Big appreciation post for the best guy ever.
My Ludwig Black Beauty is probably the best investment to recording i've ever made. Whenever drummers come into the studio and we do some snare shoot outs we always end up agreeing that this is the snare to go with. Come to think of it, the only record I haven't put it on since I got it was the @classicallyhandsomebrutes EP we tracked in the summer, and that was only because I was so excited to try the Ludwig LM400 at the studio out!

Whether it's cranked up to an F sharp and super ringy like we used it on the brilliant @coffeebreathuk record, or lower down and Splatty tuned to a C on the Vogons EP, it always retains a thuddy lower midrange and super bright, smacky top end that helps it cut through distorted guitars. Love you pal x
Drummer and engineer pals, what snare should I get that i'll love as much as this guy? I'm thinking about trying to pick up a 70s acrolite!

I have spaces to come to the studio and play with drums and guitars over the next few months, come help me try beat the Black Beauty!

Last week I had the pleasure of engineering some drums for a record that my good pal @jaggysnakez was producing. This was a really cool change of pace - Harry and the band had stuff in mind that they wanted out of the drum tracks, and I set up all the mics and gear in a way that best suited their vision. V fun day!

There was a load of amazing gear for me to play with, so I tried to use as much EQ and compression on the way in as I could, so Harry had as little work to do as possible when it came for him to mix it (without totally painting him into a corner sonics wise). I tried these API 550A EQs on kick and snare and totally loved them. Both got a little boost at 7K to open up the top end a little, some 400Hz taken out to get rid of some boxiness and some bottom end added at 50Hz on the kick and 200Hz on the snare. These EQS sound so good, tracking with processing is hella fun.
Band dudes! I have space open for tracking, mixing, mastering and remote drum tracking from October onwards. Let's make a record together!

Slowly but surely we're getting the vocals tracked for the new @classicallyhandsomebrutes record, and i'm really pleased with the way they're coming together so far.
We're spending as long as we possibly can on vocal arrangement for each track, making sure every line of vocal we add impacts the production in a positive way. I think sometimes it's easy to neglect vocals as they're the easiest thing to physically record during a tracking process, but doing this has really helped the record to come together in a way we're all way more pleased with.
I'm really stoked on the way they're sounding, too. We've done some of the vocals at the studios in the University of Huddersfield where Harry's studying, and there's a load of rad gear I get to play with while i'm there. Whenever possible I really like to track vocals with some compression to help them to be more "record ready" when I come to mix. In this case I got to use a lovely Universal Audio 1176LN, which works super well for really levelling out aggressive vocal performances. I've got the release at pretty much the fastest setting, and the attack at a medium speed to shave some transient without backing me into a corner when i'm mixing. With the settings I had I was getting between 3 and 7db of gain reduction.

Here's my full vocal chain of hella nice gear I was really excited to use:

Neumann U87 - API 312 - UA 1176 LN - Line in of an SSL AWS 924 console.

Engineer pals, do you like doing compression on the way in when you're tracking, or do you like leaving it to the mix stage?

Today i've been mastering three songs for my scuzzy pals @badideauk, that were engineered and mixed by my other pal @jacksbyrne! Total mates fest.

When i'm mastering, I sometimes like to use different kinds of EQs for different tasks. I'll always start off with my favourite super clean Fabfilter Pro Q2 in linear phase mode for any filtering, M/S processing and notch kind of stuff, but on some masters I follow this up with something a little more colourful.
A few months ago Soundtoys brought out the SIE-Q, and it slays for broad, brush stroke-esque EQ for masters and mix busses (I love it on guitars and overheads, too!), and i've found just a touch of it can go a long way. Jack did a great job with the mix of these songs so i'm only using it for a small boost in the bottom end to bring out a little more chunk in the kick and bass, and a 0.5db boost at 700Hz to bring out some more cool midrange from the guitars.
I love this EQ so much - engineer pals, what more colourful sounding EQs do you like to use on mix busses/masters? I've been meaning to pick up the Kush Clariphonic for a while for this purpose, do you guys love it?

Double day today! I'm finishing off some mixes tonight for a live session we did with Tom from Hora @horadouse and i'm mastering a house song for my good pal Naoi during the day! Here's a super nerdy post about some new stuff i'm doing with it.

I've been trying to up my mastering game recently by trying out new things and i'm so stoked with this new technique I tried out today - this one's definitely going to stick! I always have multiple stages of saturation on a master to create a sense of depth, usually with a console sim like Slate VCC/VTC, and Slate VTM. Today i've gone one step further by adding another tape saturator to my chain - Fabfilter Saturn on the clean tape patch.
This sounds a hell of a lot different to the Slate VTM. Where VTM is pretty scooped adding harmonics to the lower and upper mids, the clean tape on Saturn is much more hifi, adding a nice amount of sub information and making the top end really glassy. The two work so well together, and did a great job of adding excitement in the top and bottom registers of this fairly midrangey mix. I'm stoked with how it's sounding, it's meant i've had to do far less EQing than I usually would!

I've got two weekends free for recording in September (15th-17th + 29th-1st) and i'm taking bookings from October, too. Let's make a record together!

I've been on holiday in Turkey for a wedding this week with @fleecexlightning and it's been dope. I've been trying not to think about work but every time I walk through this lobby I go "fuck, how cool would it be to record drums in here" (the ceilings so high I couldn't even get it in the photo!) 🌚
This week I had so much fun doing two remote drum sessions, and I loved the way the Mapex Orion kick at the studio was sounding so much that I decided to make a sample of it to share with you guys.
It's got a tonne of subby bottom end and a slappy upper midrange that makes it perfect for rock and punk mixes, and i've left in some overhead and room signal to give it a sense of space.
I've put it up on a pay what you want basis, so go check it out and let me know what you think! I hope you dig it as much as I do. The link is in my description!

Happy birthday @fleecexlightning! Love ya pal 🍻🍻🍻 (ps- veggie/vegan mates go to pinche pinche in chapel allerton, this place is dooooope)
I'm mixing the new @nordicgiants project this week and i'm having a total blast. The instrumentation and arrangements are totally insane - loads of synths, piano, drum overdubs, trumpets and even horns. With it being a huge sounding post rock aesthetic i'm getting the chance to be more creative with effects than I usually can be, here's what i'm doing with with the piano reverb.
The guys did already supply a couple of reverb tracks printed for the pianos in the tracks, but with it being the most prominent part of the song i'm currently working on, I wanted to accentuate it even more and make it a little "larger than life". I'm sending it to an reverb aux with my fave reverb Slate Verbsuite Classics set to the West Church patch from the Bricasti M7 model with the decay length dialled back to 2.68 seconds. This patch already sounded huge, but to make it a little bigger I increased the width on the plug in and added a little chorus to give it some cool movement.
I noticed the top end started to get in the way of the cymbals and the lower mids were getting a little muddy, so I stuck an EQ before it to filter out some top and bottom end and took out some resonances in the upper mids that got in the way of the original piano.
The piano now sounds like it was recorded in a huge church - sick. Someone come record some stuff in a church for real, that would be tight.

I'm doing a tonne of mixing/mastering over the next few weeks so expect a load of super nerdy posts my dudes.
I'm just putting the finishing touches to the mix of the @alphamaleteaparty live sessions I helped make with my mates in @technoirproductions a few weeks back, and one of the things i'm most stoked on is how well the bass is sitting in the mix - here's how i'm approaching the compression on it.
I'm using two stages of compression on the tone, one with a regular compressor and the other with a multi-band approach. The first being with the Slate Digital LLC FG-MU and the latter with Pro-MB. This is my first time using the MU on bass and i'm totally loving it, it's really gooey (I think this is the best word to describe it?) and adds loads of harmonics to the upper midrange which is perfect for making bass sit well and poke out against Tom's stereo guitar cabs. I'm getting a maximum of about 7db gain reduction and i've backed off the mix to 63%, which is effectively using it parallel to blend in the uncompressed signal.

In one of the songs we tracked Ben uses a bass in drop A tuning (sick) so Pro MB is just controlling the low end centred at 131Hz to make sure it isn't overbearing and still has a good relationship with the low end of the kick drum.

Engineer mates, what compressor do you like to use for bass in your mixes?

Hey! I'm back from holiday and I'm stoked for the next few weeks working on @alphamaleteaparty mixes and mixing/mastering an album for an incredible band that I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about yet 🌚
The 3rd and 4th weeks in August are still fairly open at the studio however, and I'd love to get them filled with some tracking, mixing, mastering or remote drum recording projects! If you'd like to have a chat with me about it, hit me up on here or head over to my website and fill out the contact form there - the link's in my description!
Cornwall is lovely and we don't want to go home today 💔
Greg from @alphamaleteaparty brought some incredible gear along for the @technoirproductions live session last weekend including a Pearl Masters kit and a load of great cymbals, but his handmade Hovland Drums snare was the star of the show for me. The 14x8 walnut shell gives it a tonne of body and warmth, and because it's so deep it is super loud, meaning with the right placement of the Sure SM7b I was using on it it minimised hi hat bleed really well.
I really want to try out more snares with unusual woods/materials, what do you like pals?

I've started mixing the songs I tracked with @alphamaleteaparty last weekend and I'm so stoked on the bass sound. As we were tracking live, I wanted to make sure there wasn't too much low end build up in the room effecting the other instruments so I decided to stick the brilliant Ampeg 8x10 bass cab at The Penthouse in an isolation booth with Ben's brilliant sounding Ashdown head and pedalboard in the live room with him.
I've started to love my @astonmics Origin on bass cabs, it captures a surprising amount of low end and the presence peak in the upper midrange really helps the tone poke out against other instruments in a mix.
I've got some space left this month and next for tracking, mixing, mastering and remote drum recording bookings. Let's have a chat about your project together!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to work with the incredible @alphamaleteaparty on some live sessions with @technoirproductions. The guys all brought some incredible gear with them (I'm gonna make some posts about all of it this week!), and they all made my job super easy by performing the three songs super well. I'm really stoked to start work on the mixes this week, and I can't wait for you to see the videos.
I've got some space this month and next for recording, mixing, mastering and live sessions. I'd love to have a chat about working together on your project. .

Throwback to the time I managed to sneak some shoegaze tone onto a mathcore record with @classicallyhandsomebrutes 😎

There's a section in one of the songs where the guitar plays a really pretty tapping riff that we used a super glassy tone for and the bass plays a cool spacious melody over the top, so we went a little mad with the tone spending a load of time making sure it was just perfect.
First in the chain is my fave bass fuzz, the EHX Russian Big Muff. This is just to make the tone a little woolier, so we had the sustain right down so it only effected the tone where Jack really dug into the strings to add a bit of excitement to the part. Next up is my other fave (this whole chain is just a chain of faves) Small Clone to add some cool movement to the part and make it a little trippy sounding, and the chain finishes up with the best reverb in the world - the Strymon Big Sky. I can't quite remember the specific setting we used, but I do remember we rolled the tone back a bit so it didn't poke out over the part too much and had a pretty long pre delay to create a cool kind of slap effect against the notes.
I bloody love tone. Come make tone with me in the studio! I've got space in July and August. .

Tonight i'm making some finishing touches to the mixes from the @triggerthumbuk live sessions I helped make with @technoirproductions !

I'm using both drum samples I released last week in this mix and i'm really pleased with what they're adding to the drum sound. I'm not replacing anything at all - Will is a super consistent drummer with really great cymbal/shell balance in his playing, i'm just using them to bring out a little more room and make the drums a little more exciting.
I'm sending both the kick and snare samples, as well as a little bit of overheads, to a parallel compression aux which is getting totally smashed by the Slate Monster to bring loads of room and make the transients hella snappy. I'm EQing this a little with the FG-S afterwards to get rid of some midrange the compression brought out and enhance the top and bottom, then i'm adding some distortion with the new New York module (this thing slaaaaays on drums) for even more excitement. The whole chain is then being shaped a little more with the CS Lift to make the bottom end a little more round and the top end a little more present which gives the drums even more punch and attack - sick.

This is probably the most i've paid attention to parallel compression on a drum mix before and I am well into it - sending samples instead of close mics means you can totally smash them without bringing up any bleed! Give it a try, I love it!

ICYMI, I released the samples i'm using in this mix of a Ludwig LM400 and 70s Ludwig kick last week, go check them out for yourself through the link in my bio and tell me what you think - i'm loving them in my own mixes.

Hey look I got to play with my fave ever amp again 😍
The Carlsbro 50 Top is just so bloody good. It has a really pleasing, pronounced midrange and because of the way the tubes saturate is interacts with distortion pedals so well. Whenever I track guitars at Crooked Rain it's always the first amp I try, and usually the one that ends up on the record.
Let's have fun with guitar tone together! I've got a couple of dates left this month and I'm taking bookings in July/August. .
