It's already getting dark at 6, and I didn't even make it out camping yet.

There aren't better role models in this world than these two. At age 80, both of my grandparents have survived cancer and strokes. The stroke took away much of my grandmother's (mummi's) mobility while the medication my grandfather (ukki) was taking resulted in retinal toxicity, rendering him nearly blind.

Nonetheless, the two of them continue to live independently and simply in a way that surpasses 99% of able bodied adults I know today-- self included. They continue to go on daily walks to their community garden plot where they grow much of the produce they eat. Ukki, who can no longer drive due to his poor vision, rides his bicycle to the market to get the remainder of their groceries, and a close network of friends, family, and neighbors is there help them when assistance is needed.

Nothing is wasted in their household, not a morsel of food nor a watt of energy. True exemplars of sustainable living, no quality of life is sacrificed by living this way. Their unbridled happiness proves that consumption is not the key to a good and fulfilling life. Rather, happiness is derived from appreciating the intrinsic items surrounding you and not focusing on what you lack. Nature, community, family, and friendship are invaluable assets, and the preservation of such should be held above any of the modern amenities that we are told we need.
I encourage everyone to try to and live like Jouko and Tuula.

Happy Father's Day to the core-est of all locs. Thanks for teaching me the fastest way to get to the upper mountain on a powder day, the proper technique for ducking ropes, and most importantly-- the importance of leaving no turn unstoned. Cheers dadio, I wouldn't be the guy I am today without you.
