🙌🏽 some of my most favorite gifts have been used treasures and jewels from dear friends who know what I love. Things don't need to have wrappers or tags to have value. Look at your house: what's inside of it that could make someone feel really special? Look at your jewelry collection: what could be cleaned up, wrapped up, and passed along? .

I have a new winter self-care zine coming out in just a few days.... I'm releasing it as part of an exclusive collaboration with @siobhanaleabarrett lingerie.... so stay tuned. The zine has recipes, book suggestions for winter coziness, and of course lots of writings by yours truly about winter, darkness, magic, and the solstice. 🖤

Every single year, I write something about how Fall is my favorite season because it brings with it an unforgiving wind of change, resolution, and clarity. I will spare you the Falling Leaves Metaphor. But here we are again at the tail end of a relentless, beautiful Autumn, and I find myself living it all over again: The ending, in preparation for the beginning.
I put a link in my profile for a couple days to a piece I wrote a while back about benefitting from these Autumnal vibes. 🍂 Enjoy it, and may your own transitions be laced with gold.

About 10 years ago, inspired by a friend, I adopted a daily study/practice of Radical Honesty. It was and is one of my primary systems of belief and of guidance. Radical Honesty makes me feel safe and secure in a world that is always moving and changing. And I will say that Radical Honesty has served me incredibly well! I still work on it every day.
However, now that I'm a decade into that practice, I'm feeling pretty good about it. It's habitual, structural, and deeply ingrained, so I don't have to think about it so much. And then, just the other day, I was inspired again: Up next? Radical Acceptance.
I have a lot to learn on this one and truth be told I'm kind of a beginner. I don't even know how to define it all the way yet. But I know that by declaring it and opening up to it, I'll start to learn about it... and hopefully 10 years from now I'll feel just as well-practiced in it as I do with Radical Honesty.
So, wish me luck: the decade of Radical Acceptance. Just in time for my child growing way up and my hair sprouting silvers and the world spinning ever-onward, waiting for no one to catch up. 💛

These #buttecountybeauty shirts are soft and sweet and I'm happy to report that they keep selling out at @madeinchico. I'll be bringing another batch of them in this week to restock them.
I'm also thankful to office mate who had her photog @_mattlim_ take a few shots of these shirts when they were doing a photoshoot a while back. Thank you both so much!

Happy belated birthday to this baby queen who helps me when I need it, feeds me when I'm sad, and listens when I'm figuring it all out. I've laid by pools, oceans and rivers with this girl and we've hiked in foothills and tropics and it's always the same: love, learning, laughter. Her golden birthday was yesterday and I'm so happy that as she gets older, our friendship does, too. I love you Karoline May!

A little late in the week/day, but I posted last week's newsletter on my blog for anyone who didn't get a chance to see it. It's called "I am not my Instagram" and don't worry, the irony of sharing it here is not lost on me. Head to my profile to read it, and here's an excerpt:
"We have so many options now: This and that, Slow or fast. Town mouse country mouse. Daily we scroll through an endless menu of options, and everyone else’s options. Wait! We think. Should I move to a tropical island and live in wild abandon? Should I move to the big city and work harder than ever to achieve My Dream? Is My Dream the right dream? Should I cook more, craft more, knit more, curate more, camp more? Did I miss the boat? Is there more than one boat?
To ponder it all is stressful, to say the least. I know it’s been said over and over, but I find it to be so important and true: Turn off the phone. Put it down. Turn off your notifications. Don’t let email dings and comment pings interrupt your dinners and your dates. Don’t let them steal your gaze from your children. Don’t let them (the dings, not the children) sneak into your bedroom, between the sheets."

I stayed out past 8 tonight, which is very rare! If you know me, you know this. It was fun to finally wear high heels again though. 👠#chikoko2017 #chikoko

It's Friday and I am so feeling the TGIF. Also very very happy that it rained last night. Also very very happy about persimmon/pomegranate season....which reminds me: did you get my newsletter today? That's right, I finally sent one out. It felt good to write it and it all poured out of me late the other night while everyone was sleeping. Oh, and I talk about pomegranates and persimmons in it, sort of. . .
Also if you didn't get it and would love to read it, let me know and I can send it to you. And if you would like to get on my list, you can go to my website and subscribe at the bottom of the page.

Last print run I had to use white card stock for the cover because I ran out of the kraft brown. I only have 2 left and I colored one and made the moons glittery because who can resist a glittery moon, right? .
Want one? Hey you can even color it on your own so that it's custom. It's pretty fun. Head to my site and click on "Track Your Cycle."

Loving this new account I found // @theconsciouskid 🌈 and I couldn't agree more: I think books are an essential tool for empowerment and inspiration. Did you know that reading The Secret Garden made me want to go away to boarding school, and then when I was 16, I did?? Books are such a big part of who I am. Sometimes I actually have to remind myself to pull my head out of the pages and pay attention to this sweet life I'm living. .

"Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights”

Today is International #dayofthegirl. This image is of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl who broke a traditional taboo against female drummers. Read her story--gorgeously illustrated by Rafael Lopez-- in "Drum Dream Girl" by Margarita Engle. It is featured on our Latinx Heritage book list: Ages 4-8.

"White Americans have a short memory." (Sherman Alexie)

Did you know I didn't learn about *actual* Christoper Columbus until COLLEGE? My freshman year I took a class that taught me the whole history of the United States and I was like, "ohhh, that's why high school history class was so confusing." Because they were leaving so much out. In 3rd grade I learned that "all the Indians just died," and in 7th grade a teacher tried to convey to me the concept of Manifest Destiny, which I could never wrap my brain around. The reason I couldn't wrap my brain around it is because it's impossible to explain such a concept without also addressing genocide and entitlement, at the very least.

I'm happy this day is being reclaimed by and large to honor the indigenous people of this land.
