne National Park in #Florida. Stretching out from a shoreline fringed with mangrove forest, the majority of the park covers the aquamarine waters of Biscayne Bay and extends into the Atlantic Ocean. Boating and fishing are popular activities, but some of the best views of #Biscayne are found under the water, exploring the third largest #coral reef in the world. #CraterLake National Park in #Oregon is one of the snowiest places in the country. ❄️⛄️❄️ In early November, the park is already wearing a blanket of snow. The North Entrance Road and Rim Drive are closed, but the park is open, and at Rim Village, you can enjoy stunning views of the lake and landscape shining in white and blue. #Katmai National Park and Preserve is world-renowned for brown bear viewing. 🐻🐻 About 2,200 brown bears are estimated to inhabit the park, and more bears than people are estimated to live on #Alaska Peninsula. For those who visit the park (or are frequent viewers of #BearCam), they can learn about a bear’s behavior -- like this mama and her three cubs standing up. Bear cubs often imitate their mother’s every move, and standing on hind legs allows bears to get a better view or smell of what’s around them. Photo by A. Few landscapes in the world are as striking and memorable as that of #GrandTeton #NationalPark. Located in northwestern #Wyoming, the Teton Range dominates @grandtetonnps’s skyline, forests carpet the mountainsides and noisy streams cascade down rocky canyons to larger lakes. As fall turns into winter, we have amazing summer memories like this one to tide us over until next year. Many first-time visitors at #PointReyes National Seashore think that they can see everything within a day, but they soon realize that to really explore #California’s @pointreyesnps requires much more than a day. From a leisurely drive that winds its way over Inverness Ridge and a hike up Mt. Wittenberg under towering Douglas firs to a walk along expansive sand beaches and a stroll through the Cypress tree tunnel, there is something new to discover with every visit. Thanks to a recent donation, #Sabinoso Wilderness in #NewMexico is now publicly accessible for the first time since it was established. Hikers, hunters, photographers, horseback riders and outdoor enthusiasts can now marvel at the sandstone cliffs of #Canyon Largo, gorgeous cottonwood and ponderosa forests, and ancient pueblo ruins. With very little evidence of humans, the #wilderness is an excellent place to find solitude and recreation. Photo by Bob Wick, Bureau of Land Management (@mypubliclands). #usinterior

Over 1.25 million years ago, a massive volcanic eruption created a 13-mile wide dimple in northern #NewMexico. Hot springs, fumaroles and Redondo Peak, a 11,00-foot tall lava dome, reveal the caldera’s geologic past. Most of the area is now part of #VallesCaldera National Preserve. Native Americans in the area used volcanic obsidian for arrowheads and spear points, starting a hunting tradition that lives on in the park today.
