Last Tuesday, when vegan activist @jamesaspey came to speak at U of T, the 110-seat auditorium filled up nearly an hour early. Desperate for a spot after work, I raced through the subway station parkour-style at rush hour (since we're all friends here, I'll admit this included slithering like a snail under a broken turnstile, backpack and all). I got there to find my classmates already crowded by the door and piled up high on the stairs. An overflow room was created to watch the talk via live stream... Then that one filled, too, and we needed a third one. I'm so proud of the growing vegan and sustainable presence on campus, and was buzzing all night after! A huge thank you to @vegclubuoft for organizing an event I heard was life-changing for many people there.
Days like today also remind me just how normalized the movement is becoming. I hopped over to a friend's for a big vegan breakfast (@chely.bean 💗) and then went to an all-vegan holiday market, sharing butterscotch chocolate and earl grey macarons under garlands of Christmas lights. It left me glowing.
Veganism in the US has increased 600% since 2014. An estimated 7% of Americans and 10% of Germans are now vegan or vegetarian. The word 'vegan' saw a 90% spike in Google searches last year, and 25% of Canadians polled were trying to eat less meat. BlogTO declared 'plant-based' the Toronto food trend of the year, and new veg spots seem to be popping up in the city each week! The world will need to make some tough environmental decisions in the decades to come, but watching this lifestyle enter the mainstream leaves me hopeful for the future of our planet.

So I think I just jokingly convinced my boyfriend that I want him to get me the $1000 @tiffanyandco Everyday Objects tin can for Christmas. I asked him to make me a tofu bolognese in it and now he's not replying to me. Help 😹

Tomorrow, Florian flies back to Vienna and I sit chained to my desk for the entirety of reading week, so I'll hold onto the past 24 hours instead. I'll remember a six-hour walk around the city, choking down whiskey in an old bookshop, the excitement of my first Christmas shopping, the dimly lit jazz bar and austere room above it, tea at 3am in a rambunctious McDonalds, morning brunch and convoluted stories, and finally, ogling some seriously fine antiquarian books at the AGO!
