7 years ago today Sophie (then named Pixie) was born at a horrible Minnesota puppy mill (deemed one of the worst according the HSUS) and a few months later traveled to be auctioned off at an Amish dog auction here in Ohio. She ended up with a rescue group and who lied about her history & ad on Petfinder. When we brought her home we found out more about her origin and were angry at both the puppy mill owner AND the 'rescue'. Shady rescues do exist, many are disguised as puppy mill brokers and we found out the hard way. Her paperwork said she was yorkie and schnauzer and honestly we don't know for sure except she now has a better life with us. So Happy Birthday our little tiny girl who always likes to boss everyone around!

Four year ago our adopted Maisie was born. She was born at the hands of a greedy Amish puppy mill breeder who passed her off to rescue because she wasn't good enough to go to a pet store for top dollar due to her luxating patella. All 3 lbs of this pink skinned leggy girl found her way into our hearts and home. From then to now, how much she's changed. At 20 lbs she is considered big for an Italian greyhound and now spots adorn her and she can't quite 'fold up' like she used too. We love her just the same despite her 'lightly shedding' (those little white hairs are everywhere!!) and skiddish-freeze baby nature. I'd take her over any $1,500 designer dog that I had to pay for anyday. Rescue dogs may not be perfect, but they are the ones that need love the most. I can't say this enough, only support adoption through a legitimate rescue. I've learned some hard lessons being a pet parent almost 20 years. Buying an animal from a pet store or breeder (online, classifieds, etc) only funds cruelty and contributes to the pet overpopulation problem where shelter dogs are killed everyday because of people's greed. So happy birthday my sweet Maisie! We're are glad you rescued us!

On June 26th, 2015 a horrible abusive man from several states away in South Carolina brought in 3 of his dogs to euthanize after animal control cited him for neglect and demanded he vet his dogs to treat them for their health issues. Instead of getting them treated for conditions that could have been remedied, he asked the vet clinic to euthanize them. By the grace of God, someone at the clinic ask him to surrender the dogs to rescue instead. So this day, 2 years ago, Abby's life was spared. Although she finally got properly vetted, the two rescue groups who coordinated finding her a forever home ok'd her adoption to us before she was ready and got very sick in transport. It was a vulnerable time for me, after only 6 months after Zoie's death, to now worry about bringing a sick middle aged dog, a shih-tzu nonetheless, into our family. My heart was still fragile and I couldn't stand the thought of dealing with another heartbreak. But with patience and a lot of TLC, she began to thrive. Not a day goes by when I don't feel her gratitude for her loving and safe home with us. From death row to is Abby and what we claimed as new (re)Birthday! We aren't sure what the day or year she was born, but making this day...the day she was given a second chance...the day to celebrate. Happy (7th?) my little Abby. We are blessed to have you in our family๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽ‚

I never really acknowledged Zoie's gotcha day until I found her paperwork noting this day, until after she passed. Today 19 years ago is when I first laid eyes on this sweet little fluff ball who would become my loyal companion from my young single days to middle age. She was the only female in her litter and once she was put in my arms, I knew we were meant to be together. The love and joy from that day forward changed my life.
From carrying your little 7 week puppy self home this day 19 years ago, to the last time I held you at nearly 17 years old, I will always love you my angel. #happygotchaday #heartsforzoie

Thank you for those who have sent me messages about Bailey. He has been seizure free since we brought him home from his 2 night ER stay over 2 weeks ago. We are hoping the addition of CBD oil and herbal supplements will help manage his seizures better. For those who question what we feed or not feed him or his meds, etc. please understand that my husband and I are 100% dedicated to giving our dogs the very best of everything and spend thousands to ensure they have good quality medical care and happy lives. I assure you, I continue to be their best heath advocates as I do my own.
On a side note, Bailey developed some bleeding inside the back left side of his mouth. So either a tooth or his tongue have bled on and off for 24 hours. It's stopped now but to be safe, I am taking him in for a dental and thorough examination tomorrow to find out what is going on back there. He might have just bit his tongue but I don't want to risk infection from a cut/sore or an abscessed tooth not getting promptly treated. I am a little apprehensive about having him under anesthesia, so please keep him in your thoughts!

Bailey is back home with us and has passed the 24 mark with no seizures. $1,500 for 2 nights in the ER and then a trip to the holistic vet this afternoon. Since his neurologist can not offer any additional medication, we are trying CBD oil and a blend of gastrodia & uncaria herbal supplements in addition to everything else! Thanks to those you continue to follow Bailey's seizure journey and offer prayers and well wishes๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’

After nearly 4 mths of zero seizures, Bailey clustered over the last 24 hrs which ended him up overnight in the ER again. Another $1,300+ spent & no answers. And this time he developed Noncardiogenic Pulmonary Edema as a result of his cluster seizures. They put him on Lasix to try to reduce the fluid. The morning update from his neurologist was that his breathing is improving & he is alert, wagging his tail but he had a couple more seizures in their care overnight. So 8-10 within 24 hrs. They are keeping him longer. We know as soon as he has a seizure, it's never just one breakthrough seizure, but the start of a cluster that we have never been able to manage at home despite the 3 meds he has been on over the course of 2.5 years. He is maxed out on his dosage of Keppra, Phenobarbital & Zonisimide. We have been giving him a daily probiotic, digestive enzymes & omegas to help boost his overall immune, digestive & brain health. When he is not clustering, he is happy, alert & his playful foodie self. His liver enzymes were a little elevated last check but it could be the meds or something else. I suspect he might be in the early stages of Cushings (inappropriate panting, excessive thirst/hunger, darkening of skin, thinning of hair, etc), but they think even if we do a definitive test for Cushings, those symptoms are less of an issue than treating for the disease, which would cause more side effects than it's worth. And they think the seizures aren't related. So the roller coaster continues & the only other option now is to revisit trying CBD oil for him through the holistic vet we took Zoie. I'm reluctant because it didn't work for her. ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป6PM update: He had another seizure this afternoon so they are keeping him another night. If he is stable, we will see the holistic doc tomorrow afternoon, then follow up w/our regular vet. I visited him at the hospital around 4:30 today and gave him hugs and kisses. Thanks for the prayers๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Having human children wasn't in my cards. I think I was always meant to be a doggy mama since I was a little girl. Actually "Dog" was one of my very first words my mother said I spoke. When I was 8 years old we welcomed a miniature schnauzer into our family. Heidi was a special dog and after her passing I knew my life wouldn't be complete without another dog in my life. As a young single woman, my angel Zoie came into my life and my heart expanded beyond words. Bailey, Sophie, Maisie & Abby also fill my heart everyday. I am blessed to be their doggy mama. So happy Mother's Day to all the good mamas out there, both fur and humankind๐Ÿ’

5.2.98, the day your beautiful soul came into this world. I often wonder with each passing birthday, if you would have still been with us at 19. Even if you had, it wouldn't have been long enough. Today, although tears fill my eyes because I miss you, I celebrate your life, & try not to focus on your death. We shared so many wonderful memories. Your life was a gift. You taught me so much. I still remember how you used to smell and the way your fur felt in my hands. As well as the distinct sound of your bark and little coos, your endearing smile , the wag of your tail and how much your loved your favorite chair and beloved 'duckie'. The spot where you used to sleep in between papa & me is a sacred place that none of your siblings are allowed to be. I still want to think of your spirit resting in peace there between us. So, happy birthday my sweet angel, my Zoie. I will always love you. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’ #heartsforzoie
