Baskin [d. Can Evrenol]
.
A squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building.
.
7/10 - This felt like a short film stretched out to 97 minutes without added value. But the actual scenes of horror you do get treated with are great/scary/grotesque depictions of the director's vision of hell. The cinematography is also on point and makes each crazy happenstance beautifully ugly.

V/H/S
[d. Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, Radio Silence]
8/10

V/H/S is a great horror anthology. I find the second one to be the best of the series though. "Tuesday The 17th" and "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger" are my favorite segments.

Piranha (2010)
[d. Alexandre Aja]
8/10

Plays out like Jaws during Spring Break, with the gore turned all the way up. A lot of it is ridiculously over the top and some of the cg have not aged well, but a ton of the practical effects are impressive. A fun movie to watch with a bunch of friends.

I enjoyed Severance more on my first viewing when it initially came out, but it's still a fun little flick. Not as much comedy as it advertises but still has its moments.

One of my absolute favorites that came out not too long ago. Fede Alverez takes everything crazy about the original Evil Dead and turns it up to 11. October Movie #31. And only at the midway point for the month. Here's to 31 more. Lofty goals. Bwahahahah!

The Fog
[d. John Carpenter]

I didn't grow up with this movie so no nostalgia factor here. Carpenters music is always a delight, but I'm not big on ghost stories. Much prefer gore, creature effects, monsters, and some wtf craziness.

Rumah Dara / Macabre

8/10

Needed a change of scenery from the babysitter horror comedies of recent so went straight to the other end with Mo Brothers infamous Macabre. One brutal, visceral, bloody film. Need something crazy? Well, here you go.

Better Watch Out [d. Chris Peckover]
.
On a quiet suburban street, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from intruders, only to discover it's far from a normal home invasion.
.
7/10 - A perfect match for a double feature with Netflix's The Babysitter. I actually liked this one better though.

Happy Death Day [d. Christopher Landon]
.
A college student relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer's identity.
.
6/10 - Groundhogs Day as a horror movie. Literally. Cool concept but I absolutely hated the main character. I know that was the point, but it didn't help with the enjoyment of the movie. Overall though, the concept was fun and not bad for a PG-13 horror flick.
