Updating my portfolio and finding so many old favorites. This bouquet from @laurenk_anderson's wedding is so simple, and one of the most elegant I've ever photographed. Of course I'd expect nothing less from the @sweetrootvillage team!!

Atmosphere has such an impact on mood, focus, and productivity. My home office or Starbucks works fine for my normal day-to-day work, but when I have any kind of writing or thought work to do, I retreat to a coffee shop / work space with more comfort and a calming effect. When I have yearly planning to do, I prefer to work from the @ngadc or the @smithsoniannpg.

Where do you do your best work?
October is to wedding photographers what April is to accountants.

I read something earlier this week about how social media is a funny beast- when you post a lot you look busy, but when you’re truly busy, you rarely have time to post. ALL THE YES.
.
Super busy over here shooting & editing 2017 weddings, while planning for 2018 and working on a website refresh. Aka, the coffee is flowing freely!!
.
If you’re in my boat, I lift my white ceramic cup of dark roast with perfect foam crema to you in solidarity. Happy Monday, friends.

My thoughts precisely.

Absolutely heartbroken over tragic news of violence in #LasVegas and #Marseilles. Praying for grace and comfort for those who grieve, and wisdom for government and law enforcement to protect those in their care.
My friend @starbucks just emailed me that today is National Coffee Day, but that's EVERY DAY in my book. Just brewed a new cup, and am settling in to read a chapter in my current book before getting on with the day.
.
What's your coffee drink of choice these days? I'm a forever-fan of an americano with heavy cream!
.
Also, fun fact: Buck and I love coffee so much that we incorporated it into as many wedding details as possible. We had a brunch reception, so it was easy! My favorite was our guestbook- we wanted a coffee-themed coffee table book for guests to sign, but couldn't find one, so we asked all of our photographer friends to share their coffee photos with us and we made our own. I love it so much!

Spent part of this morning working on publication submission. Details are what editors look for in submissions, and I won't deny how much I love shooting them— but it's helpful to remember they're not the main storyline of the wedding day. They're just small supporting cast members. Not unimportant, but also not essential.
.
It's so easy to get lost in the details during the planning phase, but remember that your MARRIAGE is the most important thing to plan for. Let the wedding day (and all the details that go into it) stay in it's proper place as number two on the priority list.

Congrats, Wilson & Le-Anh! Thanks for the privilege of capturing your day!
.
(I shoot most of my weddings in the city, so don't often get the chance to slip outside for sunset photos! Last night was SUCH a treat!!)

Happy wedding day, Wilson & Le-Anh!! Can't wait to photograph your wedding!!
That perfect September light. Taylor & @emlycl, how has it been two years already??
.
After two months off of shooting (weddings, that is), I'm beyond ready to jump into my Fall wedding season tomorrow at @raspberryplainmanor!

This is me and my husband/best friend Buck at a rehearsal dinner a couple of weeks ago. We took a selfie partly because we were out, dressed up, and sans kiddo (🙌🏻), but MOSTLY because hearing speeches about marriage make us love being married even more than we already do. We LITERALLY listened to a speech, said "Awwwwwww," kissed each other, and took a selfie because we were feeling inspired and in love and thankful for our marriage. We're super sappy like that, and I love it.

It's not a perfect, it doesn't represent my work, but it DOES represent the heart behind what I do. So I don't care that it's not perfect- it's PERFECTLY US, which is even better.
.
Confession: sometimes Instagram (/ all of social media) is just too overwhelming to be enjoyable. I started using Instagram because it was FUN. I enjoyed giving friends & family & clients a peek into my normal, everyday life, and seeing a glimpse into theirs. These days, though, it's mostly just stressful.
.
Apart from the perceived obligation to constantly beat stupid algorithms (which is stressful enough), when did everyone life become so perfectly styled and curated? I absolutely ADORE my life, but it is NOT pretty all the time. 😂🙈🤦🏻‍♀️

Let's get back to finding beauty in simple, everyday life. And being okay with grainy, dark photos. #fridayintroductions #warbyparkercouple
I'm learning a lot about learning these days. Being "in the know" is popular, not being "in the know" is uncomfortable, sometimes even painful.
.
But In an effort to be in “in the know,” I think many of us have ceased learning. We collect systems and “how-to manuals,” download free guides right and left, and pass around information from one self-taught creative to another, stacking our mental bookshelves full of answers without actually doing to work of LEARNING.
.
For many of us, we’re not learning, we’re just erasing that uncomfortable feeling of “I don’t know” as quickly as possible.
.
But here’s the thing: the “not knowing” is necessary. As @jenwilkin says, "The first sign that learning is about to take place is when we feel the extent of what we do not know".
