There is only one. Be it New York City 🗽or Yosemite 🏞there is only one. The frenetic energy of the city is a source of energy for human potential and coexistence. It’s also a bit out of my element. Yosemite inspires and provides balance to this global urban hub. Magnificent when viewed through the prism of history.
If you are in town I’ll be @thenorthface retail location 👉🏽 510 5th Avenue 👈🏼 between 2 and 4 on Friday 17 November 2017. Stop by for free posters and a happy hello. Looking forward to the mini meet up.

Friday night I’ll be presenting with @jimmy_chin at the @the_explorers_club We’ll be sharing stories about climbing with the Sherpa of Nepal and our connection to the @khumbuclimbingcenter.

The incredibly solid Thomas Huber in a sea of granite on the West Face of Latok II (7108m), Karakoram.
We established Tsering Mosong (Balti for long life) in the summer of 1997 along with his brother Alex and Toni Gutsch. The weather was nice that season. We had luck with flying rocks. They missed us. #fbf

@margojain sent La Rambla, a demanding rock climb. In the process she opened up the most difficult grades for female climbers around the world. Check into her story in this year’s @reelrock and get inspired. Thanks to @Roam for the tidy clip. @thenorthface_climb @petzl_official

Still Life. Small detail from the inside of the back door of “Sweet Mellisa”, Hayden Kennedy’s sprinter van. A collection of art that shines light into what Hayden valued in life. The stickers: the American Alpine Club reflects community; wild...iris connects to Inge Perkins, the love of his life; Avery Brewing, obvious; Randy Rakliff art on a Climbing mag decal, suffering; Patagonia, the brand that supported Hayden on his adventures; Enormocast, his ability to communicate and his friendship with the esteemed Mr Kalous & Edelweiss, for the ropes that connect the tribe.

The image is of is of Thalay Sagar, a Himalayan peak that Michael, his father, and Randy Trover climbed BITD. Respect for his parents.
Thank you Julie and Michael for the gathering that brought healing to family and friends.
We miss you Inge and Hayden.

With respect.

Fred Beckey.
Fred was always curious. He always asked where the next climb was or if conditions in some far off place were "in". Keeping his finger on the pulse of the scene, for which he was the grand mentor, kept him young for years.
No one will ever match the first ascents and new routes that spanned the decades, ranges and types of rock as Fred. He certainly left his mark. May we celebrate the quintessential Fred rating of 5.9 A2. Hard enough to keep us on our toes, vague enough to pardon the sandbag and full of untold mystery. "How did Fred climb this with six pitons and goldline?" Thanks Fred for bearing the torch; the light from which we all benefitted. (1923-2017) 94 amazing years. 📷 91 Anchorage, AK; 07 Smith Rock; 17 Seattle AAC

Dougal Haston on the summit of Everest. 24 September 1975. Photo by the venerable Doug Scott.
After climbing the Southwest Face Dougal and Doug made it to the summit as the sun set. They later endured an unplanned bivouac at the South Summit. Makalu on the horizon is cloaked in monsoon snow.

Dougal’s smile says it all.

This is Art, the Obi Wan of the Bozeman, MT cycling community. Art is the force behind the @bozemanbikekitchen, a non profit dedicated to making the use of bicycles as transportation in our valley. Bring your ride in and rent a stand with tools for $8 an hour, purchase a variety of parts or refurbished bikes and get advice from the patient team of bike mechanics. It's one of the coolest community projects around. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Art helped my get a "new" seat for my '90 Specialized Hard Rock and dialed the shifters so that they work much smoother. Think I'm sticking with the original paint as it is bound to be back in style one of these days. Open Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8 pm and Saturday 10 am - Noon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stable Cat. 😺 Thanks to our feline companions for keeping the mice at bay, warming the horse blankets and keeping calm. To be as cool as a stable cat. That's my goal.

Photo by @gordonwiltsie - Summit of Rakekniven, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica • 3 January 1997
Gordon shared this sleeper image as we are preparing for a return to Queen Maud Land 21 years later. Our team included Rick Ridgeway, @graberproductions , @krakauernotwriting and the late #alexlowe. Free climbing the Snow Petrel Wall will be one of the goals of this year's expedition. Climbers are stronger and gear is lighter, yet the goal of a climb - a happy embrace on the summit - will always remain the most powerful part of any journey. Here is to the future.

Not too many years ago livestock was used for transport and agriculture. With the mechanization and urbanization of civilization we don't have as much of a direct connection, pets aside, to animals. Western Sports involve animals, the type we eat and ride. Rodeo, with its many disciplines, is part of cowboy culture. Life out on the range can be hard. This lesson of being part of the food chain is part of the ethos that frame rodeo sports. The one discipline that embodies the physicality of rodeo is bull riding.
The Pro Bull Riders @pbr aim to ride a bucking and spinning bull for 8 seconds. The bull wants nothing more than to rid him self of the rider and the rider wants nothing more than to control the angry bull. Weighing in at around 1800 pounds the bulls are specifically bred for tossing young men off of their backs. With names like "Fender Bender", "Swervin Mervin" and "Smooth Operator" these animals mean business. When @meatchurch asked if I would rather go back to Everest or ride a bull I figured 8 seconds of misery and a hard fall is better than 8 weeks of misery in the ice fall.
In this clip @derek_kolbaba goes for a wild ride. Thanks @yeti for the invite and @craighummer good to catch up.

The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. @thenorthface

Yosemite has a magnetic draw.
The towering trees, roaring waterfalls and fierce cliffs create a landscape to refill one's soul.
We thrive on being outdoors. Sleeping under the stars awakens us to life. 🏞🏞🏞
