Boobies on the island 🏝
Our first stop on the coast - Isla de la Plata (Silver Island) is home to a large population of blue-footed boobies. Having no natural predators on the island, they are not very scared of people, and many make their nests right in the middle of the walking trails! Unfortunately rats were introduced to the island, which puts these boobies at risk as they eat the eggs and young chicks.

The road to Zumbahua ⛰
On the last day of the bike tour @hanfigs raises a triumphant fist for the gorgeous downhill stretch to Zumbahua - the town nestled in between mountains.

Lake Quilotoa 🏞
Since we gained some time on our first day of the bike tour we had some time to spend hiking around the gorgeous crater lake in Quilotoa. It sits around 3900m so the hiking was pretty slow going but the views were worth it!

Day 2 of the Quilotoa bike tour 🚵‍♀️
We were greeted with this view after biking a steep uphill to an altitude of about 3900m. (About 600m higher than the top of Mt. Baker!) Biking at this altitude is crazy - we had to stop about every 20 seconds to catch our breath . What was supposed to be a short day took us hours!

First day bike touring in Ecuador 🇪🇨 🚵‍♀️
I've just started travelling through Ecuador! After spending a couple of days in Quito, @hanfigs and I started our bike tour of the Quilotoa loop yesterday. Biking through the Andes is spectacular 💫

One of the craziest hunts I've seen - we arrived on scene just as the group of Bigg's orca we had planned to see started hunting. Just as I was trying to figure out what they were after, we saw them fling a harbour porpoise straight into the air! I thought I had missed the moment on camera, but luckily they did it again and I managed to get this shot. It was incredible to see these animals hunt in such a spectacular way, and all the celebrating that followed was an added bonus.

There are a couple of different reasons an Orca might breach - in this case it was a celebration after a pretty impressive kill!

Aquatic acrobatics 🤸‍♀️
It's not often that you get a good view of an orca fluke (tail). While flukes are usually used to identify humpback whales, we use dorsal fins and saddle patches (the white part behind the dorsal fin) for orcas.

One of my fave pics from the season 👅
Timber rafts like this are popular hang outs for harbour seals - you can sometimes even see them hitching rides while the logs are being transported 😆

Say hello to Blackberry! (J27) This 26 year old male is a very distinctive member of J pod from his tall dorsal fin and striking saddle patch. He is one of the Southern Resident orcas, which are critically endangered with only 76 individuals in their total breeding population.

Sep 26 - it's always special when the whales decide to pass right by the boat. You can tell this is a male from the huge dorsal fin. These can reach up to 6ft tall! (Almost 2 metres) - it's actually kind of intimidating up close.

Seeing a humpback whale breach is a pretty incredible experience. They can be up to 16m long and weigh up to 36 tonnes!
This day was incredibly smoky because of the wildfires but we managed to get an amazing view of this mother and her calf playing around on their way North.

Heading in to Howe Sound is a great place to spot bald eagles, we were lucky enough to have this one fly right above the boat! 🦅

Stellar's Buoy (2/2)
A great example of some of the action that goes down on these buoys. It gets especially heated when someone tries to jump back on 😅

Stellar's Buoy (1/2)
Throughout the summer you can see juvenile male Stellar Sea Lions congregated on buoys like this one. There is almost always some aggressive behaviour to be seen as they compete for such a small space (obviously this guy won). -

July 4th - Another T-party!
We caught up with this large group of Bigg's in Boundary Pass on a clear day, it really felt like Mt Baker was right in front of us. -

August 21st - A gorgeous calm day where we encountered multiple families (about 20-30 whales) of Bigg's Orca in the middle of the straight. The whale in the centre is called Rocky III, a 38 year old matriarch, and her daughter Volker (23) is just to the left of her. •
