This year, I’ve had the great fortune to take part in some radio tracking studies of threatened and endangered species here in New Jersey. This study will help give us a better understanding of these animals and their habitat. While I’m just a small piece of this, I take it very seriously and I’m extremely grateful to be a part of it.

On Thanksgiving, it’s hard to ignore the fact that we’re living on stolen land. It was taken centuries ago by the ancestors of most of us living here. But what can we do?

Maybe, at very least, we try to protect the land from destruction and pollution. Maybe we can be good stewards of the land for all the natural creatures that remain on it and were here long before we were. I’m not always perfect at this, but I’m trying to help and have been afforded a great opportunity to do so. And for that I am thankful.

Full size bars. A Scarpulla house Halloween tradition. Plus I got these other giant ones off to the side for extra awesome costumes. Ya know, in case someone shows up dressed as Don Mattingly or Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat or Jello Biafra or a snake or some shit.

I've heard of the female praying mantis who savagely devours her mate shortly after copulation, but this is the first time I've witnessed it. This was an amazing experience to see. Wildlife is all around us. Get out there and see something extraordinary!

Here's one of my favorite observations of the year so far...

The left photo was taken in June. It's a gravid female Eastern Hognose Snake excavating a nest chamber to lay its eggs. It took her over 3 days to dig this nest in the sweltering heat!

The right photo is one of the many newly hatched snakes from this nest! Several weeks later, I came upon this individual right as it emerged through the soil and made its way to the surface. These eggs hatch underground and sometimes the opening to these chambers get covered over from hard rains and wind during summer storms, so these little ones uses their upturned snouts as a shovel to dig their way directly to the surface. Very cool!

Also, I'd be remiss to mention this... This nesting area was being directly run over by negligent off-road vehicles last year. Although still in the vicinity, they have fortunately not been using this exact area this year.

Gorgeous little Chain King from this weekend. Probably a yearling.

Kingsnakes will eat rodents, eggs, lizards and nearly anything it can overtake, but it's propensity to eat other snakes (including venomous species) is what makes it the king.

The "Coastal Plain" Milk Snake is a gorgeous, colorful snake that is highly sought after by collectors and often illegally poached from its natural habitat. I love these creatures and I cherish every encounter I have with one, but I'll never understand one's desire to take it out of its beautiful home and put it in a glass box.

To be clear, I have no problem with responsible reptile keepers (though not for me), but the impact of taking wild animals can be devastating to fragile populations. If you witness someone taking reptiles from the wild or see suspicious activity, report it to state park police or conservation officers.

This exceptional Coastal was the nicest I'd ever seen; from earlier this year.

Here's a cute juvenile spadefoot toad found in the road from a rainy night last week in The Pines. These secretive creatures are a rare treat and I never take them for granted. This is 1 of 8 species of Anura found in the road that night; yet another reason The Pine Barrens should be cherished and protected.
