3 days straight of sun up to sundown driving without getting in the water.  Sideways rain and wind on a forecast that looked completely different.  With a bit of persistence, patience, and Rob behind the wheel leading the minivan full of boards and cameras we got our break.  No one ever said it was going to be easy, but the best things never are.  We drove through a few gates on the 4th day and were met with sunshine and this long left point.  Rob and Craig surfed by themselves until their arms couldn’t paddle any more.  Came in and surfed again just before dark for that nice evening light that makes every photographer excited to shoot.  Once the trip was over, we’d ended up driving during all of the storms and shooting in sunlight.  Great for the gear, not so good for the Winter feel we were going for.  A month later we dropped everything and reconvened in the far north of Japan chasing a storm that turned into a blizzard.  We spent another 3 days driving around in near whiteout conditions trying to find a corner to surf. We did, kind of... At the time, patience is tested, but looking back, these are the memories that make us want to do it again!! Most people don’t like long-form instagram messages, but I kind of do.  It’s a place for storytelling both visually and with words.

In the next couple of weeks, I’ll be doing a few slideshows with stories from the making of the film and book Proximity.  The next one is tomorrow in San Clemente at the Surfing Heritage museum.  If you’re around, we’d love to see you there and share the stories behind the images.

This series of images were made three years ago on the very first trip for Proximity. We'd been skunked on the first two days that were meant to be the biggest. Anticipation was high and morale was starting to dwindle as our crew had flown halfway around the world on a very short notice in hopes of scoring waves in a location none of us had been. The first shot was made with my Leica and 35mm lens on Tri-X film. I call it my coffee drinking camera, it never leaves my neck when we're on trips or cruising around town. It's small, light, and probably the most fun camera I've ever shot with. Not to mention the images come out really nice. Inspired by many of the photographers before me who have shot their whole careers with a setup like that makes my back cringe knowing the amount of gear we travel with to shoot the lifestyle and the action from both the land and water as seen in the following shots. Along with the film that is now available on iTunes I've made a coffee table book and am setting up dates to share the book and stories behind them in a slideshow format. Our next one is this Saturday at the @surfingheritage in San Clemente followed by another slideshow hosted by the APA at the @mopasd on the 28th. If you're around would love to see you there. This set of images feature @shanedorian , , @taylorsteele and for those who haven't seen the film, @wizardlovesbeer was the DP for this section with @intl_tanimal in the water. #proximityfilm #bwphotochallenge
Music has always played a huge inspiration in not only making images but how it can set the vibe to a room, trip, or even an edit. While working with Taylor on the Pre-Production of Proximity the idea came up to shoot individual portraits of each one of the surfers in a controlled environment that could be recreated anywhere we were. Inspired by The Rolling Stones album “Hot Rocks.” We made this series of images of the entire cast of Proximity shot in each of the four different seasons and trips we shot. These images went on to be used as the introduction to each of the four chapters of the book followed by their original signatures. This month we are doing a series of slideshows discussing sets of images like this as well as many others from the trip. The next one is in San Clemente this Saturday at the Surfing Heritage Museum. If you’re near San Clemente, please join us!

We're always thinking of new ways to show and share the excitement of the Surf Ranch. This was the first wave after lunch and I don't know who was more stoked. 11 year old @jackson_dorian , his dad @shanedorian watching on or Jacksons Godfather @kellyslater. Anyway you put it, there's a lot of stoke in this photo!! @kswaveco

Watching these two share a session at the Surf Ranch was one of the most exciting days of surfing I've ever had the privilege to watch. Jackson rode what very easily could have been the best waves of his life while his dad Shane surfed and watched on along with close family and friends. Sitting on the sidelines watching this session with my camera was so cool. It's crazy to see the similarities in their approach to the wave and their sheer excitement for surfing. If you haven't seen the edit of them surfing from the @kswaveco definitely check it out!! @jackson_dorian @shanedorian @kellyslater

It was almost 3 years ago to the day that we started filming for Proximity. We were in the furthest Northern reaches of Europe with @shanedorian and along with our film crew on the hunt to find a wave that was something none of the guys had surfed before in addition to something that would get these guys excited. The first two days which were supposed to be the biggest were flat. Not surfable. Whenever you commit to making a project especially with multiple people involved it’s hard not to consider what the time away while on the search for these sessions can be. Missing birthdays, holidays, family time are all really important. With Proximity we did our best to consider all of the elements that were involved with the film. The location, the surfers, the artists the surfers partnered with for their board art, the DP (we had a different one for each trip except for the Wizard and Alejandro who came twice!). Once you have your crew set, location found, surfers schedules free, a swell on the radar, it’s go time! On paper it sounds great, but it doesn’t always work out like that. Fortunately we had @nathan_myers who was our human swiss army knife that was not only conducting interviews and keeping the vibes up, he was working with @outsidetv in making an 8 episode TV series on the making of Proximity. If you get a chance, be sure to check it out and see what it’s like to be in the water as we film, sit in a pub with Shane and Albee, and watch as Taylor and I try to figure out what to do when the swell doesn’t show!! When can we do this again??? @taylorsteele

Sometimes some of the best waves can be found not too far from home especially when Southern California has had such a classic run of Fall conditions. @nickmarshall3, @taylorclark_ ,and I had planned on meeting at the beach at 6am this day, he text me at 5:30 asking if I wanted a coffee, he was frothing. We all were. Here's Nick on a medium sized set a few days ago. With as much traveling as we are fortunate to do, I've made a rule that I'll only shoot the first and last hour of light when I'm home so I can get a few waves too. Weird rule I know, but it out of Flames handbook. Hahaha. Shoot less, make it count, don't waste film so we can surf more! Fisheye tube not far from home. @surfer_magazine

Not really sure what to say besides thank you. I've been so fortunate to watch the Surf Ranch go from dirt to this incredible wave that goes left and right! This video is from the very first left that I got to ride. Shaking and nervous were an understatement when I heard it was my turn. There are too many people to thank, but I'll start with Kelly, Hunter, and Raimana including the incredible staff and water safety team. You know who you are. Here are a few images from our trip up north. If you see me, pinch me...I'm still dreaming. Enjoy! #bestweekever @kswaveco @kellyslater @jenna_glaser

Excerpt from Winter chapter of Proximity the Book with @craig__anderson and @rob_machado ---------------------------------------------------
CRAIG: I’ve had some pretty fun waves in my time.
ROB: Do you remember one?
CRAIG: The most fun I’ve had is always on days that are just super novelty, or when you feel a feeling that you haven’t felt before on a certain board, or you’re around good friends. It’s just about the headspace you’re in. Every session there’s always a couple waves that feel real good.
ROB: I think a big part of it is the environment. CRAIG: Yeah, just with your friends. ----------------------------------------------------

ROB:It was cool to get psyched for this trip and make boards and think about the waves we were going to be riding. It's not just another trip. I have a whole new outlook. I come to a place and really take it in way more than I used to.

CRAIG: Yeah. I'd like to relate to that. I kind of can, but the last five or 10 years, I've been frantically traveling around and it's hard to take it all in.

ROB:Yeah, it's cool coming back to a place like this. We know what we're getting into. The potential of waves here is just kind of endless, but there's so many factors. When we had first got here, we had crazy weather and wind and big swell and we couldn't even surf.
CRAIG: Doesn't get easier; surfing. But I feel like that's half the fun. I enjoy surfing, but as much as I enjoy riding a wave, I like just hanging out and sitting in the car park.

A couple pages from the Proximity book shot in the studio of @studioparadisenyc who worked tirelessly in designing and working with a photographer who was in and out of airports and the water during the whole process. A big thank you goes out to them and all of the surfers who believed in both the book and #proximityfilm. The films out on ITunes now and the books still available by clicking on the link in my bio!

Usually I'm not one to post photos of mini waves but I just came in from swimming at sunrise this morning with my phone and was able to make this image not less than 30 minutes ago. It's pretty fun to be able to shoot and share in such a short amount of time every once in awhile. Thanks for letting me borrow your phone housing Zak. Heart shaped lip this morning.
